MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a victim running Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 to load attacker-controlled HTML/web content that exercises the ANGLE component (Chrome's OpenGL ES abstraction used for GPU-accelerated rendering); no authentication and no non-default configuration are needed. The primary limiting factors are: (1) mandatory user interaction (UI:R) - the victim must navigate to or render the malicious page; and (2) sandbox containment - successful exploitation yields arbitrary code execution only within the renderer sandbox, so full host compromise requires chaining an additional sandbox-escape vulnerability. These constraints meaningfully reduce realistic impact below what the 8.8 base score implies. |
| Impact | Signals are mixed. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, score 8.8) rates this high, reflecting remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity exploitation requiring only that a victim open a crafted HTML page. However, Google's own Chromium security severity is explicitly rated 'Low', and the description states code execution is confined 'inside the sandbox' - meaning the flaw alone does not achieve full host compromise and would need to be chained with a separate sandbox-escape to be fully weaponized. This is the key contrast: the 8.8 base score does not model the renderer-sandbox containment, so the CVSS severity overstates standalone real-world impact. No CISA KEV listing is present in the input, so this is not confirmed actively exploited; no POC is referenced; and no EPSS score was provided, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from available data. Net: a patch-promptly item given Chrome's ubiquity and the ease of delivery, but not an emergency relative to its headline CVSS, because exploitation yields only sandboxed code execution and no public exploit is identified. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker hosts or injects a malicious web page containing crafted content that drives ANGLE (Chrome's graphics abstraction layer) into a use-after-free condition. When a victim using a vulnerable Chrome build visits the page, the freed-then-reused object is manipulated to achieve arbitrary code execution within the renderer sandbox. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and full system compromise would additionally require a sandbox escape. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026
Use-after-free memory corruption in ANGLE, Chrome's OpenGL ES abstraction layer, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code inside the renderer sandbox in Google Chrome versions prior to 156.0.8078.47 when a victim loads a crafted HTML page (CVSS 3.1: 8.8, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H). Exploitation is unauthenticated from the network but requires mandatory user interaction to render the malicious content, and the resulting code execution is contained by Chrome's renderer sandbox, so full host compromise would require chaining a separate sandbox-escape flaw; Google rates the Chromium security severity as Low, which is consistent with that containment. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, no CISA KEV listing, and no EPSS score was supplied; a vendor patch is available in Chrome 156.0.8078.47.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Google Chrome 156.0.8078.47 or later - the standard channel auto-update will deliver it, or users can force it via chrome://settings/help and relaunch; enterprises should confirm the minimum version through their update or patch-management tooling and Chrome Enterprise policies. Details are in the vendor advisory at https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2026/10/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_02018666648.html and the Chromium issue at https://issues.chromium.org/issues/536445815. Where immediate updating is impossible, reduce the ANGLE attack surface with the trade-offs understood: launch Chrome with --disable-webgl (or set site-level WebGL restrictions) to block the API path the flaw lives behind, accepting that 3D and WebGL-based applications will break; or disable hardware acceleration / GPU rasterization so rendering falls back to software, which cuts GPU-stack exposure at a noticeable performance cost for graphics-heavy sites. Restricting browsing to trusted content and enforcing link/attachment filtering lowers the chance of a victim reaching crafted HTML, and keeping Chrome's renderer sandbox and site isolation enabled preserves the containment barrier that keeps this bug from becoming host-level compromise without a chained escape.

Technical ContextAI · show details
ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) is the translation layer Chrome uses to map OpenGL ES API calls onto Vulkan, Direct3D, Metal, or desktop OpenGL so that GPU-accelerated rendering - WebGL, canvas, and compositing - works consistently across platforms. The flaw is CWE-416 (use-after-free): an object is released while a live pointer to it remains, and a subsequent dereference operates on memory that the allocator may have already reassigned to attacker-influenced data. In a graphics stack this class of bug typically involves shader/program objects, texture or buffer resources, or command-buffer bookkeeping; heap grooming through crafted page content can turn the dangling reference into controlled corruption of a vtable or function pointer and redirect execution. The critical boundary is architectural: the corruption occurs in the renderer process, which is sandboxed, so the primitive yields arbitrary code execution inside the sandbox rather than directly on the host. Reaching the operating system requires a second, independent sandbox-escape vulnerability, which is why the practical risk is materially lower than the 8.8 base score suggests and why Google assigned a Low Chromium severity.

Remote crafted-page delivery gives AV:N/AC:L/PR:N, victim navigation gives UI:R, and sandboxed code execution still yields high C/I/A within the renderer with no scope change.

Use after free in ANGLE in Google Chrome prior to 156.0.8078.47 allowed a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code inside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: Low)
Executive ViewAI
Google Chrome versions prior to 156.0.8078.47 contain a high-severity memory-corruption issue in the ANGLE graphics layer that could allow a crafted webpage to execute code inside the browser's renderer sandbox. The attack requires user interaction and the sandbox contains the immediate impact, so the primary enterprise exposure is an unpatched browser fleet rather than automatic host compromise. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but leadership should still drive rapid remediation because the flaw could become more dangerous if chained with a sandbox escape.

Attack Technique
Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
