MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Persistence The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires network reachability to the SiYuan HTTP API endpoint /api/search/searchEmbedBlock on a vulnerable instance (<= v3.7.2). The endpoint is protected only by CheckAuth, so exploitation succeeds either with the publish RoleReader token or fully anonymously when publish authentication is disabled - the latter being the true PR:N case. The attack targets content in opened cleartext notebooks only; encrypted per-box notebooks are excluded and thus limit the blast radius. The key limiting factor is deployment posture: an instance not exposed to untrusted networks, or one with publish authentication enabled, raises the bar from anonymous to token-holding access. No user interaction is required. |
| Impact | The signals are strongly aligned toward high priority. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) indicates remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation with no user interaction, and the vulnerable-system impacts VC:H/VI:H plus subsequent-system SC:H/SI:H yield a 9.9 base score reflecting both confidentiality and integrity loss extending beyond the immediate component. The stacked-query capability makes the technical impact 'total' for the data plane (read and write). Reporting by VulnCheck (a credible exploit-intelligence vendor) and an existing GHSA advisory raise confidence in the finding. Countervailing context: PR:N is only fully accurate when publish authentication is disabled; in a hardened deployment the endpoint still requires the publish RoleReader token, which is a low bar but not truly anonymous - so real-world exposure depends on configuration. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided, so despite the critical rating there is no evidence of active or automated exploitation yet; treat this as high-urgency-to-patch rather than confirmed in-the-wild. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a self-hosted SiYuan publish endpoint (either anonymously where publish auth is disabled, or with a low-privilege RoleReader token) sends a crafted request to /api/search/searchEmbedBlock containing a stacked SQL payload. The first statement exfiltrates block content from cleartext notebooks, while a trailing statement (after a semicolon) issues UPDATE/DELETE/INSERT operations to tamper with or destroy notes. No public POC was provided, but the low complexity and unauthenticated network vector make exploitation straightforward once the endpoint is exposed. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 03, 2026
SQL injection in SiYuan personal knowledge management (versions <= v3.7.2) lets attackers pass arbitrary SQL statements verbatim to the primary read-write siyuan.db handle via the /api/search/searchEmbedBlock endpoint. Because the endpoint is gated only by CheckAuth, it is reachable with the low-privilege publish RoleReader token - and by fully anonymous users when publish authentication is disabled - and the driver's support for stacked statements allows both reading and modifying content across all opened cleartext notebooks. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the flaw was reported by VulnCheck and carries a critical 9.9 CVSS 4.0 score; it is fixed in v3.7.3.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to SiYuan v3.7.3 or later, which fixes the endpoint per GHSA-vh22-h7hf-www7 (https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/security/advisories/GHSA-vh22-h7hf-www7). Until upgrading, the highest-impact compensating control is to ensure publish authentication is enabled (never expose the publish service anonymously), which forces attackers to at least present a RoleReader token and closes the fully-anonymous path - at the cost of requiring credentials for legitimate published-notebook readers. Additionally, restrict network access to the SiYuan service so it is not reachable from untrusted networks (bind to localhost or place behind an authenticated reverse proxy / VPN), and where feasible block or filter requests to /api/search/searchEmbedBlock at a proxy layer, accepting that this may break embed-block search for legitimate clients. For highly sensitive notebooks, use SiYuan's per-box encryption, since encrypted notebooks are excluded from the exposed cleartext handle. See the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/siyuan-before-sql-injection-via-searchembedblock) for details.

Technical ContextAI · show details
SiYuan is a self-hosted, block-based note-taking/knowledge-management application that stores notebook content in a local SQLite database (siyuan.db). The vulnerability is a classic CWE-89 SQL Injection: the /api/search/searchEmbedBlock endpoint - intended to run scoped embed-block search queries - instead forwards a client-supplied SQL statement directly to the main read-write database handle without enforcing single-statement execution, read-only mode, or admin-only access. The underlying SQLite driver executes stacked (semicolon-separated) statements, so the injection is not limited to SELECT reads; it becomes a full read/write primitive. Encrypted per-box notebooks are excluded because their contents are not present in cleartext in the shared handle, but every opened cleartext notebook is exposed. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*.

2DescriptionCVE.org
SiYuan versions <= v3.7.2 expose the /api/search/searchEmbedBlock endpoint, which passes a client-supplied SQL statement verbatim to the main read-write siyuan.db handle with no single-statement, read-only, or admin restrictions. The endpoint is gated only by CheckAuth, making it reachable by the publish RoleReader token and by anonymous users when publish authentication is disabled. Because the underlying driver executes stacked statements, an attacker can read and modify content across all opened cleartext notebooks (encrypted per-box notebooks are excluded). Fixed in v3.7.3.

Executive ViewAI
SiYuan personal knowledge management deployments running version 3.7.2 or earlier face immediate risk of total data compromise through a critical SQL injection vulnerability in the search API endpoint. The flaw enables attackers to read and modify all stored notebooks with minimal or no authentication requirements, directly threatening the confidentiality and integrity of organizational knowledge bases. This vulnerability requires emergency remediation due to its critical severity and broad attack surface.
Vendor-released patch: v3.7.3. Interim mitigations pending patch deployment: restrict network access to the /api/search/searchEmbedBlock endpoint and disable public authentication mode; implement SQL query logging with alerts for anomalous patterns.
