| Exploitation Conditions | Requires 'rclone serve s3' running in its documented default anonymous mode - i.e. started without --auth-key or --auth-proxy - with multipart streaming enabled (the affected streaming implementation first shipped in v1.75.0) and the listener network-reachable by the attacker. Under that configuration no credential is needed (matching PR:N); if --auth-key or --auth-proxy is set, the attacker must first present an accepted S3 credential, so authentication reachability limits exposure. The attacker must send real body bytes for the admitted out-of-order parts (not header-only amplification). Per the advisory, binding the service to a trusted interface reduces reachability but does not correct the arithmetic, and disabling streaming takes a different, intentionally memory-buffered path and is not a safe mitigation for memory exhaustion; upgrading to v1.75.2 is the fix. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk, not a top-tier emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated, deterministic attack against the default anonymous configuration of 'rclone serve s3', with impact limited to availability (VA:L, no confidentiality or integrity). The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a resource-exhaustion denial of service rather than code execution or data compromise. Exploitation is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; however, a complete working PoC reproducer (poc/poc.py) is published in the vendor GHSA advisory, so a functioning demonstration of the memory-limit bypass is public. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation-probability cannot be compared against KEV/PoC signals here. One signal tension worth flagging: the vendor scores availability as VA:L (the bounded reproducer measured only ~49 MiB RSS growth), but the advisory itself states that repeating admitted parts or uploads 'can exhaust the rclone process or its host and interrupt all S3 operations served by that process' - a realistic sustained attack points toward full service outage, which I assess as higher availability impact than VA:L. Overall: a real priority to patch for anyone exposing serve s3 anonymously to untrusted networks, but moderate rather than critical given availability-only impact and no confirmed in-the-wild use. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach an anonymously-exposed 'rclone serve s3' listener creates a multipart upload, then opens two concurrent PUT requests for the current part (partNumber=1), each declaring 5,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes while withholding the bodies; summing the two declared lengths wraps the signed int64 reorder-accounting field to a large negative value. With the memory cap now defeated, the attacker streams real out-of-order parts that should have been rejected, and by repeating this exhausts the process or host memory, taking the S3 service offline. A complete working PoC demonstrating the 1 MiB-limit bypass is published in the vendor advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 25, 2026
Unauthenticated memory exhaustion in 'rclone serve s3' (streaming multipart implementation shipped in 1.75.0 through 1.75.1) lets a network client defeat the configured multipart reorder-memory cap by holding two concurrent current-part PUT requests that each declare a 5e18-byte body, wrapping the signed int64 accounting counter negative so later out-of-order parts bypass the buffer check and are retained in RAM. Only availability is affected - the reporter demonstrated a bounded 1 MiB-limit run admitting six 8 MiB out-of-order parts and roughly 50 MiB of RSS growth, with no confidentiality or integrity impact shown. Exploitation requires the documented anonymous deployment (no --auth-key or --auth-proxy) with a reachable listener, and the attacker must actually transmit the body bytes; a public PoC reproducer accompanies the advisory, and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) or EPSS signal is present in the supplied data, so this is a genuine but bounded availability risk rather than a top-tier emergency.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to rclone 1.75.2, the vendor-released fixed version listed for the go/github.com/rclone/rclone module and confirmed in advisory GHSA-qjw8-8hmp-c3m6 (https://github.com/rclone/rclone/security/advisories/GHSA-qjw8-8hmp-c3m6). Until the upgrade is in place, restrict who can reach the serve s3 listener: enabling --auth-key or --auth-proxy forces an accepted S3 credential before the multipart accounting path is reachable under the assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H vector, and binding the listener to a trusted interface reduces reachability - but the advisory is explicit that both measures only limit exposure and do not correct the arithmetic behind the overflow. Disabling multipart streaming is not a safe mitigation, because it routes uploads through a different, intentionally memory-buffered path that is itself susceptible to memory exhaustion. Restart serve s3 processes after upgrading, and monitor for large RSS growth or unusually large declared Content-Length values on multipart part uploads as a detection aid while remediation is pending.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-190 signed integer overflow in the per-upload reorder-accounting field (up.buffered) of the multipart streaming path in cmd/serve/s3/multipart.go; the advisory also classifies the resulting condition as CWE-770 (allocation of resources without limits). In the affected releases, s3Backend.UploadPart passes the client-supplied Content-Length to waitForTurn before any body is read, and waitForTurn always admits a request whose part number is at or before the part currently needed, then performs an unchecked 'up.buffered += size'. Two concurrent PUTs for partNumber=1 declaring 5,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes each sum to a nominal 1e19, which wraps int64 to a large negative value, after which the capacity comparison (bufferLimit - buffered) evaluates as a huge positive and admits out-of-order parts far above the --multipart-streaming-buffer-limit (default 256 MiB). This is explicitly distinct from GHSA-2p48-j3qc-rx9f / issue #9616, which concerned allocation proportional to an unverified declared length before body arrival and was fixed in 1.75.1; this bug uses the post-fix lazy allocator (multipart.NewRW grows only as io.Copy reads the body), so the attacker must send real bytes that consume memory - this is not header-only amplification. Affected code is tracked as the Go module go/github.com/rclone/rclone, vulnerable from 1.75.0 and fixed in 1.75.2; the advisory reports the overflow was verified in v1.75.0, v1.75.1, and an assessed source revision identifying itself as v1.76.0.

1DescriptionCVE.org
rclone serve s3 versions 1.75.0 before 1.75.2 contain an integer overflow vulnerability in multipart reorder-memory accounting that bypasses the configured buffer limit. Attackers can open two concurrent current-part PUT requests declaring huge lengths to wrap the signed int64 counter and retain out-of-order parts in memory, exhausting the host.
