The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated user holding editor (write) permission on a shared workflow in a multi-user n8n instance. The attacker must author or modify a workflow that uses Workflow Tool or Workflow Retriever inline/nested sub-workflow definitions that reference credentials owned by another user and not accessible to the attacker; execution then runs those sub-workflows with the owner's credential values. Limiting factors: exploitation depends on the credential-sharing/RBAC model being in use, the existence of restricted credentials owned by another user, and the attacker already having editor access to a relevant shared workflow - so single-user instances or instances without shared workflows/credential scoping are not affected (AV:N, PR:L, AT:P). Fixed in n8n 1.123.83.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional privilege/authorization issue rather than a drive-by remote threat. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) scores 7.2 (High) and confirms the attacker must already hold low-level authenticated access - specifically editor rights on a shared workflow - and that a specific attack requirement exists (AT:P), meaning exploitation is not possible against an arbitrary unauthenticated target. The vulnerable/subsequent-system impact (VC:H, SC:H/SI:H) reflects that an attacker crosses an authorization boundary to use another user's high-value credentials, so the real impact is confidentiality of restricted credentials and the systems they unlock. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept are present, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' Net assessment: this matters most for multi-tenant or team n8n deployments that rely on credential-scoping/sharing as a security boundary, where a malicious or compromised editor becomes an insider threat able to abuse an owner's credentials. For single-user or trusted-team instances the practical risk is low. It should be prioritized for patching by organizations using n8n's RBAC/credential-sharing features, but it is not a widespread internet-facing worming threat.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An authenticated n8n user who has been granted editor access to a shared workflow embeds a nested Workflow Tool or Workflow Retriever inline sub-workflow that references credentials owned by another user which they are not authorized to use. When the workflow runs, n8n executes the inline sub-workflow with the owner's credential values, letting the attacker reach systems (APIs, databases, SaaS accounts) protected by those restricted credentials. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; the attack requires existing editor-level sharing access (PR:L, AT:P).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

An authorization bypass in n8n versions before 1.123.83 allows an authenticated user with editor (write) access to a shared workflow to execute restricted credentials that belong to another user, by embedding those credentials inside nested or tool inline sub-workflow definitions. When the workflow runs, the sub-workflows execute using the credential owner's secret values rather than being rejected against the attacker's own credential scope. This is a conditional privilege/authorization issue rather than a drive-by remote threat: it requires a multi-user instance with shared workflows and scoped credential sharing, an editor-level account, and the presence of at least one restricted credential owned by someone else - single-user instances and deployments without shared workflows are not affected. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and there is no confirmed active exploitation; the issue is reported as an Authentication Bypass and is fixed in n8n 1.123.83.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade n8n to 1.123.83 or later; this release corrects the credential authorization check applied to nested and tool-inline sub-workflow definitions, and it is the only complete fix, so prioritize it on any multi-user instance that uses shared workflows or scoped credential sharing. Until the upgrade can be applied, reduce exposure with compensating controls that target the prerequisites rather than the code path: temporarily remove or downgrade editor (write) permissions on shared workflows - particularly for users who should not be able to run workflows under another owner's credential context - accepting the operational cost that affected users can no longer modify those workflows; tighten credential sharing so that no credential is shared into workflow contexts where an editor could embed it (for example, unshare restricted credentials or restrict them to their owning user), which may break legitimate Workflow Tool / Workflow Retriever automations that depend on those secrets; and audit existing workflows for Workflow Tool or Workflow Retriever nodes containing inline/nested definitions that reference credentials the workflow editor does not own, then re-author or disable those workflows. On single-user instances or instances with no shared workflows and no credential scoping, the vulnerable configuration does not exist and the risk is negligible, so upgrade can be scheduled normally. Rotate any credentials that were accessible through such nested sub-workflow definitions, since exposure cannot be ruled out retroactively. Technical ContextAI · show details

n8n is a source-available workflow automation platform in which users build node-based workflows and attach stored credentials (API keys, tokens, database logins) that are resolved at execution time. The vulnerable surface is the AI/agent-related Workflow Tool and Workflow Retriever nodes, which let a parent workflow invoke other workflows as inline or nested sub-workflow definitions rather than as separately permissioned, top-level resources. Because credential resolution for those inline sub-workflow executions is performed against the workflow owner's context, an editor who can only write to a shared workflow can reference credentials that are not exposed to them, and the runtime happily supplies the owner's credential values. CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) is the correct root-cause class: the platform failed to re-validate the caller's effective credential permissions when resolving nested/tool-inline sub-workflow definitions, effectively trusting the authoring context instead of enforcing the RBAC/credential-sharing boundaries at execution time. The vendor's CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:L/VA:N/SC:H/SI:H/SA:N, base 7.2) and our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:L/A:N) agree on the shape of the issue: network-reachable, low-complexity for an attacker who already holds editor rights (PR:L), no user interaction, high confidentiality impact on the victim's credentials and a changed scope reflecting the cross-boundary reach into another user's credential set. Both vectors flag the attack-requirements / prerequisite (AT:P) condition that a specific, non-default configuration - shared workflows with credential scoping in a multi-user instance - must be in place for exploitation. Integrity impact is limited to the attacker's ability to author workflows that produce effects through the borrowed credentials, and no availability impact is assessed.

DescriptionCVE.org

n8n before 1.123.83 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows shared-workflow editors to use credentials they cannot access by embedding them in nested or tool inline sub-workflows. Attackers can save workflows with Workflow Tool or Workflow Retriever inline definitions referencing restricted credentials, which execute using the workflow owner's credential values.

Technical POC Analysis

CWE-863 (Incorrect Authorization) in the n8n core server package (n8n on npm).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

n8n deployments running versions earlier than 1.123.83 carry an authorization flaw that lets a user holding editor (write) rights on a shared workflow execute restricted credentials owned by a different user by embedding them in nested or tool-inline sub-workflow definitions. The exposure is confined to multi-user instances that combine shared workflows with scoped credential sharing, but where those conditions hold, the credential separation that organisations rely on to contain automation platforms can be silently bypassed. Leadership should care because these credentials typically unlock downstream SaaS, cloud and database systems, so a single editor-level account could reach data and systems well outside its intended scope.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (upgrade to n8n 1.123.83). Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict editor (write) access on shared workflows to trusted personnel, disable or tightly control nested and tool-inline sub-workflow definitions, curtail cross-user credential sharing so that shared workflows cannot reference credentials owned by other users, and monitor for sub-workflow execution using credentials outside the requesting account's scope.
