Exploitation Conditions

Requires the attacker to already have local access to the Windows host with the ability to execute an arbitrary (malicious) application as a user - the description states this prerequisite explicitly. Exploitation then targets the ndis.sys kernel driver, which is present by default on all Windows systems, so no special feature or non-default configuration is needed beyond local code-execution capability. Limiting factors: the attacker needs a prior foothold (existing low-privilege execution), which rules out remote-unauthenticated exploitation despite the input vector's AV:N; there is no network-reachable attack surface described.

Impact

This is a Windows NDIS (ndis.sys) kernel-driver memory-safety flaw (CWE-125, out-of-bounds read from a missing buffer-length check) rated 8.8 by the source. The signals conflict sharply and must be flagged: the supplied CVSS vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R (network, unauthenticated, user-interaction), yet the description unambiguously describes a LOCAL elevation-of-privilege requiring the attacker to 'first gain access to the local system with the ability to execute a malicious application' - i.e. local vector with existing low-privilege code execution. CVSS indicates network vector but the description implies local access with prior foothold - verify with vendor; the AV:N/PR:N/UI:R scoring appears mislabeled for what is an EoP, and a description-grounded score is closer to AV:L/PR:L/UI:N (~7.8). On real-world prioritization: no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC are present in the input, so there is no evidence of active or imminent exploitation. Kernel EoP bugs are valuable as the second stage of a chain (post-phishing/post-RCE privilege escalation) and tend to be patched in bulk Patch Tuesday cycles, so treat this as a standard-priority patch-now item for Windows fleets rather than an emergency, absent exploitation signals. Note also the CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read) / 'Buffer Overflow' tag describes a read primitive, which more naturally yields information disclosure than full code execution, adding mild uncertainty to the C:H/I:H/A:H impact triad.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already has the ability to run code as a standard user on a Windows host (e.g. after a phishing-delivered payload or a web exploit) executes a specially crafted application that sends malformed input to ndis.sys, triggering the unchecked buffer copy in kernel memory and escalating to SYSTEM-level privileges. No public exploit code is identified in the provided data, and exploitation requires prior local access, so this is a post-compromise privilege-escalation step rather than an initial-access vector.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026

Elevation of privilege in Windows NDIS (ndis.sys) allows a local authenticated user to run processes in an elevated context by exploiting an out-of-bounds read caused by a missing buffer-length check. The vulnerability affects all Windows systems with the default NDIS driver, requiring the attacker to already have local access and the ability to execute a malicious application. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, and Microsoft has released a security update to address the flaw.

RemediationAI

Apply the security update provided by Microsoft, as referenced in the MSRC advisory (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-105007). Patch availability is confirmed per vendor advisory; the update changes how ndis.sys validates buffer length, eliminating the out-of-bounds read. No specific workaround is documented because NDIS is a core networking driver that cannot be disabled without losing network functionality. As a compensating control, restrict the ability of unprivileged users to execute arbitrary code through application whitelisting or least-privilege policies; however, these measures may impact legitimate operations and do not fully mitigate the risk if an attacker already has a foothold.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in ndis.sys, the kernel-mode driver implementing the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) in Microsoft Windows. CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read) indicates that the driver fails to validate the length of a buffer before copying memory, which can lead to reading data beyond the intended buffer boundaries. This memory-safety flaw can be triggered by a local application, potentially allowing the attacker to leak sensitive information or corrupt memory to achieve privilege escalation. NDIS is a core networking component present by default on all Windows systems, so the attack surface is broad for any user with local code execution. The missing length check is the root cause, and the security update changes how ndis.sys validates buffer length to prevent the out-of-bounds access.

DescriptionCVE.org

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) when ndis.sys fails to check the length of a buffer prior to copying memory to it. To exploit the vulnerability, in a local attack scenario, an attacker could run a specially crafted application to elevate the attacker's privilege level. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run processes in an elevated context. However, an attacker must first gain access to the local system with the ability to execute a malicious application in order to exploit this vulnerability. The security update addresses the vulnerability by changing how ndis.sys validates buffer length.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A missing buffer-length check in Windows' default NDIS network driver (ndis.sys) enables a locally positioned attacker to execute code in an elevated context, placing effectively every Windows server and endpoint in the estate within scope. The attack chain requires an attacker to already hold local access and the ability to run a malicious application, which makes this a post-compromise escalation risk rather than a remote entry point, though successful abuse would convert a limited foothold into full control of the host. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and no vendor-released patch has been identified, so leadership should treat this as a near-term hardening and detection priority across the Windows fleet.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include restricting local interactive and RDP logon to trusted users, minimizing local administrative privileges, enforcing application allowlisting (WDAC/AppLocker), monitoring EDR telemetry for anomalous ndis.sys activity and unexpected privilege transitions, and segmenting high-value assets pending an available fix.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
