Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target to be a QFX5K-family device running Junos OS or Junos OS Evolved with EVPN-VXLAN active-active multihoming configured, AND the attacker to be (or control) a device that is already a configured EVPN peer of that target - the memory leak is triggered specifically during active-active multihoming route processing in the l2ald process. Limiting factors: this is not reachable against default or non-EVPN configurations; the attacker cannot be an arbitrary unauthenticated internet host but must hold an established EVPN peering/trust relationship within the fabric, which materially constrains who can exploit it despite the CVSS PR:N rating. Impact is confined to availability (process/device DoS via memory exhaustion); there is no data disclosure or modification. A vendor patch is available, so patched versions listed in EUVD are not exploitable.

Impact

This is a medium-severity, availability-only denial-of-service issue (CWE-401 memory leak / improper release of memory), not a high-priority remote code execution threat. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.9 with impact limited to VA:L - a partial availability hit via memory exhaustion in the l2ald process, with no confidentiality or integrity impact (VC:N/VI:N). Exploitation status: no public exploit identified at time of analysis - the CVE is not in CISA KEV and no POC is referenced. No EPSS score was provided, so statistical exploitation probability cannot be assessed. The most important nuance is a conflict between the CVSS metric and the description: the vector sets PR:N (unauthenticated), but the description requires 'a configured EVPN peer,' meaning the attacker must already occupy a trusted peering relationship that the target operator deliberately configured - a significant real-world barrier that PR:N understates. The 4.0 vector's AU:Y (automatable/user-interaction-adjacent) and V:C (confirmed value) flags and vendor-sourced reporting are consistent with a genuine but gated bug. Net: a real, patch-worthy reliability defect for Juniper QFX5K EVPN-VXLAN fabrics, but closer to a low-to-moderate operational risk than an urgent internet-facing emergency, because exploitation is confined to already-peered EVPN participants.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls or has compromised a device that is already a configured EVPN peer in a QFX5K-family EVPN-VXLAN active-active multihoming fabric advertises specially crafted or repeated multihoming routes. The l2ald process fails to release memory while processing these routes, and sustained advertisement progressively exhausts memory until the process degrades or the device loses EVPN/L2 forwarding function. No public exploit code is known, and the attacker must already hold a valid EVPN peering relationship, so this is not opportunistic remote exploitation.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Memory exhaustion denial of service in Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved running on QFX5K-family platforms allows a device that is already a configured EVPN peer to leak memory in the l2ald process by driving EVPN-VXLAN active-active multihoming route processing, eventually starving the daemon and degrading or knocking over the switch. This is a medium-severity, availability-only issue (CVSS 6.9; assessed CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/C:N/I:N/A:L) with no data disclosure or modification; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though the assessed vector requires the attacker to hold an established EVPN peering relationship within the fabric rather than being an arbitrary internet host. A vendor patch is available, so only unpatched QFX5K devices with EVPN-VXLAN active-active multihoming configured and reachable by a peer are exposed.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to a fixed release - for Junos OS, 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3 or 26.2R1-S2 (and the corresponding 23.4X100, 25.2X100 and 25.4X300 fixed builds), and for Junos OS Evolved, 23.2R2-S7.7-EVO, 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO, 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO, 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO or 26.2R1-S2-EVO, as detailed in JSA112187 (https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA112187). Because exploitation requires an established EVPN peering relationship and active-active multihoming processing on a QFX5K-family device, practical compensating controls until patched are to restrict EVPN peering to explicitly trusted fabric devices by tightening BGP/EVPN peer authentication and MD5/TCP-AO where supported, and to limit who can inject EVPN routes into the VXLAN fabric - trading reduced operational flexibility for a smaller trust surface. Monitoring l2ald memory utilisation (periodic show system processes/l2ald heap checks with automated alerts, plus syslog monitoring for l2ald restarts) can detect the leak early, but does not prevent it; disabling EVPN-VXLAN active-active multihoming on the affected QFX5K platforms removes exposure entirely at the cost of losing multihoming resiliency and requiring a topology redesign. Note that neither peer authentication nor monitoring eliminates the leak for a peer that already holds a valid session, which is why the fixed release remains the primary remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-401 (Improper Release of Memory Before Removing Last Reference), a reference-counted object handling defect in l2ald, the Junos Layer 2 address learning daemon responsible for MAC learning, bridging state and EVPN L2 control-plane processing. When EVPN-VXLAN active-active multihoming routes are processed, a reference is not released correctly and the associated memory is leaked per route or per multihoming event, so repeated route churn steadily grows the l2ald heap until the process is starved and the platform loses forwarding stability. Affected platforms are QFX5K-family switches, with CPE coverage for both juniper_networks:junos_os and juniper_networks:junos_os_evolved, meaning the leak exists in both the classic Junos OS and the Evolved codebase. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) is network-reachable with low availability impact, but the authoritative independent assessment narrows this to CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, reflecting that the remote actor must already be a configured EVPN peer - a trusted, authenticated fabric relationship - and that the leak is only triggered in active-active multihoming route processing, not in default or non-EVPN configurations.
