The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires three concrete conditions: (1) an attacker-controlled Subscriber-level (or higher) account, which in practice means the site permits open user registration; (2) the attacker storing a shortcode payload in their own Biographical Info (user description) field via the WordPress REST API or the wp-admin profile editor; and (3) a front-end request that resolves that author's description without redirection - specifically an author archive reached through the ?author= query parameter while Slim SEO's auto_redirection setting is disabled. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: exploitation is authenticated (not anonymous), the author-description code path must actually be rendered to unauthenticated visitors, the non-default auto_redirection=disabled configuration is needed for the ?author= vector, and only versions up to and including 4.11.1 are affected (fixed in 4.11.2, which strips shortcodes from the bio). Actual impact further depends on which shortcodes other installed plugins expose.

Impact

This is a moderate, authentication-gated stored code-injection issue (CWE-94) rather than a top-priority emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N, base 5.4) is internally consistent with the description: exploitation is network-reachable but requires PR:L - a Subscriber-level account - so per the precision rules this is authenticated exploitation, not unauthenticated. No EPSS score, SSVC decision, or CISA KEV status was supplied, and no POC/exploit flag is set, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The absence of EPSS/KEV data is not itself a contradiction, but it means there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation to elevate priority. The real limiting factor is the need for a Subscriber account AND a non-default author-resolution path (auto_redirection disabled) for the stored shortcode to fire on front-end requests. Note a tension worth verifying: the vulnerability caps impact at C:L/I:L because base WordPress shortcodes are limited, but 'arbitrary shortcode execution' can escalate to significant impact (approaching RCE) if other installed plugins register dangerous shortcodes - so the 'RCE' tag is plausible only in specific stacks, and real-world severity is deployment-dependent. Overall: a legitimate issue to patch promptly on sites allowing open registration, but not a drop-everything item absent exploitation signals.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker self-registers a Subscriber account on a WordPress site running Slim SEO <= 4.11.1 and saves a malicious shortcode into their own Biographical Info field via the REST API or the wp-admin profile page. When any unauthenticated visitor loads a page that resolves that author's description - for example an author archive reached via ?author= while auto_redirection is disabled - Slim SEO passes the bio through do_shortcode and the payload executes. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, but the patch diff (PR #296) publicly reveals the vulnerable do_shortcode call.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 16, 2026

Arbitrary shortcode execution in the Slim SEO WordPress plugin (all versions up to and including 4.11.1) allows an authenticated attacker holding a Subscriber-level account to store a shortcode payload in their own Biographical Info field, which the plugin subsequently passes to do_shortcode when rendering that author's description on the front end. Exploitation is gated by concrete prerequisites - an attacker-controlled low-privilege account (in practice, open user registration), a front-end request that resolves the author description without redirection (the ?author= query parameter while Slim SEO's auto_redirection setting is disabled), and the presence of other plugins whose shortcodes are worth invoking - and the resulting impact depends on which shortcodes other installed plugins expose, making this a moderate, authentication-gated code-injection issue rather than a top-priority emergency. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the vendor shipped a fix in 4.11.2 that strips shortcodes from the user bio.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Slim SEO to version 4.11.2 or later - the vendor-released patch (tracked in GitHub PR elightup/slim-seo#296 and shipped in the Trac changeset linked above) calls strip_shortcodes() on the user description before it enters the MetaTags data array, so the shortcode payload stored in a bio is no longer expanded. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply layered compensating controls, each with trade-offs: (1) close open registration or otherwise prevent untrusted users from obtaining Subscriber accounts, since the attack requires an attacker-controlled account - this breaks public sign-up or membership workflows on the site; (2) keep Slim SEO's auto_redirection setting enabled (the default), which prevents the ?author= query-parameter request from resolving the author description and blocks the primary unauthenticated delivery path, at the cost of the redirect behavior the site owner may have intentionally disabled; (3) audit existing user Biographical Info fields and blank any that contain shortcode brackets, remembering that a Subscriber can simply re-save the payload until the plugin is patched; (4) if other installed plugins register dangerous shortcodes, disable or restrict those plugins temporarily to shrink the blast radius, accepting the loss of their functionality. Standard WordPress hardening (WAF rules blocking shortcode syntax in profile updates, monitoring for unusual REST API profile writes) can slow exploitation but is not a substitute for the 4.11.2 upgrade. Patch status: vendor-released patch, version 4.11.2.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a CWE-94 code-injection class bug in the WordPress ecosystem, specifically in Slim SEO's MetaTags component. Slim SEO builds meta tags and author metadata from WordPress user objects; in src/MetaTags/Data.php the get_user() method took the raw $user->description (the Biographical Info field, which WordPress deliberately allows Subscribers, and any user who can edit their own profile, to write) and passed it through the MetaTags pipeline, where it was ultimately processed with do_shortcode. Because do_shortcode expands any registered shortcode tag found in a string, an attacker-supplied bio becomes an execution primitive for every shortcode registered by every active plugin on the site - the classic WordPress shortcode-injection pattern. Helper.php (lines 26 and 168) provides the truncation/description helpers involved in that path. The upstream fix in GitHub PR elightup/slim-seo#296 adds strip_shortcodes( (string) $user->description ) in MetaTags/Data.php before the value is stored into the 'description' and 'auto_description' keys, with an explicit comment that the user bio is editable by Subscribers and must never be shortcode-expanded. Note that shortcode expansion is not the same as arbitrary PHP execution: real-world impact is bounded by the capabilities of whatever shortcodes third-party plugins register (some of which can leak data or perform privileged actions), which is why the assessed CVSS is 5.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N) rather than a critical RCE rating. The affected CPE string cpe:2.3:a:rilwis:slim_seo_-_ai_seo_plugin,_lightweight,_fast_&_automated:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* denotes the plugin by its vendor slug (rilwis) and full product name without version constraints, consistent with 'all versions up to and including 4.11.1'.

DescriptionCVE.org

The The Slim SEO - AI SEO Plugin, Lightweight, Fast & Automated plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary shortcode execution in all versions up to, and including, 4.11.1 This is due to the software allowing users to execute an action that does not properly validate a value before running do_shortcode. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to execute arbitrary shortcodes. A Subscriber-level user need only save the shortcode payload to their own Biographical Info field via the REST API or wp-admin profile page; the shortcode then executes on any unauthenticated front-end request that resolves that author's description, such as requests using the ?author= query parameter when auto_redirection is disabled.
