Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the install window: videos/configuration.php must be absent, which is the default state of a fresh AVideo-Encoder deployment and also occurs if the file is later deleted or moved - an existing configuration.php makes the endpoint exit early and blocks the attack entirely. Beyond that, two trivially met gates apply: the supplied systemRootPath must resolve to a directory containing index.php (the application document root satisfies this), and a MySQL connection using databaseHost/databaseUser/databasePass must succeed - but the attacker points these at their own database server, so no target credentials or knowledge of the target database are needed. No authentication, no user interaction, and no token/authorization check exist on the endpoint (the only guard is the config-file existence check). The write path is derived from attacker-controlled systemRootPath with no base-directory constraint. Net limiting factor: realistic exposure is confined to instances currently in, or returned to, the uninitialized install state rather than fully configured running systems.

Impact

All severity signals point the same direction: the CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 10.0) describes remote, unauthenticated, no-interaction exploitation, and the vuln.today decision label is act_now. A complete, working proof-of-concept (curl commands plus the resulting injected line) is published in the vendor's GHSA advisory, so this is not theoretical. However, the single factor that moderates real-world exposure is a precondition the CVSS vector does not capture: the endpoint only functions while videos/configuration.php is absent (the fresh-install window, or after the file is removed/moved) - an existing file blocks it entirely, so the exposed population is systems that are mid-install, newly deployed, or that have had the config file deleted, not every running instance. No CISA KEV listing is present in the input and no EPSS probability was supplied, so widespread automated exploitation cannot be confirmed or ruled out from the data; given a niche product plus the install-window gate, targeted rather than mass exploitation is the more likely pattern. Treat as a genuine act_now priority for any instance currently in or re-entering the install state. Note one data hygiene issue: the Description opens by calling this 'AVideo, a video-sharing Platform,' but the CPE (wwbn:avideo-encoder), EUVD affected list (AVideo-Encoder < 8.1.0), and the GHSA advisory all scope the flaw to the AVideo-Encoder component - verify you are assessing the encoder, not the main AVideo platform.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

While a target AVideo-Encoder is in its install window (configuration.php not yet present), an unauthenticated attacker sends a single POST to install/checkConfiguration.php with databaseHost pointing at a MySQL server they control and a webSiteRootURL value that closes the single-quoted PHP literal and appends system($_GET['c']). The installer writes this attacker PHP into a directly requestable videos/configuration.php, and a follow-up GET to that file with a command in 'c' runs OS commands as the web-server user. A full working PoC for exactly this flow is published in the GHSA advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Unauthenticated PHP code injection in AVideo-Encoder before 8.1.0 allows a remote attacker to write arbitrary PHP into videos/configuration.php through install/checkConfiguration.php and execute it as the web-server user. The attack works only while videos/configuration.php is absent-the default on a fresh deployment or after the file is deleted or moved-and requires the attacker to supply a reachable database host, which they control, plus a systemRootPath containing index.php. Version 8.1.0 fixes the flaw; a public PoC reference exists and is not verified as working exploit code, and the decision label is act_now with CVSS 10.0.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade AVideo-Encoder to 8.1.0 (release tag v8.1.0), which resolves systemRootPath with realpath, constrains writes to the encoder installation, uses var_export for generated PHP literals, and converts the INSERT statements to prepared statements. Until upgrading, keep videos/configuration.php present so the endpoint exits early, and remove or deny web access to install/checkConfiguration.php; note that deleting or moving configuration.php reopens the install window, and blocking the installer path is a compensating control rather than a complete fix. Advisory: https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo-Encoder/security/advisories/GHSA-xrj3-cqm8-r992 and fix commit https://github.com/WWBN/AVideo-Encoder/commit/0faaddebd11c087885d25a7e0513745465cad411.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is CWE-94 code injection in a PHP installer endpoint. install/checkConfiguration.php has no session, token, or authorization check; its only guard exits when videos/configuration.php already exists. When the file is absent, request values including webSiteRootURL are interpolated into single-quoted PHP string literals without escaping, so a quote terminates the literal and the remainder is parsed as PHP. The generated configuration file is written under the document root and is directly requestable, so injected code runs before the application bootstrap. The write path is also derived from attacker-controlled systemRootPath without a base-directory constraint (CWE-73), and the endpoint has no authorization beyond the re-run existence check (CWE-862). The same endpoint interpolates request values into streamer and configuration INSERT statements, creating a secondary SQL-injection sink (CWE-89). The fixed commit resolves systemRootPath with realpath, constrains writes to the encoder installation, uses var_export for generated PHP literals, and converts the INSERT statements to prepared statements. The CPE is cpe:2.3:a:wwbn:avideo-encoder:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, matching the AVideo-Encoder product.

DescriptionCVE.org

AVideo is a video-sharing Platform. Prior to 8.1.0, the unauthenticated installer endpoint install/checkConfiguration.php assembles videos/configuration.php by interpolating request parameters, including webSiteRootURL, into single-quoted PHP string literals without escaping. An attacker can terminate a literal and inject PHP that executes as the web-server user when the generated, directly requestable file is loaded. Exploitation requires videos/configuration.php to be absent, as on every fresh deployment or after the file is removed or moved; an existing file blocks this endpoint. The supplied systemRootPath must contain index.php and a connection using databaseHost, databaseUser, and databasePass must succeed, but the attacker can point those parameters to their own database server and needs no target credentials. The write location is also derived from systemRootPath without a base-directory constraint. This permits arbitrary command execution, reading and overwriting files owned by the web-server user, persistent PHP code, and control over stored database connection settings. The endpoint additionally interpolates request values into streamer and configuration INSERT statements, creating a secondary SQL-injection sink. This issue is fixed in version 8.1.0.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-61564 is a critical unauthenticated code injection vulnerability in AVideo-Encoder (versions before 8.1.0) that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on the server. Fresh deployments or environments where the configuration file has been removed are at immediate risk. Leadership should prioritize remediation because a successful exploit could lead to full system compromise, data breach, and service disruption.
