Impact

The CVSS 7.5 score reflects High severity with critical real-world impact despite requiring admin interaction (UI:R). The CVSS vector breakdown shows Network accessibility (AV:N), High complexity requirement (AC:H), no privilege requirement (PR:N), and significant impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H). However, the AC:H and UI:R factors moderate the immediate exploitability—this is not a trivial attack requiring only network access. The vulnerability likely has moderate EPSS probability due to requiring admin interaction, making it a medium-priority issue from a pure automation perspective. Real-world risk is substantial for WordPress installations using this plugin, as the attack chain (social engineering admin to delete entries, attacker controls which files get deleted) is plausible. This represents a legitimate priority for organizations running Everest Forms, but automated exploitation is unlikely without compromising administrator accounts first.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker identifies a target WordPress site running Everest Forms version 1.9.3 or earlier. The attacker crafts a specially formatted form entry deletion request containing a path traversal payload (e.g., file path parameter set to '../../../wp-config.php'). The attacker then contacts a site administrator through email or social engineering, requesting they delete a 'spam' or 'test' form entry while providing the malicious entry ID. When the administrator navigates to delete the entry through the WordPress admin panel, the backend delete_entry_files() function executes without validating the file path, deleting wp-config.php. The WordPress site becomes non-functional, and if the attacker can control file uploads afterward, they could recreate wp-config.php with modified database credentials or inject backdoors. Alternatively, an attacker with lower privileges (subscriber/contributor) could potentially craft entries designed to delete other plugin files or theme files during administrative cleanup operations. No public proof-of-concept is assumed unless explicitly disclosed post-advisory, but the straightforward nature of path traversal exploits makes rapid POC development likely after disclosure.

AnalysisAIv1 – Mar 15, 2026

The Everest Forms (Pro) WordPress plugin versions up to 1.9.4 contain an arbitrary file deletion vulnerability in the delete_entry_files() function due to insufficient path validation (CWE-36). Unauthenticated attackers can delete arbitrary files on the server by tricking an administrator into deleting a form entry, potentially leading to remote code execution through deletion of critical files like wp-config.php. This is a high-severity vulnerability (CVSS 7.5) that requires social engineering or admin interaction but can completely compromise WordPress installations.

RemediationAI

Users should immediately update Everest Forms to a version greater than 1.9.4 once available from the plugin vendor (WP Everest). The patch should include proper file path validation and sanitization in the delete_entry_files() function. Interim workarounds prior to patch availability include: (1) Restrict file deletion permissions by disabling entry deletion features if not critical to operations, (2) Implement WordPress user role restrictions to limit which administrators can delete form entries, (3) Apply Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to detect path traversal patterns in form entry deletion requests, (4) Monitor file system access logs for unexpected deletions of critical files. Recommendation: Update to patched version 1.9.5 or later as soon as released; verify patch availability on the official Everest Forms repository or vendor advisory page.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability exists in the Everest Forms plugin for WordPress, affecting the form entry deletion functionality. The root cause is CWE-36 (Absolute Path Traversal), which allows attackers to manipulate file paths without proper validation. The delete_entry_files() function fails to sanitize or validate file paths before deletion, enabling path traversal attacks. This is a classic file operation security flaw common in web applications that handle file management without strict input validation. The WordPress plugin architecture makes this particularly dangerous as plugins operate with WordPress core privileges, and deletion of wp-config.php would immediately disable the entire WordPress installation.

DescriptionCVE.org

The Everest Forms (Pro) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file deletion due to insufficient file path validation in the delete_entry_files() function in all versions up to, and including, 1.9.4. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to delete arbitrary files on the server, which can easily lead to remote code execution when the right file is deleted (such as wp-config.php). The vulnerability requires an admin to trigger the deletion via deletion of a form entry and cannot be carried out by the attacker alone.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Everest Forms Pro plugin contains a critical file deletion vulnerability that could enable attackers to destroy website files or achieve remote code execution if an administrator performs routine entry deletion tasks. Organizations using this plugin face potential data loss, service disruption, and system compromise until a patch is released.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Disable the Everest Forms Pro plugin entirely until patched, or restrict its use to authenticated administrators on isolated networks only; implement Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block POST requests to the vulnerable delete_entry_files() function; enable file integrity monitoring (FIM) on wp-config.php and other critical WordPress files; restrict file system write permissions; implement network segmentation to limit admin access; maintain current backups of wp-config.php and core WordPress files outside the web root.
