| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a baserCMS mail form with image authentication enabled (auth_captcha = 1) - if no form has captcha enabled, there is no control to bypass and the issue is moot. The affected endpoint is the public API POST /baser/api/bc-mail/mail_messages/add/{mailContentId}.json, which is guest-reachable by design, has FormProtection explicitly disabled in beforeFilter(), and has no rate limiting. The isAccepting() check (added for CVE-2026-30878) is still enforced, so forms that are closed/not accepting submissions are rejected and are not exploitable. The database-flooding impact additionally requires save_info enabled on the form; the third-party mail-relay/auto-reply impact additionally requires the form to contain an attacker-controllable email field feeding sendFormToUser. No authentication or user interaction is needed for affected forms. The main limiting factor is therefore configuration-specific: only captcha-enabled, accepting mail forms are impacted, and the per-vector impacts depend on save_info and the presence of an email field. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded control-failure, not a critical emergency. The CVSS 3.1 score is 5.3 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N - network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated, no user interaction, with impact capped at low integrity and no confidentiality or availability loss. That profile is fully consistent with the CWE-799 (Improper Control of Interaction Frequency) classification and the described abuse: captcha bypass enabling automated mail-form submissions. No EPSS score was supplied, so exploitation-probability cannot be quantified from this data. The vulnerability is not on CISA KEV and no confirmed public working exploit is referenced - the GHSA advisory contains detailed code-level reproduction steps and a local dynamic verification by the reporter, but that is distinct from a weaponized public exploit. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month', which aligns with a real-but-moderate priority: trivially automatable (PR:N/AC:L, FormProtection disabled, no rate limit) but low technical impact. The practical risk driver is the mail-relay/phishing vector (sendFormToUser delivers attacker-composed content to arbitrary third parties from the site's own mail server), which carries reputational and blocklisting consequences beyond the raw score. Net: patch within the normal maintenance cycle; it is not a drop-everything issue, and only forms with auth_captcha enabled are actually affected. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker scripts repeated POST requests to /baser/api/bc-mail/mail_messages/add/{mailContentId}.json against a baserCMS mail form that has image captcha (auth_captcha) enabled, omitting the captcha_id/auth_captcha parameters that the web UI requires. Because the API never calls BcCaptchaService::check(), each request is accepted, flooding the administrator inbox, persisting junk mail_messages rows when save_info is on, and - when an email field is present - relaying attacker-authored auto-reply content to arbitrary third-party addresses via the site's mail server. No public weaponized exploit is referenced, but the advisory documents working code-level reproduction steps. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
Unauthenticated visitors can bypass the image-captcha requirement on baserCMS mail forms by posting directly to the public Web API endpoint POST /baser/api/bc-mail/mail_messages/add/{mailContentId}.json, whose add() action and MailMessagesService::create() never invoke BcCaptchaService::check() the way the web-UI MailController::submit() flow does. Only mail forms that are still accepting submissions and have auth_captcha enabled are exposed (5.0.0 through 5.3.1 and 5.4.0 through 5.4.1); closed forms are still rejected by the isAccepting() guard added for CVE-2026-30878. A successful bypass lets an attacker script repeated submissions that flood the administrator inbox, cause the site's own mail server to send attacker-influenced auto-replies to third-party addresses when the form has an email field, and accumulate mail_messages rows when save_info is enabled; severity is 5.3 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N), there is no CISA KEV entry, and the upstream advisory supplies code-level reproduction steps rather than confirmed working exploit tooling.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to baserCMS 5.3.2 (5.3.x branch) or 5.4.2 (5.4.x branch); the fix commit https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/commit/3444154ca40f308ade8991e54459248f866dcf61 adds the missing BcCaptchaServiceInterface check to BcMail\Controller\Api\MailMessagesController::add() so an enabled auth_captcha is enforced before create()/sendMail(), returning HTTP 400 with an auth_captcha validation error and sending nothing when the challenge is missing or wrong. Vendor advisories are at https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/security/advisories/GHSA-cpxq-6gjp-m59g with release notes at https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/releases/tag/5.3.2 and https://github.com/baserproject/basercms/releases/tag/5.4.2. Until the upgrade is applied, the concrete exposure reduction is to inventory which mail forms have image authentication enabled and are accepting submissions, since forms with auth_captcha off have no control to bypass and closed forms are already rejected by isAccepting(); where API-driven form submission is not actually used, blocking POST requests to /baser/api/bc-mail/mail_messages/add/ at the reverse proxy or web server removes reachability of the flaw, at the cost of breaking any legitimate client that submits through that JSON endpoint, and temporarily taking the affected form out of service achieves the same result for that form only.

Technical ContextAI · show details
baserCMS is a CakePHP-based website development framework, and the affected component is the bc-mail plugin's public Web API layer. The API route prefix carries no authentication by design, so the guest-reachable endpoint is the API twin of the interactive MailController::submit() flow; the UI flow validates the CAPTCHA by calling BcCaptchaService::check() with the captcha_id and auth_captcha parameters (the answer is compared against a value held in the session), whereas the API controller's add() action contains no reference to captcha at all and delegates persistence to MailMessagesService::create(), which performs no verification either. Two additional properties make the missing check easy to monetize: FormProtection is explicitly disabled in the API controller's beforeFilter() (so CakePHP's form-tampering protection does not impede scripted posts), and the API path has no rate limiting. The record is filed under CWE-799 (Improper Control of Interaction Frequency), which captures the absence of frequency/challenge enforcement rather than a memory-safety or injection defect; the specific failure is a control-parity gap between the UI and API code paths, the same shape as the earlier GHSA-8cr7-r8qwgp3c / CVE-2026-30878 issue in the same file. The upstream fix injects BcCaptchaServiceInterface into add(), mirrors the UI conditional on $mailContent->auth_captcha, and on failure sets an auth_captcha validation error and raises a PersistenceFailedException, which the test suite confirms returns HTTP 400 with no mail sent and no row persisted. A related low-severity note in the advisory is that the sibling validate() action also skips isAccepting(), but it neither stores nor sends anything, so it is limited to acting as a validation oracle against a closed form. The 'Information Disclosure' tag carried with this record does not describe the demonstrated impact, which is unsolicited message submission and mail relay.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
baserCMS is a website development framework. In versions 5.0.0 before 5.3.2 and 5.4.0 before 5.4.2, the public POST /baser/api/bc-mail/mail_messages/add/{mailContentId}.json endpoint accepts submissions without enforcing the form's auth_captcha setting. BcMail\Controller\Api\MailMessagesController::add() and MailMessagesService::create() omit the BcCaptchaService::check() verification of captcha_id and auth_captcha performed by MailController::submit() in the web UI. An unauthenticated attacker who can reach the API can therefore automate submissions without solving the enabled image challenge. The API disables FormProtection and has no rate limit; submissions can generate administrator-inbox spam, send attacker-influenced auto-replies to third parties when an email field is present, and accumulate mail_messages database records when save_info is enabled. The API already enforces the isAccepting() check added for CVE-2026-30878; the missing CAPTCHA check is a separate control failure. This issue has been patched in versions 5.3.2 and 5.4.2.
