| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires (1) a valid Inbox-compatible JWT accepted by the server, i.e. the attacker must possess or be issued a token signed with the deployment's JWT secret - in setups where this secret is shared across integrations or tenants this is a low bar, but strict per-tenant secret isolation raises it; and (2) use of the Document Builder API's builder.SaveFile() with its optional third argument to supply user-controlled converter XML containing a duplicate m_sFileTo element. The vulnerability is in default processing of that converter XML (no non-default feature toggle is mentioned), and affects ONLYOFFICE Document Server versions before 10.0.0. Limiting factors: authentication via a valid JWT is mandatory (PR:L), and full command execution is not instantaneous - it requires a subsequent Document Builder job to process the poisoned runtime.json configuration. |
| Impact | This is a genuine, actionable priority rather than a CVSS-inflated non-issue, though it is not an emergency. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) indicates a network-reachable, low-complexity attack requiring only low privileges - specifically a valid Inbox-compatible JWT - with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) but no subsequent-system scope change (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N), consistent with command execution confined to the host as the ds service account. The signals are internally consistent: the description's 'authenticated attacker with a valid JWT' matches PR:L, and the network-delivered Document Builder API call matches AV:N. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The key tempering factors are the authentication requirement (a valid JWT, which in many deployments is a shared secret available to any integrated application or tenant) and the absence of evidence of active exploitation. Net: treat as a high-value patch target - the authentication barrier is modest where JWT secrets are shared, and the outcome is full OS command execution - but there is currently no data indicating mass or targeted exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker holding a valid Inbox-compatible JWT (e.g., a malicious or compromised integrated application, or an attacker who has obtained the shared JWT secret) submits a Document Builder job via the API, passing crafted converter XML in the optional third argument of builder.SaveFile(). A duplicate m_sFileTo element overrides the server-generated output path, letting them overwrite runtime.json to point the Document Builder executable at an attacker-controlled binary or arguments, so the next job runs arbitrary OS commands as the ds account. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Remote code execution in ONLYOFFICE Document Server affects every release before 10.0.0, allowing an attacker who holds a valid Inbox-compatible JWT to run arbitrary OS commands as the ds service account. The flaw lives in the Document Builder API: because the optional third argument of builder.SaveFile() accepts user-controlled converter XML, injecting a duplicate m_sFileTo element overrides the server-generated output path and lets the attacker write outside the designated job directory, overwrite runtime.json, and repoint the Document Builder executable so that commands execute during a subsequent job. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, but the CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 reflects high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact, with exploitation gated on possession of a JWT signed with the deployment's secret (PR:L).
RemediationAI
Upgrade ONLYOFFICE Document Server to 10.0.0 or later, which is the first version outside the vulnerable range, and verify the installed build against the vendor change log at https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/DocumentServer/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, the highest-value compensating control is tightening JWT trust: rotate the deployment's JWT secret, ensure each tenant/integration has a distinct secret, and shorten token lifetimes, since the attack requires a valid Inbox-compatible JWT - the trade-off is that shared-secret integrations and long-lived connectors will break until re-provisioned. Additionally, restrict network access to the Document Builder/conversion endpoints and any exposed API to trusted integration hosts, and run the ds service account with the least privilege possible, mounting runtime.json and the Document Builder binaries from read-only locations or a separate volume so the poisoned-configuration step cannot be completed - this may interfere with legitimate in-place upgrades or self-updating installs. File-integrity monitoring on runtime.json and the Document Builder executable path will detect the overwrite stage of the chain, and egress filtering limits follow-on command activity, though neither prevents the initial path-traversal write. Disabling the Document Builder API entirely closes the vector but removes document conversion and builder functionality for all users, so it is only realistic for deployments that do not use those features.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause is CWE-73 (External Control of File Name or Path): the Document Builder component parses converter XML that is partly attacker-supplied and does not safely constrain the output file path. ONLYOFFICE Document Server's builder.SaveFile() API normally generates the job output location server-side, but its optional third argument carries converter XML, and a duplicated m_sFileTo element in that XML takes precedence, redirecting writes anywhere the ds service account can reach. The practical consequence is a config-poisoning chain rather than an immediate primitive: the attacker overwrites runtime.json, changes the configured Document Builder executable path and its arguments, and only then obtains command execution as the ds account the next time a Document Builder job is processed. Both the vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N) and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H) agree that the attack is network-reachable, requires low privileges (a valid JWT), needs no user interaction, and yields high impact across confidentiality, integrity, and availability; the CPE cpe:2.3:a:onlyoffice:document_server:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* tracks all versions before the 10.0.0 fix.

2DescriptionCVE.org
A remote code execution vulnerability in ONLYOFFICE Document Server versions before10.0.0 allows an authenticated attacker with a valid Inbox-compatible JWT to execute arbitrary operating system commands as the ds service account. The Document Builder API improperly processes user-controlled converter XML supplied through the optional third argument of builder.SaveFile(). By injecting a duplicate m_sFileTo element, an attacker can override the server-generated output path and write arbitrary content outside the designated job directory. This allows the attacker to overwrite the runtime.json configuration file, modify the Document Builder executable path and arguments, and execute arbitrary commands when a subsequent Document Builder job is processed.
Executive ViewAI
ONLYOFFICE Document Server deployments running releases before 10.0.0 face a high-severity remote code execution risk that could let a user with a valid deployment-signed JWT execute commands as the ds service account. Leadership should care because a compromise could expose sensitive documents, disrupt document-processing workflows, and require costly containment and forensic response, even though no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis. Affected teams should prioritize inventory, JWT secret controls, and compensating controls while a vendor patch is unavailable.
No vendor-released patch identified; interim mitigations include disabling Document Builder if unused, rotating and tightly scoping JWT signing secrets, running the ds service account with least privilege, restricting network egress, enabling file integrity monitoring on runtime.json and the Document Builder executable, and reviewing for suspicious SaveFile or converter XML activity.
