Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires reaching the public profile preview's image-fetching feature and supplying an image URL whose hostname passes the textual private-address pattern check while its DNS resolution points to an internal or loopback address (or changes between validation and connection via DNS rebinding). Limiting factors: impact is scoped to the preview's outbound fetch - the reporter only demonstrated a loopback connection and did NOT show access to production internal services, credential disclosure, or code execution; the hosted clawhub.ai instance was patched on 2026-09-11, so only self-hosted deployments running revision cbfee734 (or unfixed ancestors) before revision 8c2de6c5 remain exposed. The npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate products and are unaffected.

Impact

This is a genuine but modest-impact SSRF (CWE-918) in the ClawHub profile-image preview, reported by VulnCheck with a vendor CVSS 4.0 base of 6.9 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:L). The signals are internally consistent and, importantly, honest: the vendor scored NO confidentiality impact on the vulnerable system and only LOW subsequent-system C/I/A, matching the description's explicit statement that a maintainer-run local harness only demonstrated an outbound connection to an owner-controlled loopback listener - access to production internal services, credential disclosure, and code execution were NOT demonstrated. There is no EPSS score provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The one clear conflict is the 'RCE' tag: nothing in the description, CVSS vector, or advisory supports remote code execution - it directly contradicts the stated 'code execution was not demonstrated.' Net: this is a real-but-low-priority SSRF whose worst realistic outcome is reaching internal/loopback services, not a high-urgency issue; the hosted clawhub.ai instance was already patched on 2026-09-11, so residual risk is limited to un-updated self-hosted deployments.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker submits a crafted image URL to ClawHub's public profile preview using a public-looking hostname that either resolves directly to an internal/loopback address or flips resolution after the textual private-address check passes (DNS rebinding). The server then fetches the URL, opening a connection to an internal service the attacker chose; the maintainer's own harness confirmed an outbound connection to a loopback listener, but no internal data exfiltration, credential theft, or code execution was shown. No public exploit code is referenced.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Server-side request forgery in ClawHub's public profile preview allows unauthenticated remote attackers to supply an image URL whose hostname passes the textual private-address check but whose DNS resolution points to an internal, loopback, or rebinding-controlled destination, causing the backend to issue outbound requests to attacker-chosen internal targets. The flaw affects self-hosted ClawHub (openclaw/clawhub) application/backend deployments at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41 or unfixed ancestors; the hosted clawhub.ai instance was patched on 2026-09-11, so only unpatched self-hosted instances remain exposed, and the npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate, unaffected products. No public exploit code and no CISA KEV entry were identified at time of analysis, and the reporting researcher demonstrated only a loopback listener connection - access to production internal services, credential disclosure, and code execution were not demonstrated.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: update self-hosted ClawHub deployments to revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 (PR #3683, https://github.com/openclaw/clawhub/commit/8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650) or a later descendant; the hosted clawhub.ai service was already patched on 2026-09-11, and no vendor patch is required by users of the separate, unaffected npm CLI or OpenClaw runtime. Where the update cannot be applied immediately, the most direct compensating control is to disable the public profile preview's remote image-fetching feature, accepting the loss of that preview functionality; alternatively, enforce strict outbound egress filtering from the backend host so requests to RFC1918, loopback, link-local, and cloud metadata addresses (for example 169.254.169.254) are dropped at the network layer, with the trade-off that legitimate fetches from some external or CDN-hosted image sources may be blocked and the filter must be maintained as address space evolves. Because the flaw is a validate-then-connect gap, hostname string denylists alone are insufficient - any mitigation must resolve and pin the destination IP at connection time and re-check it, or route image fetches through an isolated proxy that has no access to internal services. Full details and any vendor-recommended workarounds are in the GHSA-48gp-hx8w-wjvm advisory referenced above; operators should also monitor internal service logs for unexpected inbound requests from the ClawHub host as a detection measure.

Technical ContextAI · show details

This is a classic server-side request forgery (CWE-918) in the Convex/Node.js-based ClawHub backend. The public profile preview accepts a user-supplied image URL and applies a textual denylist of private-address patterns to the hostname string, but never validates or pins the address returned by DNS, and never re-validates the destination at connection time. Two failure modes follow: a public-looking hostname can resolve directly to an internal or loopback address, or the resolution can change between the validation step and the actual fetch (DNS rebinding), so the check and the connection observe different IPs. Exploitation requires reaching the profile preview's image-fetching feature and controlling DNS for the supplied hostname; the CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:L/SI:L/SA:L) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N) both confirm this is unauthenticated and network-reachable, with low confidentiality and integrity impact and scope change. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:clawhub:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* maps to the openclaw/clawhub product broadly, but the complete historical affected version range was not established; the issue was confirmed at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41. The root cause is insufficient destination validation - the fix at commit 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 (PR #3683) hardens request trust and validation logic, consistent with the accompanying test changes that mock verified client IP handling and reject unverified forwarded or client-supplied identity values. Tags supplied with the record (SSRF, Node.js, Clawhub, RCE) should be read cautiously: RCE was not demonstrated, and the assessed impact is limited to the preview's outbound fetch.

DescriptionCVE.org

ClawHub (openclaw/clawhub) application/backend contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in the public profile preview's image fetching. The preview accepts a user-supplied image URL and checks the textual hostname against private-address patterns, but does not validate or pin the resolved network destination, so a public-looking hostname can resolve to an internal address or change resolution between validation and connection (DNS rebinding). A maintainer-run local harness demonstrated an outbound connection to an owner-controlled loopback listener; access to production internal services, credential disclosure, and code execution were not demonstrated. The issue was confirmed at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41; the complete historical affected range was not established. Fixed by PR #3683, included in revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650, which was deployed to clawhub.ai on 2026-09-11; self-hosted deployments should update to that revision or a later descendant. The npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate products and are not affected.
