| Exploitation Conditions | Three concrete prerequisites must all hold: (1) the FreeRDP client must be compiled with WITH_VERBOSE_WINPR_ASSERT=ON, which is NOT the default - the advisory confirms the OFF build does not crash; (2) the victim must initiate an RDP connection to an attacker-controlled or attacker-relayed server (UI:P); and (3) the session must negotiate the classic RemoteFX surface-bits path (e.g. /sec:rdp +rfx -gfx), not the GFX pipeline. Limiting factors: the non-default build flag excludes virtually all standard distribution packages; impact is limited to a client process abort with no confidentiality, integrity, memory-corruption, or code-execution consequence; and no server-side or default-config exposure exists. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.1 is driven entirely by availability (VA:H) of the FreeRDP client process; there is no confidentiality or integrity impact (VC:N/VI:N) and the advisory explicitly states no memory corruption. The single most important limiter, confirmed by the GHSA advisory's own validation, is that the crash occurs ONLY in client builds compiled with WITH_VERBOSE_WINPR_ASSERT=ON - a non-default developer/debug option. The matched build with WITH_VERBOSE_WINPR_ASSERT=OFF did not crash and ran until the test timeout, so standard distribution builds are not affected. No EPSS score and no KEV listing were provided; there is no indication of active exploitation. A complete, validated PoC exists in the public GHSA advisory (client exited status 134 at rfx_differential.h:34). The vuln.today priority is this_week, not act_now/emergency. Net: despite a 'High' numeric score this is a client-side denial of service gated on a non-default build flag plus victim-initiated connection to a malicious server, making it a low real-world priority for the overwhelming majority of deployments running standard builds - while legitimately relevant to anyone shipping verbose-assert-enabled builds. Note a data conflict on fix availability (see confidence_notes). |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker stands up (or compromises/relays into) a malicious RDP server and induces a victim to connect with a FreeRDP-based client that was built with verbose WinPR assertions enabled and negotiates the classic RemoteFX surface-bits path. The server sends a crafted RemoteFX tile whose two adjacent LL3 coefficients each decode to 20,000; the differential decoder sums them to 40,000, failing the signed-16-bit assertion and aborting the client. A full working PoC (a loopback relay injecting the tile) is published in the GHSA advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Denial of service in FreeRDP 3.17.0 through 3.32.1 can abort the client process when a malicious or relayed RDP server sends a crafted RemoteFX tile and the client is built with verbose WinPR assertions enabled. The abort occurs in the RemoteFX differential decoder and requires the victim to initiate the RDP connection and negotiate the classic RemoteFX surface-bits path; there is no confidentiality, integrity, or memory-corruption impact. A public proof-of-concept is included in the vendor advisory, and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV.
RemediationAI
Upgrade FreeRDP clients to 3.32.2 or later, the vendor-released fixed version identified in the GHSA advisory (https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-cg4f-57hc-v7w7). If immediate upgrade is not possible, rebuild the client with WITH_VERBOSE_WINPR_ASSERT=OFF; the matched no-assert build did not abort, at the trade-off of losing verbose WinPR assertion diagnostics. Because the issue requires the classic RemoteFX surface-bits path (the reproduction used /sec:rdp +rfx -gfx), avoid that negotiation with untrusted RDP servers where operationally feasible, recognizing that this reduces RemoteFX compatibility. The VulnCheck advisory is available at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/freerdp-3.17.0-before-3.32.2-denial-of-service-via-remotefx-decoder.

FreeRDP is an open-source implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol. RemoteFX is a remote-display codec whose differential decoder combines decoded coefficients and asserts that the result fits in a signed 16-bit value. This is a CWE-617 reachable-assertion issue: a crafted RLGR1 stream decodes adjacent LL3 coefficients to 20,000 each, and their sum of 40,000 trips the assertion at rfx_differential.h:rfx_differential_decode:34, aborting the client. The flaw is reachable only when the client is compiled with WITH_VERBOSE_WINPR_ASSERT=ON, which is not the default, and when the session negotiates the classic RemoteFX surface-bits path. The matched build with WITH_VERBOSE_WINPR_ASSERT=OFF did not abort, and the advisory states there is no memory corruption. CPE cpe:2.3:a:freerdp:freerdp:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies the affected product, with the fix released in 3.32.2.

FreeRDP from 3.17.0 before 3.32.2 contains an assertion failure in the RemoteFX differential decoder when verbose WinPR assertions are enabled. A malicious RDP server can send a crafted RemoteFX tile with adjacent LL3 coefficients summing beyond signed 16-bit range to abort the client process.
Executive ViewAI
FreeRDP versions 3.17.0 through 3.32.1 contain a high-severity denial-of-service flaw that can crash the client process when connecting to a malicious or relayed RDP server. This impacts users of FreeRDP-based remote desktop clients-particularly in environments where verbose debugging assertions are enabled-and could disrupt remote access operations. While no data loss or service compromise occurs, repeated crashes can hinder productivity and incident response capabilities.
Disable verbose WinPR assertions in production builds, restrict RDP connections to trusted servers, and consider using alternative RDP clients until a patch is available.
