Exploitation Conditions

Finding 1 (credential exposure) requires that DATABASE_URL or CLICKHOUSE_URL be configured with user-info credentials or credential-like query parameters (password, sslpassword, user), that the code-migration command be run, and that the attacker can read the resulting standard-output 'Environment' log block. Finding 2 (reset-token exposure) requires the non-default condition that BOTH SMTP_HOST and RESEND_API_KEY are unset, an email flow (such as password reset) to be triggered, and attacker access to standard output logs. The overarching limiting factor for both is that the attacker must already have access to application, container, CI, or centralized log stores - there is no direct network-service trigger; exposure scales with how long and how widely those logs are retained.

Impact

This is a credible but moderate-priority issue rather than an emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (7.1) scores AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:P with VC:H, implying remote, unauthenticated confidentiality loss - but that characterization conflicts with the actual mechanism (CWE-532, sensitive data written to stdout/application logs). Real exploitation requires access to application, container, CI, or centralized-log stores, which is itself a form of privilege; PR:N therefore overstates openness and the UI:P marking (reflecting that an email/migration flow must be triggered) does not change the core dependency on log access - this discrepancy should be verified against the vendor advisory. Supporting signals point to measured urgency: EPSS is low at 0.28% (20th percentile), there is no CISA KEV listing, and no weaponized exploit is published, so widespread opportunistic exploitation is unlikely. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a patched, high-severity disclosure flaw that warrants prompt remediation but not drop-everything response. The dominant risk is post-compromise or insider amplification: anyone who can already read logs can harvest full database connection credentials and live password-reset tokens, turning limited log visibility into database access or account takeover.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker or insider with read access to OpenPanel's application, container, CI, or centralized logs inspects the migration startup 'Environment' banner and recovers the complete DATABASE_URL/CLICKHOUSE_URL including embedded credentials. In deployments where both SMTP_HOST and RESEND_API_KEY are unset, the same actor reads fallback email log output to capture password-reset URLs containing valid tokens, enabling account takeover. No weaponized exploit is required - the vendor advisory publishes exact reproduction steps.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

OpenPanel before 3.0.0 leaks secrets into standard-output logs through two separate code paths, allowing anyone who can read application, container, CI or centralized logs to recover sensitive data. Database migration startup banners print the full DATABASE_URL and CLICKHOUSE_URL including user-info credentials and credential-like query parameters, and the email fallback path used when both SMTP_HOST and RESEND_API_KEY are unset serializes the recipient address, subject and full template data - which for the password-reset flow includes the reset-token URL. Exploitation is not remote against the service itself: it requires pre-existing read access to log stores plus, in the migration case, that the code-migration command was run, or, in the email case, the non-default double-unset provider configuration and a triggered email flow; no public exploit code is identified at time of analysis and EPSS is low (0.28%, 20th percentile), consistent with a moderate-priority information exposure rather than an emergency.

RemediationAI

Upgrade OpenPanel to 3.0.0 or later, which is the version the vendor advisory marks as fixed; the two fix commits are 337b4ff8fe268c769a075a2e53206d54045cb2d5 (adds the redactConnectionUrls helper and wires it into the migration startup banner) and b197f024388060e37ef3b3dad43451a3d0a5d501 (the email-side change), per the security advisory at https://github.com/Openpanel-dev/openpanel/security/advisories/GHSA-xr2x-w49w-hp2c. If immediate upgrade is not possible, treat existing logs as compromised: purge or tightly restrict access to container stdout, CI job logs and any centralized log collectors that captured migration 'Environment' output or email fallback dumps, and rotate any PostgreSQL/ClickHouse credentials that appeared in DATABASE_URL or CLICKHOUSE_URL plus invalidate outstanding password-reset tokens issued while SMTP_HOST and RESEND_API_KEY were both unset - noting that rotation and token invalidation are the only true containment for data already written, since the logging behavior itself persists until patched. Configuring SMTP_HOST or RESEND_API_KEY removes the second code path's trigger, and running migrations in ephemeral jobs whose stdout is not centrally retained reduces the first path's blast radius; both are compensating measures only and do not fix the underlying logging code.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Both findings are CWE-532 (insertion of sensitive information into log files) in the OpenPanel TypeScript codebase. Finding 1 lives in the code-migration entry point (packages/db, code-migrations/migrate.ts), which emits an 'Environment' startup block interpolating env.databaseUrl and env.clickhouseUrl verbatim; because connection URLs such as postgresql://user:pass@host:5432/db or ClickHouse URLs carrying ?user=admin&password=... embed credentials in the URL itself (user-info component and credential-like query parameters including password, sslpassword and user), the log line becomes a credential disclosure. ClickHouse accepts comma-separated URL lists, so multiple DSNs can leak in one line. Finding 2 lives in packages/email/src/index.tsx: when neither SMTP_HOST nor RESEND_API_KEY is configured, the fallback path dumps the recipient, subject and serialized template payload instead of failing quietly, and the reset-password flow passes a token-bearing URL as template data, turning a misconfiguration warning into a password-reset token disclosure. The vendor fix introduces a redactConnectionUrls helper that parses each comma-separated URL, replaces the username with ***, masks password/sslpassword/user query parameters, and preserves only scheme, host, port, path and non-secret query values, returning '(not set)' or '(unparseable url)' otherwise; the email side reduces the dump to a structured warning. Note that the supplied CVSS 4.0 vector scores network-adjacent impact (7.1) while the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, reflecting that the real precondition is local/log-store read access rather than a directly reachable network service. The trigger for the logging itself is described in the upstream advisory; there is no evidence of memory-safety or code-execution impact - confidentiality only.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenPanel before 3.0.0 contains an information exposure vulnerability that writes database connection URLs and email template data to standard output logs. Users with log access can obtain database credentials from migration startup logs and password-reset tokens logged when SMTP_HOST and RESEND_API_KEY are unset.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

OpenPanel versions before 3.0.0 expose sensitive credentials and password-reset tokens in application logs, potentially compromising database access and user account integrity. This affects organizations using OpenPanel, as anyone with log access (e.g., developers, third-party monitoring) could recover secrets. Leadership should prioritize patching to prevent credential leakage and meet compliance obligations.
