MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Collection The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the victim to open a specially crafted PowerPoint file in an affected Office build (Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise, Office LTSC 2024/2021, and the macOS 2024/2021/365 editions listed in EUVD). The limiting factor is mandatory user interaction (UI:R) - there is no server-side or automatic trigger; the attacker cannot exploit a default idle installation without someone opening the malicious document. Impact is bounded to information disclosure (C:H, with I:N/A:N): the out-of-bounds read can leak process memory but does not itself grant code execution or modify data. No special non-default configuration is required beyond having a vulnerable Office version installed. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity information-disclosure flaw that signals are consistent in rating as NOT a top priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, base 6.5) shows a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated issue, but the C:H/I:N/A:N impact profile confines it to confidentiality (memory disclosure) with no integrity or availability effect, and crucially requires user interaction (UI:R) - the victim must open a malicious file. CISA's SSVC framework reinforces a low-urgency picture: Exploitation=none (no observed exploitation), Automatable=no (UI:R breaks mass/automated exploitation), and Technical Impact=partial. KEV status is not present, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' EPSS and POC data were not supplied in the input and cannot be asserted either way. The one tension to flag: the vector is AV:N despite the attack being a file-parsing bug that realistically depends on email/web delivery plus a user opening the document - Microsoft conventionally scores document-handling bugs as AV:N, so treat 'network' as 'malicious file delivered over a network' rather than a remote drive-by. Net: a real but not emergency-grade issue; patch on a normal cycle. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker emails or hosts a crafted PowerPoint file and lures a user into opening it; the malformed structure triggers an out-of-bounds read in the parser, leaking adjacent process memory (e.g., heap contents that could include pointers or residual sensitive data) back to attacker-controllable output. No public proof-of-concept is identified at time of analysis, and the UI:R requirement means the victim must actively open the file, so exploitation is targeted rather than automated. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
An out-of-bounds read in Microsoft PowerPoint lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker disclose process memory by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted presentation file. Affected builds include Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise and Office LTSC 2024/2021 on Windows, along with the Office LTSC for Mac 2024/2021 and Office 365 for Mac editions; the flaw is scored 6.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) and requires user interaction, so there is no server-side or automatic trigger. Impact is bounded to confidentiality (C:H, I:N, A:N) - the read does not by itself yield code execution or data modification - and there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, with SSVC recording Exploitation: none and no CISA KEV listing.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Microsoft Office LTSC 2024 16.0.17932.21056 and Microsoft Office LTSC 2021 16.0.14334.20974 (or later), with Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise and the Mac editions fixed through their normal update channels - apply the current security release listed at https://aka.ms/OfficeSecurityReleases and confirm against https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-88183. For Mac systems where EUVD shows only '<publication>' as the fixed build, use Microsoft AutoUpdate and verify the installed build against the advisory before assuming remediation. Because exploitation requires a victim to open a malicious presentation, useful interim compensating controls are: strip or quarantine .ppt/.pptx/.ppsx/.pptm attachments and links at the email and web gateways (trade-off: blocks legitimate business documents and requires an exception workflow), enforce Mark of the Web and keep Protected View enabled for files from the internet so documents open in a sandboxed read-only view (trade-off: users must click 'Enable Editing' for trusted files), and block Office from following external content or resolving remote references for untrusted documents. Disabling PowerPoint preview handlers in Explorer and Outlook reduces exposure to malformed previews of untrusted files (trade-off: slower file triage for users). None of these eliminate the flaw - they only reduce the chance an attacker gets a crafted file opened in an unpatched build, so patching remains the primary fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The root cause class is CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read), a memory-safety defect in how PowerPoint parses a crafted presentation file: the application trusts a length or offset value from the document and reads past the end of an allocated buffer, returning adjacent process memory to the attacker through the disclosed output. Unlike an out-of-bounds write, this primitive provides no control-flow or data-integrity impact, which is consistent with the assessed vector's C:H/I:N/A:N profile. The MSRC tagging pairs it with a generic 'Buffer Overflow' label, but the authoritative CWE and the independent assessment both constrain the effect to information disclosure rather than memory corruption leading to code execution. Affected code lives in the shared Office rendering/parsing stack, which is why the affected set spans the Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise service channel plus the perpetual Office LTSC 2024 and 2021 releases on Windows and the corresponding macOS builds enumerated in EUVD-2026-100183 (Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise 16.0.1, Office LTSC 2024 <16.0.17932.21056, Office LTSC 2021 <16.0.14334.20974, and the Mac 2024/2021/365 editions). Exploitation is gated by UI:R - the attacker must deliver a malicious document that a user opens in a vulnerable build, and no non-default configuration is needed beyond having an unpatched Office installed.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
