Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to control the tmpFolderName value in the file-upload destination path and to supply an unanchored traversal sequence; per the CVSS vector PR:L, a valid low-privileged authenticated account on the Agora Project web application is required (not unauthenticated). The traversal must resolve to a web-accessible directory (e.g. the web root) for the written file to be served and executed, so achieving RCE depends on the uploaded file type being executable in that location (typically a PHP/script-handling web root). Limiting factors: authentication is needed, so instances without open self-registration and with restricted account provisioning reduce exposure; versions 26.10.0 and later are not affected. No special non-default configuration is otherwise indicated - the flaw is in the upload path-handling logic itself.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, though not a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw requiring only low-level authenticated privileges and no user interaction, with full high impact to confidentiality, integrity and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) - consistent with the arbitrary-file-write-to-RCE outcome described. The score of 8.7 is credible. However, the key tempering signals are missing or negative: there is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so exploitation is not confirmed active. EPSS was not provided in the input and cannot be assessed. The main caveat is the PR:L requirement - an attacker needs a valid low-privileged account on the Agora Project instance, which meaningfully limits mass unauthenticated exploitation and shifts the realistic threat toward insiders, credential-abuse scenarios, or internet-exposed instances with open/weak registration. No SSVC decision data was supplied. Net: patch promptly, especially on internet-facing instances, but the absence of KEV/POC and the authentication requirement argue against this being widely weaponized today.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker with a low-privileged authenticated account on an Agora Project instance before 26.10.0 submits a file upload while setting the tmpFolderName value to a path-traversal sequence (e.g. targeting the web root). The traversal causes the uploaded, attacker-controlled file to be written outside the intended temporary directory into a web-accessible location, which is then requested to achieve remote code execution. No public proof-of-concept exploit was identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires valid credentials.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026

Authenticated path traversal in Omnispace Agora Project before 26.10.0 lets a low-privileged user write attacker-controlled files outside the intended upload temporary directory by supplying an unanchored tmpFolderName value in the upload destination path; pointing it at the web root can yield remote code execution if the written file is executable from that location. Per the CVSS vector (PR:L), a valid low-privileged account on the Agora web application is required, so exposure is materially lower on instances with restricted account provisioning or closed self-registration, and versions 26.10.0 and later are unaffected. CVSS 8.7 (v4.0) reflects high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact; no public exploit code or confirmed active exploitation was identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch (26.10.0) is available.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade to Agora Project 26.10.0, the vendor-released patch version referenced by the GitHub release tag https://github.com/xech/agora-project/releases/tag/26.10 and by the vendor advisory https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/omnispace-agora-project-path-traversal-via-tmpfoldername-parameter; the 26.10.0 release notes list 2FA, notification-recipient ordering and large-backup optimization changes but the version itself is the patch boundary, so verify the fix by confirming the upload destination no longer accepts client-supplied traversal in tmpFolderName. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls targeting the two prerequisites: (1) authentication - close open self-registration and tighten account provisioning so that only trusted users hold the low-privileged accounts needed to reach the upload routine, accepting that this only reduces the attacker pool rather than removing the flaw; (2) script execution from the write target - configure PHP so that files in the upload/temporary directories and any web-visible staging folder cannot be interpreted (for example php_admin_flag engine off for those directories, or an Apache/nginx location rule denying .php handling there), which neutralizes the RCE outcome even if traversal still succeeds but will break any legitimate feature that relies on executable content in those paths. Additionally, anchor and canonicalize tmpFolderName server-side to a fixed temporary directory and reject any resolved path that escapes it, and consider WAF rules matching encoded or plain traversal sequences in upload parameters as a stopgap (bypassable via encoding and alternate separators, so not a substitute for patching). No vendor-released patch other than 26.10.0 is identified, and no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic CWE-22 improper-limitation-of-a-pathname-to-a-restricted-directory issue in the file-upload handling logic of the Agora Project web application (an open-source PHP-based collaboration/workspace platform). The application builds an upload destination path that incorporates a client-influenced tmpFolderName parameter, but the value is not anchored or canonicalized before being combined with the base temporary directory, so an attacker can inject traversal sequences (for example ../ repeatedly) and have the resulting path resolve outside the intended temp folder. Because the write primitive is relative to the web server's filesystem and the process typically runs under the web server account, targeting a web-accessible, script-executing directory (the web root, or any directory configured to hand .php files to the interpreter) converts a file-write into remote code execution. The CVSS:4.0 vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N scores 8.7 network-reachable with low complexity, while our independent assessment using CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H aligns on the same prerequisites and impact: network vector, low attack complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, and full confidentiality, integrity and availability impact confined to the vulnerable component. The presence of PR:L in both vectors is the key scoping fact - this is not an unauthenticated issue.

DescriptionCVE.org

Omnispace Agora Project before 26.10.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows attackers to write arbitrary files outside the intended temporary directory by supplying an unanchored tmpFolderName value in the upload destination path. Attackers can exploit this flaw, for example by setting tmpFolderName to a traversal sequence targeting the web root, to write attacker-controlled files and achieve remote code execution.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Omnispace Agora Project deployments older than 26.10.0 expose organizations to a high-severity upload flaw that can let a legitimate low-privileged user turn a routine file upload into code execution on the web server. The greatest concern is for externally reachable instances with open account registration or weak account controls, where a single compromised user could affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability; environments with tightly governed accounts face lower practical risk. Because the vendor has released 26.10.0 and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, this is a manageable but urgent patch-and-exposure issue for security leadership.
