Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated account on a multi-tenant OpenPanel instance backed by a shared ClickHouse cluster - but this is a low bar because the advisory confirms registration and project creation are trivially self-service. The attacker must reach the profile.values tRPC endpoint and supply a property value that does NOT start with 'properties.' (the else branch interpolates the raw string directly into the SELECT expression position, where sqlstring.escape cannot protect it and no column allowlist is applied pre-patch). Limiting factors: exploitation is confined to deployments before 3.0.0 running shared multi-tenant ClickHouse storage, and requires authentication (though trivial to obtain); it does not work against the escaped 'properties.' key branch.

Impact

Signals are moderate and partly conflicting. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector scores 8.6 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N, VC:H/VI:H/VA:H), but two things temper it. First, PR:H overstates the barrier: the advisory states any user can trivially self-service register and create a project to obtain the required access, so real privilege cost is low (closer to PR:L). Second, VI:H/VA:H appears inflated - the described mechanism is a read-only ClickHouse SELECT injection enabling cross-tenant data disclosure, with no stated write or destruction capability, so integrity/availability impact is questionable and the true impact is confidentiality-dominated. Counterbalancing the high CVSS: EPSS is only 0.39% (32nd percentile, low), and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, indicating no confirmed mass or active exploitation. However, a complete step-by-step reproduction is published in the vendor's GHSA advisory, so exploitation is trivial for any authenticated user of a shared multi-tenant deployment. Net: this is a genuine, easy-to-exploit tenant-isolation breach in affected deployments (vuln.today priority 'this_week'), but not an emergency - the low EPSS and absence from KEV suggest it is not yet seeing widespread opportunistic exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker self-registers on a shared OpenPanel instance, creates their own project to gain read access, then calls the profile.values endpoint with a crafted property parameter such as "email as values FROM profiles WHERE project_id = 'victimproj' -- " that injects its own FROM/WHERE and comments out the trailing project_id scope. The victim tenant's emails (or events/sessions, including PII, IPs, and revenue) are returned directly in the response values field (non-blind). A full working proof-of-concept with exact HTTP requests is published in the vendor's GHSA advisory.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Cross-tenant data exposure in OpenPanel before 3.0.0 lets any authenticated user read other projects' profiles, events and sessions out of a shared ClickHouse cluster by injecting a SELECT expression into the 'property' parameter of the profile.values tRPC endpoint. The injected expression carries its own FROM/WHERE clause and comments out the trailing project_id scope, and results are returned directly in the response 'values' field, so exfiltration is non-blind (emails, IPs, session and revenue data from any tenant). Registration and project creation are self-service, so the authentication prerequisite is trivial; a reproducible proof-of-concept with full request steps is published in the vendor's GitHub advisory, but there is no KEV listing and no confirmed active exploitation, and EPSS is low at 0.39% (32nd percentile) with a vuln.today decision of this_week. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.6, while our assessment treats it as a scope-changed confidentiality-only issue.

RemediationAI

Upgrade OpenPanel to 3.0.0 or later, which is the version in which the vulnerability is fixed; the patch commit is https://github.com/Openpanel-dev/openpanel/commit/a2aa053cb23e92967e812d3be5fb0f1d606d9fdc and the vendor advisory is https://github.com/Openpanel-dev/openpanel/security/advisories/GHSA-4j6c-j6vc-xq96, with additional detail at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/openpanel-before-3.0.0-clickhouse-sql-injection-via-profile-values. The fix works by allowlisting profile table columns before they are placed into SQL identifier/expression positions, so any deployment still on a pre-3.0.0 build retains the raw interpolation path. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls are: restrict the profile.values tRPC route (for example at a reverse proxy or by removing the endpoint for untrusted users) to trusted operators, accepting that this breaks the profile-values UI feature; disable self-service sign-up and onboarding.project creation so arbitrary internet users cannot obtain the low-privileged account the attack requires, at the cost of manual user provisioning; and run separate ClickHouse databases or credentials per tenant so a single injected query cannot span projects, with the trade-off of higher operational overhead. Rotating ClickHouse credentials and reviewing analytics access logs for crafted 'property' values (commented-out SQL, UNION-style or FROM-bearing expressions) is warranted for instances that were exposed before upgrading.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenPanel is an open-source web/product analytics platform that stores events, sessions and profile records in ClickHouse and exposes them through a tRPC API. The vulnerable path is the profile.values query, where a user-supplied 'property' value is used as a SQL expression: the internal clix/sql-builder layer escapes values with sqlstring.escape, but identifier and expression positions are interpolated raw, and sqlstring.escape cannot protect those positions. Only the branch where the property name starts with 'properties.' is neutralised (rendered as a Map-access string literal); the else branch drops the raw string straight into the SELECT list with no column allowlist such as the existing isKnownEventField / column whitelist checks (CWE-89, improper neutralisation of special elements in SQL). Because the property value becomes a full SELECT expression, an attacker can append an arbitrary FROM/WHERE, comment out the trailing "as values FROM profiles WHERE (project_id='...')" scope, and return another tenant's rows in the same response. The upstream fix (commit a2aa053cb23e92967e812d3be5fb0f1d606d9fdc) introduces an exported PROFILE_TABLE_COLUMNS allowlist plus isProfileColumn() and profileJoinColumns() helpers, and replaces the previous pattern of splitting filter names on '.' and splicing the fragments into profile JOIN subqueries in event.service.ts and funnel.service.ts, so only allowlisted profile columns (always including id) can reach the SQL text. Note that the vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector marks PR:H, whereas the assessed vector (CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N) treats the attacker as a low-privileged authenticated user, which matches the advisory's self-service registration path.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenPanel before 3.0.0 contains an sql injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users to read cross-tenant data by supplying a crafted property parameter to profile.values. Attackers can inject a SELECT expression with their own FROM/WHERE clauses and comment out the project_id scope to exfiltrate other projects' profiles, events, and sessions.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

OpenPanel versions before 3.0.0 contain a cross-tenant data exposure vulnerability that allows any registered user to read other customers' sensitive data-including profiles, events, sessions, and revenue information-from the shared analytics cluster. Because registration is self-service and the proof-of-concept is publicly available but not actively exploited, the primary business risk is unauthorized access to confidential customer data and potential regulatory or reputational harm. Leadership should prioritize remediation to protect tenant trust and avoid data breach obligations.
