MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Discovery, Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Three specific preconditions must all hold: (1) the Asterisk HTTP web server must be explicitly enabled - it is disabled by default; (2) the attacker must be able to reach that HTTP server - by default it binds only to 127.0.0.1, so remote reachability requires a non-default bind address or a proxy/forward; and (3) the attacker must already possess valid read-only ARI (Asterisk REST Interface) credentials and use the REST-over-WebSocket feature. The flaw is that the WebSocket request path did not re-apply the read-only authorization constraints, letting a read-only principal perform write operations including arbitrary module path loading. Limiting factors: default-off HTTP, localhost-only default binding, mandatory valid credentials, and the 'under certain conditions' qualifier captured as high attack complexity - together these substantially narrow realistic exploitation to deployments that expose ARI over HTTP to accounts the operator considers low-privilege. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditionally-gated risk rather than an internet-wide emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 7.5 High) tells a consistent story: network reachable, but high attack complexity (AC:H) and low-but-nonzero privileges (PR:L) are required, culminating in full confidentiality/integrity/availability loss via arbitrary module path loading and conditional RCE. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', which aligns with a serious-but-not-drop-everything posture. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit reference were supplied - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; the GitHub links are vendor patch commits and the GHSA advisory, not proof-of-concept code. The signals are largely concordant: a high-impact authorization bypass whose real-world reach is throttled by three stacked preconditions (HTTP enabled, reachable, and valid read-only ARI credentials). The main caveat is the PR:L rating - it assumes the attacker already holds valid read-only ARI credentials, so this is primarily an privilege-escalation/authorization-bypass risk for environments that hand out scoped ARI accounts, not an anonymous remote RCE. Given HTTP is off by default and bound to 127.0.0.1, blanket internet exposure is unlikely unless an operator has deliberately widened the bind address and provisioned low-privilege ARI users. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding valid read-only ARI credentials (for example a monitoring or integration account) connects to a reachable, HTTP-enabled Asterisk instance and opens a REST-over-WebSocket session. Because the WebSocket request path failed to re-apply the read-only authorization checks, the attacker issues write operations they should not be permitted, including loading an arbitrary module path to achieve conditional remote code execution. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data; the high attack complexity (AC:H) reflects the 'under certain conditions' qualifier in the advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Read-only ARI users on Asterisk can perform write operations through the REST-over-WebSocket feature, which allows arbitrary module path loading and, conditionally, remote code execution. Affected are Asterisk branches up to 20.20.0, 21.12.2, 22.10.0 and 23.4.0, plus Certified Asterisk up to 22.8-cert2; fixed releases are 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and 22.8-cert3. Exploitation is gated on three conditions holding simultaneously - the Asterisk HTTP web server explicitly enabled (it is disabled by default), the attacker able to reach that server (it binds only to 127.0.0.1 by default), and the attacker already holding valid read-only ARI credentials - which is why the assessed vector carries AC:H; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch is available.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Asterisk 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1 or 23.4.1, or to Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3, all published in the GitHub releases linked above; the fixes are the commits 051d29a0d35559e9165bab346de9422e25415533, 205c301a0a0b0d013d4ebdf12856ebbc30405350, 762b4c9c39b28fa5564112b0f484012298469a6c, 87641e9b2cd62c998c5283400ba77b61b5b07dd4, 9d198a7d16ccba51507dfea6c1ecc511e89d698a and c10cdbce072a708060cd38a89d6850808fe6bf46. The advisory's own preconditions define the exposure-limiting controls available before patching: leave the Asterisk HTTP web server disabled (its default), keep the HTTP bind address at the 127.0.0.1 default rather than widening it or fronting it with a proxy, and avoid granting read-only ARI credentials to accounts or applications that should never be able to reach the HTTP server - each of these removes the corresponding precondition the attack depends on, at the cost of not offering ARI over HTTP/WebSocket to those consumers. Because the bypass lets a read-only principal reach write and module-load operations, the vendor's fixed releases are the complete remedy; per the advisory, deployments that must expose ARI over HTTP to lower-privilege accounts should treat upgrading as required rather than relying on the configuration limits alone.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Asterisk REST Interface (ARI) is implemented by res_ari and the WebSocket subsystem in res/ari/ari_websockets.c and res/ari/ari_websocket_requests.c. ARI supports two transports: ordinary HTTP requests, where authentication and authorization are applied per request against the configured ARI users, and REST-over-WebSocket, where an HTTP GET upgrades to a WebSocket and subsequent REST requests are carried inside WebSocket frames. The upstream fix shows that the HTTP GET query parameters used to create the WebSocket - including the ?api_key=userid:password parameter - were not propagated into the per-request context built by parse_rest_request_msg, so requests arriving over the WebSocket were parsed and dispatched without re-applying the credential and authorization constraints in the same way as the plain HTTP path. res_ari.c was reworked to parse api_key from the query parameters into an ast_http_auth structure (parse_api_keys/create_http_auth) and to resolve the invoking source, so that WebSocket-originated REST requests are authenticated and authorized identically to HTTP ones. The advisory assigns both CWE-863 (incorrect authorization) and CWE-22 (path traversal): the practical consequence of the bypass is that a read-only principal reaches write/load endpoints, among them arbitrary module path loading, which the advisory states permits conditional remote code execution. The HTTP server that fronts ARI is disabled by default and, even when enabled, is bound only to 127.0.0.1 by default, so the attack surface is opt-in and normally loopback-only. CPE data covers the Asterisk product line and the Certified Asterisk product line; EUVD enumerates the affected ranges as 20.x before 20.20.1, 21.0.0-pre1 before 21.12.3, 22.0.0-pre1 before 22.10.1, 23.0.0-pre1 before 23.4.1 and certified-asterisk 22.8-cert1-pre1 before 22.8-cert3.

Lifecycle Timeline
2DescriptionCVE.org
Asterisk is an open source private branch exchange and telephony toolkit. Prior to Asterisk 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3, an authenticated attacker with read-only permissions for the Asterisk REST Interface (ARI) may, under certain conditions, execute write operations through REST-over-WebSocket. The authorization bypass permits arbitrary module path loading and conditional remote code execution. The Asterisk HTTP web server must be enabled and reachable, and the attacker must already have valid read-only ARI credentials. HTTP is disabled by default and binds only to 127.0.0.1 by default even when enabled. This issue is fixed in Asterisk 20.20.1, 21.12.3, 22.10.1, 23.4.1 and Certified Asterisk 22.8-cert3.
Technical POC Analysis
The advisory tags two weaknesses: CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) as the primary defect and CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory) as the consequence.
Full technical POC analysis - root cause, step-by-step exploitation and patch breakdown - is part of the Pro and Business plans.
Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-57200 is a high-severity flaw in Asterisk's REST-over-WebSocket feature that lets read-only ARI users perform unauthorized write operations, potentially leading to remote code execution. Organizations running affected Asterisk versions with the HTTP server enabled and reachable must prioritize patching, as exploitation could compromise telephony infrastructure and expose sensitive communications.
