V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture TOCTOU prevention
|
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires Apache Tomcat 9.0.47-9.0.122 running with the APR/Native connector explicitly configured to use a unix domain socket (a non-default, specific deployment mode) - the NIO-connector variant was already fixed under CVE-2026-65183. The attacker must be a local, unprivileged user on the same host and must win a TOCTOU timing race during socket creation, accessing the socket before Tomcat applies correct permissions. Limiting factors: local host access is mandatory (no network/remote path), the vulnerable APR/Native + unix-domain-socket configuration must be in use, and success depends on a narrow, timing-sensitive race window. |
| Impact | No CVSS vector, EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is provided for this CVE, so severity must be inferred from the description and CWE-367 (TOCTOU). The vulnerability is a local race condition - it requires an attacker to already have a local account on the host running Tomcat and to win a timing window during unix domain socket creation for the APR/Native connector. This is NOT a remote, network-reachable flaw, which sharply limits real-world risk compared to typical high-CVSS Tomcat CVEs. Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis; not listed in CISA KEV. The practical priority is MODERATE-to-LOW for most deployments because it requires a non-default connector configuration (APR/Native with unix domain sockets), local access, and winning a narrow race - but it is a credible local information-disclosure/trust-boundary issue on multi-user hosts where those conditions hold. Notably this is an incomplete-fix follow-up: the earlier fix for CVE-2026-65183 only patched the NIO connector, so defenders who believed they were patched via that CVE may still be exposed on APR/Native. Authentication requirements cannot be confirmed from CVSS because no vector was supplied; the description states an 'unauthorised local user,' indicating low local privileges, but per analysis rules this is not CVSS-confirmed. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged local user on a server running Apache Tomcat (9.0.47-9.0.122) with the APR/Native connector configured to use a unix domain socket races the socket-creation routine, accessing the socket in the window before correct filesystem permissions are applied. Having obtained access to the connector socket, the attacker can interact with or observe traffic that should have been restricted. No public exploit code is known, and exploitation depends on winning a timing-sensitive TOCTOU window. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 20, 2026
Local unprivileged users on hosts running Apache Tomcat 9.0.47 through 9.0.122 with the APR/Native connector configured for unix domain sockets can exploit a TOCTOU race during socket creation to gain unauthorized access to the socket, with limited confidentiality and integrity impact per the assessed vector (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N). The NIO-connector form of this issue was fixed under CVE-2026-65183; this CVE covers the remaining APR/Native path. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the vendor-released fix is Tomcat 9.0.123.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Apache Tomcat to 9.0.123, which fixes the APR/Native connector TOCTOU issue; see https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/tr0q87qwvs80p9hc53tkwpzvnx0ywftr. If upgrading immediately is not possible, avoid the vulnerable deployment mode by not using the APR/Native connector with unix domain sockets, switch to the NIO connector or a TCP socket where feasible, and restrict the socket directory so untrusted local users cannot traverse or write to it, for example a dedicated Tomcat group-owned directory with 0750 or stricter permissions. These workarounds reduce exposure but do not eliminate the race if the APR/Native unix-domain-socket path remains enabled, and changing connectors may affect performance or native-library-dependent features.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a time-of-check time-of-use race (CWE-367) in Apache Tomcat's APR/Native connector when it creates a unix domain socket. Tomcat creates the socket file and then applies restrictive ownership and permissions; between those steps, a local user who can access the socket directory may connect to or manipulate the socket before permissions are enforced. Exploitation requires the non-default APR/Native connector plus unix-domain-socket configuration, local host access, and winning a narrow timing window, consistent with the assessed AV:L/AC:H/PR:L vector. The prior CVE-2026-65183 fix only covered the NIO connector, leaving this APR/Native code path vulnerable across 9.0.47 through 9.0.122.

Local-only access (AV:L) with a low-privileged local account (PR:L), TOCTOU timing race gives AC:H; socket access yields limited confidentiality/integrity impact, no availability effect.

DescriptionCVE.org
Time-of-check time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition vulnerability in Apache Tomcat when creating unix domain sockets for the APR/Native connector allows an unauthorised local user to access the unix domain socket. The fix for CVE-2026-65183 only addressed the NIO connector. It did not address the same issue in the APR/Native connector.
This issue affects Apache Tomcat: from 9.0.47 through 9.0.122.
Users are recommended to upgrade to version 9.0.123, which fixes the issue.
