Exploitation Conditions

Two concrete paths, both confirmed by the advisory. (1) Session-credential exposure: a signed-in Rancher user opens a UI provisioning view that looks up cloud data through the meta proxy - explicitly the Amazon EC2, DigitalOcean, Linode, or phoenixNAP provisioning forms, or a UI extension using a credential signer; default configurations are affected the moment such a form is opened, with no non-default feature required and no attacker action against Rancher. (2) API-token exposure: a non-browser client authenticates with a Rancher API token and calls the meta proxy without supplying the proxy's credential-selection headers (the Rancher UI itself does not do this). The key limiting factor is destination scope: a forwarded request only reaches hosts on the installation's allow-list - the whitelist-domain setting, cluster/node driver domains, and (Rancher 2.14+) ProxyEndpoint resources - which by default is forums.rancher.com plus built-in cloud providers' public API endpoints, so meaningful adversarial capture generally requires the attacker to operate, observe, or sit as a TLS-terminating intermediary in front of one of those allow-listed hosts (risk grows with custom drivers/ProxyEndpoints). Exposure window is extended by long-lived API tokens.

Impact

This is a genuine high-priority issue, consistent with its 9.1 CVSS score, the vuln.today 'act_now' decision label, and SUSE's own GHSA advisory. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:N) captures the worst-case severity well: a live Rancher credential - potentially an administrative session cookie or a long-lived API token carrying control-plane and downstream-cluster permissions - leaks to a third-party host during ordinary operation, with no attacker action required against Rancher itself. The critical nuance the raw vector omits is the exploitation model: this is a passive credential-disclosure flaw (CWE-200/201), not a classic remote-attacker exploit. The credential leaves the installation on its own whenever a signed-in user opens an affected provisioning form, and is received by whoever operates or observes an allow-listed destination host (and any TLS-terminating intermediary in front of it). By default that destination set is forums.rancher.com and the built-in cloud providers' public API endpoints, so in the default case the receiving party is a legitimate cloud provider rather than a hostile actor - real risk rises sharply where administrators have added custom cluster/node drivers or (in 2.14+) ProxyEndpoint resources pointing at attacker-controllable or lower-trust hosts. No EPSS score and no KEV status are provided in the input, and no PoC reference is listed; absence of those signals does not lower the priority here because the 'act_now' label and silent-exposure-during-normal-use nature mean credentials may already have been forwarded even without any adversary targeting the instance.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An administrator configures a custom node driver (or ProxyEndpoint) whose whitelisted host is operated or observed by an attacker. A signed-in Rancher user then opens a cloud provisioning form that performs a credential-backed lookup; the meta proxy forwards the request to that host without stripping the user's Rancher session cookie or API token, and the attacker reads the live credential from the host's request logs and replays it for administrative access to the Rancher control plane and managed clusters. No public exploit was identified in the input at time of analysis; exploitation requires no attacker activity against Rancher and no non-default feature, only a receiving host the attacker can see.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026

Credential leakage in the SUSE Rancher Manager meta proxy causes the caller's own Rancher credentials - either the browser session cookie of a signed-in user or a Rancher API token - to be forwarded to third-party cloud provider hosts when the proxy relays a request. Any party that operates or can observe the receiving allow-listed host, including its request logs or a TLS-terminating intermediary in front of it, obtains a live Rancher credential that may carry administrative control over the Rancher Manager control plane and its managed clusters; long-lived API tokens extend the exposure window. Affected are Rancher 2.15.0 through 2.15.2, 2.14.0 through 2.14.6, 2.13.0 through 2.13.10, 2.12.0 through 2.12.14 and 2.11.0 through 2.11.18, and default installations are exposed as soon as a user opens an affected provisioning form; no public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the vuln.today decision label is act_now with a 9.1 CVSS score.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to a patched release on the matching branch: Rancher 2.15.3, 2.14.7, 2.13.11, 2.12.15 or 2.11.19, per the vendor advisory at https://github.com/rancher/rancher/security/advisories/GHSA-x82x-2qj6-5rm2. Because the leak is silent and occurs during normal operation, SUSE advises treating credentials that may have been forwarded as potentially compromised after upgrading: rotate or delete long-lived Rancher API tokens used against the meta proxy and invalidate existing user sessions so affected users sign in again. The vendor states there is no complete workaround other than upgrading, but exposure can be reduced until then by trimming the hosts the proxy may contact - entries in the whitelist-domain setting, the whitelist domains of custom cluster and node drivers, and (2.14+) custom ProxyEndpoint resources, noting that built-in driver hosts are restored at startup and cannot be removed this way; by creating cloud credentials, node templates and machine configurations through the API or kubectl instead of the EC2, DigitalOcean, Linode and phoenixNAP provisioning forms that perform proxy-backed lookups; by ensuring API clients set X-API-Auth-Header whenever they call the meta proxy with a Rancher API token; and by lowering auth-user-session-ttl-minutes and auth-token-max-ttl-minutes and avoiding long-lived administrative API tokens in workflows that reach the proxy, each of which only shortens the validity window rather than preventing the disclosure.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The meta proxy is the Rancher Manager component the UI uses to query cloud provider APIs on a user's behalf - for example to list regions, sizes or images while provisioning clusters or nodes with a cloud credential. Implemented in the Go module github.com/rancher/rancher, the proxy forwarded inbound request headers to the upstream third-party host without consistently stripping the caller's own Rancher authentication material, which is CWE-201 (Insertion of Sensitive Information Into Sent Data) and is also tracked as CWE-200. The Authorization and Cookie headers were copied from the inbound request onto the outbound request, and cookie replacement ran after authentication handling, so credential-selection paths could carry the session cookie or API token downstream. The fix stops copying Authorization and Cookie to the outgoing request, lets the paths that legitimately need an outbound Authorization header (the explicit auth header and the cloud credential signers) set it themselves, and moves cookie replacement ahead of any authentication handling so it applies on every path including signer paths; clients that previously relied on their own Authorization header being passed through must now use X-API-Auth-Header. Destination scope is bounded by the installation's allow-list: the whitelist-domain setting, the domains declared by cluster and node drivers, and, from Rancher 2.14 onward, ProxyEndpoint resources - by default forums.rancher.com plus the built-in cloud providers' public API endpoints, growing with every custom driver or proxy endpoint an administrator adds.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical credential-leakage vulnerability in SUSE Rancher Manager (CVE-2026-88811) exposes Rancher session cookies and API tokens to third-party cloud provider hosts during normal provisioning workflows. Any user who opens an affected provisioning form can inadvertently transmit live credentials-potentially administrative-to external parties, risking full compromise of the Rancher control plane and all managed clusters. Leadership should prioritize immediate remediation because default installations are exposed upon routine use, and long-lived API tokens significantly extend the window of unauthorized access.

Business Impact: Severe
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations include disabling or restricting access to affected provisioning forms, blocking meta proxy egress to third-party cloud hosts until validation, rotating all Rancher API tokens, enforcing short token lifetimes, and monitoring proxy logs for credential leakage.
