Exploitation Conditions

Requires four distinct ordinary authenticated ClawHub accounts (PR:L - no moderator, admin, or elevated role). Each account files an abuse report against a visible skill; reaching the four-reporter threshold auto-transitions the skill to moderationStatus: hidden with no moderator decision in the loop. The reporter quota counts only reports filed against currently-visible targets, so the same accounts can repeat the hide against additional skills, and official/vendor skills are not exempt. Limiting factors: attacker must be able to create or control multiple authenticated accounts and coordinate them; impact is confined to catalog visibility (hiding), with no data read or code execution. Applies to self-hosted deployments at or before revision cbfee7343ddc that have not updated to 8c2de6c506bb or a later descendant.

Impact

Signals conflict between the vendor CVSS and the actual mechanism. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) claims HIGH confidentiality, integrity, AND availability impact, but the description supports none of that severity: the flaw lets coordinated accounts flip a skill's moderationStatus to 'hidden'. There is no data disclosure, so VC:H (confidentiality) is unsupported - the impact is availability of catalog content (skills disappear) plus limited integrity (moderation state is tampered without a moderator decision). The tag 'Information Disclosure' compounds this mislabel; this is an interaction-frequency/abuse issue (CWE-799), not a disclosure. On the exploitability side the signals are consistent and favorable to an attacker: network vector, low complexity, and only ordinary authenticated accounts (PR:L, no moderator role). EPSS, KEV, and public POC are all absent from the input, so there is no evidence of active exploitation - treat exploitation status as 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. Net: this is a real, easily-reproducible abuse/griefing bug against a niche product, but the 8.7 CVSS overstates true risk because it attributes confidentiality impact that the mechanism does not produce. Priority is MEDIUM (integrity/availability of the catalog), not the CRITICAL that 8.7 implies.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker registers or controls four ordinary ClawHub accounts, then has each account file an abuse report against a target skill; once the fourth report lands, ClawHub automatically sets the skill to hidden with no moderator ever reviewing it. Because the reporter quota only counts reports against still-visible skills, the same four accounts recycle their quota to hide additional skills - including official ones - effectively censoring catalog content at will. No public exploit code is referenced, but the technique requires no special tooling.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Coordinated abuse reporting in the self-hosted ClawHub application/backend lets four distinct ordinary authenticated accounts push any visible skill to moderationStatus: hidden with no moderator in the loop, silently removing it from the catalog - and official/vendor-published skills are not exempt. Because the reporter quota only counts reports filed against currently-visible targets, the same four accounts can recycle the trick against additional skills, so the effect is repeatable catalog suppression rather than a one-off. Exploitation requires only ordinary authenticated users (CVSS vector PR:L, no moderator or admin role) and coordinated multi-account control; no public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) have been identified at time of analysis. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 8.7 (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) is more severe than the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment of AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H, which correctly bounds the impact to catalog visibility (no data read, no code execution); affected deployments are self-hosted ClawHub at or before revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41, while the npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate products and are not affected.

RemediationAI

Primary fix: update self-hosted ClawHub to revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 or a later descendant, which includes the PR #3681 remediation - patch availability is confirmed by the vendor, but the fix is referenced as a commit/revision rather than a tagged release, so a released patched version number is not independently confirmed and operators should pin the commit hash or a descendant. Until the upgrade can be applied, the most effective compensating control is to break the four-reporter auto-hide path: require an explicit moderator decision before a reported skill is hidden (trade-off: increased moderation latency and backlog, plus the need for on-call moderation staffing), or temporarily raise the auto-hide threshold and add per-account, per-target, and per-time-window report deduplication so quota cannot be refreshed simply by hiding the target (trade-off: genuine abuse may linger visible longer). Reducing the supply of disposable accounts is a strong secondary control - restrict self-service signup via SSO/verified-domain or invite-only registration and monitor for clusters of accounts reporting the same skills (trade-off: lower organic growth and added onboarding friction). Finally, audit and re-publish any skills currently at moderationStatus: hidden without a moderator decision, and monitor the catalog feed for unexplained visibility drops; consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/openclaw/clawhub/security/advisories/GHSA-5jj4-m8c9-gwcq and the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/clawhub-before-8c2de6c506-skill-hiding-via-coordinated-reports for updates.

Technical ContextAI · show details

ClawHub (openclaw/clawhub) is a Node.js/TypeScript application whose backend is built on Convex (the source tree contains convex/ functions and uses @convex-dev/rate-limiter), serving a skill catalog with a moderation workflow that transitions listings between visible and moderationStatus: hidden. The root cause is CWE-799 (Improper Control of Interaction Frequency): the auto-hide threshold counts abuse reports without properly binding report frequency and reporter identity to the interaction, so a small set of actors can satisfy the threshold rather than a diverse, independent reporter population. The design also counts a reporter's quota only against reports filed on currently-visible targets, which means an account's reporting budget is effectively refreshed once its target is hidden, enabling serial re-use of the same four accounts against new skills - an interaction-frequency/rate-governance failure rather than a memory-safety, injection, or access-control bug. The CPE string cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:clawhub:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* is a wildcard covering ClawHub releases, and the vendor notes the full historical affected range was not established, with the issue confirmed at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41 and fixed in revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 (PR #3681). The published commit diff is dominated by test changes around verified client IP handling and route-level rate-limit defaults (verifiedClientIp mocks, revised download/downloadMetrics identity expectations, rate-limit route assertions), consistent with a rework of ingress trust and quota/abuse accounting in the same fix series.

DescriptionCVE.org

ClawHub (openclaw/clawhub) application/backend contains a flaw in the skill report moderation flow: four distinct ordinary authenticated accounts can report a visible skill and trigger automatic hiding (moderationStatus: hidden) of that skill from the catalog without any moderator decision. Because the reporter quota counts only reports filed against visible targets, the same accounts can repeat the process against additional skills; official skills are not exempt. The issue was confirmed at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41; the complete historical affected range was not established. The fix (PR #3681) is included in revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650; self-hosted deployments should update to that revision or a later descendant. The npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate products and are not affected.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

The self-hosted ClawHub application is vulnerable to a coordinated abuse reporting flaw that allows authenticated users with low privileges to hide any skill, including official ones, from the catalog. This can disrupt access to critical resources and undermine trust in the platform's integrity. Leadership should prioritize patching because the attack is repeatable and requires only ordinary accounts, potentially enabling sustained suppression of key functionality.
