Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to open an attacker-supplied, specially crafted Excel file in a vulnerable build of Microsoft Office (per CVSS UI:R); it is not triggered against a default idle installation. No authentication is required (PR:N), and delivery is over a network (AV:N) via phishing email, shared document, or web download. The key limiting factor is this mandatory user interaction - a human must choose to open the file - which, combined with CISA's 'Automatable: no' assessment, prevents mass/wormable exploitation. Impact is limited to memory disclosure (C:H only); there is no integrity or availability impact and no code execution. Affected builds include Microsoft Office LTSC 2021 before 16.0.14334.20974, Office LTSC 2024 before 16.0.17932.21056, and Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (see vendor security-release page for the fixed build).

Impact

This is a moderate-severity (CVSS 6.5) information-disclosure flaw whose real-world priority is low-to-moderate. The signals are consistent with each other rather than conflicting: the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) describes a network-delivered, unauthenticated, low-complexity attack that nonetheless requires user interaction, and this aligns with CISA's SSVC decision (Exploitation: none, Automatable: no, Technical Impact: partial). The UI:R requirement is precisely why 'Automatable: no' holds - a human must open a crafted file, so this cannot be driven by a scanning worm. There is no public exploit identified and the CVE is not on CISA KEV, so no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Impact is confined to confidentiality (C:H, I:N, A:N): an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) leaks memory contents but cannot modify data or crash the host, limiting it to information leakage rather than code execution. Net: a real but non-urgent issue - patch in normal cycle. The only minor tension worth verifying is that C:H combined with a mere out-of-bounds read may overstate the practical disclosure value, since leaked bytes are often adjacent heap/stack memory of uncertain sensitivity rather than guaranteed secrets.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious Excel spreadsheet and delivers it via email or a web download. When a victim opens the file in a vulnerable version of Excel, an out-of-bounds read is triggered and the contents of adjacent process memory are disclosed back to the attacker. No public proof-of-concept or exploit code has been identified, and exploitation requires the user to open the file (UI:R).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Memory disclosure in Microsoft Excel (CVE-2026-88190), where an out-of-bounds read while parsing a crafted workbook leaks process memory to a remote, unauthenticated attacker - but only if the victim opens the attacker-supplied file, making user interaction the decisive control point. Affected builds are Microsoft Office LTSC 2021 before 16.0.14334.20974, Office LTSC 2024 before 16.0.17932.21056, and Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise (fixed build listed on the vendor's Office security-release page). Rated 6.5 with confidentiality-only impact and no integrity or availability effect, delivery is network-based (phishing attachment, shared document, or web download); no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis, and CISA's SSVC assessment rates the flaw non-automatable (Exploitation: none, Automatable: no), consistent with the mandatory user-interaction requirement and the absence of a code-execution primitive.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Microsoft has published fixes for this issue, and the remediated builds per the EUVD version ranges are Microsoft Office LTSC 2021 16.0.14334.20974 and Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 16.0.17932.21056, with the corresponding Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise build listed on the vendor release page https://aka.ms/OfficeSecurityReleases; apply the update through Microsoft Update, Windows Update, or your Office update channel, and refer to the MSRC advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-88190 for the per-product package list. Because exploitation requires the victim to open a crafted file (UI:R) and no public exploit has been identified, the practical interim controls are those that interrupt file delivery or opening: enforce Microsoft Defender for Office 365 attachment scanning and detach/quarantine untrusted Office attachments at the mail gateway (reduces exposure but adds latency and false-positive handling), configure Excel Protected View to remain enabled for files originating from the internet and for Outlook attachments (blocks the parsing path, but users can click 'Enable Editing' and the setting adds a prompt to legitimate workflows - do not disable Protected View as a 'fix'), and restrict download-and-open of untrusted spreadsheets via web/UNC paths through browser and endpoint policy. Macro-blocking, ASR rules, or disabling ActiveX/DDE do not address this flaw, because the out-of-bounds read occurs during document parsing before active content is evaluated, so those controls should not be treated as effective mitigations for CVE-2026-88190. There is no configuration toggle that removes the vulnerable parser; upgrading to the fixed builds above is the only complete remediation, and for frozen/air-gapped images the compensating control is side-by-side deployment of a patched Office build or isolation of document conversion/rendering to a non-Office service, both of which carry operational and compatibility costs.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read): Microsoft Excel fails to properly bound a memory access while processing a malformed spreadsheet, so data beyond the intended buffer is read and returned to the caller instead of being rejected. In practice this occurs in Excel's binary/records parsing path (the OLE compound-document and Office Open XML ingestion code that runs before macros or active content is evaluated), which is why the result is information disclosure rather than memory corruption - there is no write primitive, no control-flow hijack, and no code execution, so the CVSS impact is confidentiality-high only (C:H/I:N/A:N). The vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U confirms remote file delivery with low attack complexity and no authentication, gated entirely by a user opening the file; the tags applied by the reporting feed ('Buffer Overflow', 'Information Disclosure') characterize the same memory-safety class that Microsoft maps to CWE-125 for this issue. No CPE strings were supplied in the available intelligence, so affected platforms must be scoped from the vendor advisory and the EUVD version ranges rather than from CPE enumeration.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
