V12 - Secure Communication Transport encryption

| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that an operator has enabled network serving and then set networkServeTLS=true via POST /api/system/setNetworkServeTLS expecting encrypted transport - the kernel persists but never enforces this, so the port keeps serving full-API plain HTTP. The attacker must additionally occupy a network-adjacent position (same LAN/segment) to sniff the cleartext login flow and session cookie. Exploitation is aided by two compounding defects on the same transport path: the session cookie from session.go line 140 is issued without the Secure attribute (only HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax), and HTTPS responses carry no Strict-Transport-Security header, allowing cookie leakage over any cleartext request and browser downgrade. Limiting factors: no remote/internet vector (adjacency only), high attack complexity, and dependence on the operator having turned on the toggle; attackers with no sniffing position cannot exploit it. |
| Impact | The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, base 7.6) describes a network-adjacent, no-privilege, no-interaction flaw whose exploitation carries a defined attack requirement (AT:P) and high complexity (AC:H) - these map directly to the two stated preconditions: the attacker must hold a network-adjacent sniffing position and the operator must have enabled the networkServeTLS toggle. The GHSA advisory reports the cleartext behavior was verified live on v3.8.6 and publishes concrete PoC steps, so the mechanism is confirmed rather than inferred; however, no EPSS score and no KEV status were provided in the input, so widespread-exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the data. There is no public exploit identified as weaponized code - a public PoC reference exists in the advisory but is not verified as working exploit code. The vuln.today decision label is this_week and the reporting vendor itself suggested a Medium rating (not High) precisely because exploitation requires adjacency plus an operator who enabled the setting; this is therefore a credible but conditioned priority rather than a drop-everything internet-wide threat, and the adjacency plus operator-toggle gate meaningfully limits real-world blast radius despite the High-band score. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator enables networkServeTLS believing kernel traffic is now encrypted, but the kernel port continues answering full-API plain HTTP alongside HTTPS on the same port. An attacker on the same LAN or adjacent network segment passively sniffs the cleartext login flow, captures the submitted access auth code and the 30-day session cookie (which lacks the Secure attribute while responses omit HSTS), and replays the cookie to take over the victim's kernel API session. Published PoC steps in the GHSA advisory demonstrate the cleartext response and the missing Secure/HSTS controls on v3.8.6. |

SiYuan 3.6.0 through 3.8.6 accepts and persists the networkServeTLS administrator setting but never enforces it, so the kernel port continues answering plain HTTP with full API access in cleartext while also serving HTTPS on the same port. An operator who enables the toggle believes kernel traffic is encrypted, yet a network-adjacent attacker can sniff the login flow - including the access auth code - and the session cookie, which is issued without the Secure attribute while HTTPS responses omit HSTS, allowing session hijack against the kernel API. Exploitation requires a network-adjacent sniffing position and the operator having enabled the setting, which is why the flaw is rated for adjacency and high complexity rather than internet-wide exposure; a public PoC reference exists describing the verification steps, and it is not confirmed as working exploit code. A vendor fix is available in v3.8.7.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: v3.8.7 (fixed version for the >= 3.6.0, <= 3.8.6 range); upgrading is the complete fix, since the defect is in the listener wiring itself, and the vendor advisory https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/security/advisories/GHSA-hpj5-f7cj-vvwr documents the change. Until upgrading, the exposure only exists on instances where network serving is enabled and networkServeTLS has been set true, so the most direct compensation is to keep network serving disabled where remote access is unnecessary, or to accept that the kernel port remains plain HTTP alongside HTTPS despite the toggle and therefore restrict that port to trusted segments using host firewalls or segment ACLs so only intended clients can reach it - noting this does not remove cleartext on-path visibility for those who remain on the same segment. Because the session cookie lacks the Secure attribute and HTTPS responses omit Strict-Transport-Security, browsers on the same host can still leak the 30-day session cookie over any cleartext request, so operators who keep network serving enabled should treat kernel sessions as exposed on shared network segments and keep the access auth code and session lifetime under review. The related transport advisories GHSA-4wwp-f6gw-6qm5, GHSA-7j37-4gq6-wm7m and GHSA-hhm2-g993-p656 were fixed in v3.8.6, so running v3.8.7 also consolidates those fixes.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a cleartext transmission issue (CWE-319) rooted in how SiYuan's Go kernel wires its listener. In 3.8.x, kernel/server/serve.go computes useTLS from the NetworkServeTLS and NetworkServe configuration values but uses the result only to select a log message; the value never reaches the listener. TLS certificates are generated unconditionally via util.GetOrCreateTLSCert(), and whenever a certificate exists the port is served through util.ServeMultiplexed. The multiplexer in kernel/util/cmux.go routes cmux.Any() to a plain HTTP server and cmux.TLS() to the HTTPS server on the same port, so both transports are always available. In 3.6.0 and 3.7.0 the same setting gated only certificate generation, and the fixed-port proxy (kernel/server/proxy/fixedport.go) likewise served dual HTTP and HTTPS, meaning the setting has never been transport-enforcing in any release since it first appeared in 3.6.0. Two related weaknesses compound the exposure on the same path: the session cookie set in kernel/model/session.go line 140 carries HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax but no Secure attribute even for HTTPS-served logins, so browsers will send it over cleartext requests to the same host, and HTTPS responses carry no Strict-Transport-Security header, permitting browser downgrade. This is distinct from earlier SiYuan transport advisories GHSA-4wwp-f6gw-6qm5, GHSA-7j37-4gq6-wm7m and GHSA-hhm2-g993-p656, which described different mechanisms and were fixed in v3.8.6; none concerned networkServeTLS being a non-enforced setting. The Go module is tracked as vulnerable from >= 3.6.0 through <= 3.8.6 and fixed in v3.8.7, matching the CPE cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan entry.

SiYuan 3.6.0 before 3.8.7 accepts and persists the networkServeTLS setting but never enforces it, so the kernel port keeps serving full API access over plain HTTP alongside HTTPS. Network-adjacent attackers can sniff the cleartext login flow and session cookie, which lacks the Secure attribute while responses omit HSTS, to hijack kernel API sessions.

Executive ViewAI
SiYuan versions 3.6.0 through 3.8.6 fail to enforce TLS for kernel API traffic, potentially exposing administrative credentials and session cookies to network-adjacent attackers. This undermines the confidentiality of sensitive data and could lead to unauthorized access to the SiYuan workspace, affecting all users who have enabled the networkServeTLS setting. Leadership should prioritize remediation to maintain trust and data integrity.
Apply vendor patch: upgrade to SiYuan v3.8.7. Until patched, restrict kernel port access to trusted networks via firewall rules or VPN, disable the networkServeTLS setting if not required, and monitor for anomalous session activity.
