1 technique across 1 tactic: Collection

The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to open or preview attacker-supplied content rendered by the Windows GDI subsystem (such as a crafted image, embedded font, or metafile/document) - this is the UI:R requirement and is the primary limiting factor. The attacker is remote and unauthenticated (PR:N, AV:N), and no non-default configuration is needed: default installations of all listed Windows and Windows Server editions are affected. The flaw yields only information disclosure (I:N/A:N), so it cannot alter data or crash the host on its own; realistic risk depends on social-engineering a user into opening the content and on the sensitivity of whatever memory happens to sit adjacent to the over-read.

Impact

This is a moderate, not top-tier, priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N, score 6.5) describes a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated information-disclosure flaw, but exploitation requires user interaction (UI:R) and the impact is confidentiality-only (I:N/A:N). All exploitation signals point low and are mutually consistent: CISA's SSVC decision framework reports Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, and Technical Impact=partial, the CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is indicated in the provided data - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The SSVC 'Automatable: no' aligns with the UI:R requirement, since the attack cannot be mass-automated without a victim opening attacker content. The one point of mild tension is CVSS C:H (high confidentiality impact) versus SSVC Technical Impact 'partial'; out-of-bounds reads in GDI typically leak bounded adjacent memory rather than guaranteeing disclosure of specific secrets, so the real-world confidentiality impact may sit below the C:H rating - treat C:H as an upper bound. Net assessment: a patch-on-normal-cycle vulnerability, useful mainly as an ASLR/info-leak primitive chained with a separate code-execution bug, rather than a standalone emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a malicious image, font, or document (metafile) and delivers it via email attachment, chat, or a web page. When the victim opens or previews the content, Windows GDI performs an out-of-bounds read while parsing it, and adjacent process memory is disclosed back to the attacker - potentially leaking pointers useful for defeating ASLR. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and the UI:R requirement means a user must actively open the content.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

An out-of-bounds read in the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) subsystem can leak memory contents to a remote, unauthenticated attacker, but only after the victim opens or previews attacker-supplied content such as a crafted image, embedded font, or metafile (CVSS 3.1: 6.5, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N). Every supported client and server edition is affected in default configurations, spanning Windows 10 (1607, 1809, 21H2, 22H2), Windows 11 (23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1, 26H2) and Windows Server 2012 through 2025, including Server Core installations. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and CISA's SSVC assessment records exploitation as 'none' with automatable 'no', so this is a moderate-priority information-disclosure issue whose practical risk hinges on social-engineering a user into rendering the malicious file; note that the flaw yields disclosure only (I:N/A:N) and cannot by itself corrupt data or crash the host, and a vendor patch is available.

RemediationAI

Patch available per vendor advisory: Microsoft has published a fix for CVE-2026-83651 through the MSRC Update Guide (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-83651) and the corresponding NVD record (https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-83651); apply the current cumulative update so each host reaches or exceeds the EUVD-listed fixed builds referenced in the affected-products field (for example 10.0.14393.9612 for Windows 10 1607/Server 2016, 10.0.17763.9376 for Windows 10 1809/Server 2019, 10.0.19044.7807 for Windows 10 21H2/22H2, 10.0.22631.7652 for Windows 11 23H2, 10.0.26100.9711 for Windows 11 24H2, 10.0.26200.9711 for 25H2, 10.0.20348.5761 for Server 2022 and 10.0.26100.33650 for Server 2025). Prioritise systems that routinely render untrusted graphics - email gateways with attachment preview, document/thumbnail preview services, terminal servers and shared workstations - since exploitation requires a user to open or preview the crafted content (UI:R) and cannot be triggered without that interaction. Where patching must be deferred, the effective compensating controls target the rendering path rather than the network: disable Explorer thumbnail and preview handlers for untrusted locations and for formats such as EMF/WMF (trade-off: loss of thumbnail previews and slower file triage for users), remove or block GDI-based image/metafile handlers in applications that process untrusted input (trade-off: legitimate graphics and legacy document rendering may fail), and enforce mail/web content filtering plus Mark-of-the-Web/Attachment Manager prompts to reduce the likelihood of a user rendering attacker-supplied files (trade-off: occasional false positives and added user friction). Because the flaw is a read-only disclosure with no integrity or availability impact, blocking network ports is not a meaningful mitigation; the exposure is the file content itself, so user-awareness messaging about opening unexpected image, font or document attachments remains a useful secondary control. No exploitation has been observed per the SSVC assessment (Exploitation: none, Automatable: no), so emergency out-of-band action is not required and the fix can be folded into the normal monthly patch cycle.

Technical ContextAI · show details

GDI (GDI32/gdiplus) is the legacy Windows rendering stack responsible for drawing bitmaps, fonts, metafiles (WMF/EMF) and print output, and it is reachable from virtually every application that displays an image or document preview, including the shell's thumbnail/preview handlers, Office, browsers and image viewers. The vulnerability is classified CWE-125 (Out-of-bounds Read): a length, offset or index field embedded in the parsed graphical object is not adequately validated against the actual buffer size, so the rendering code reads past the end of an allocated buffer. Because the mis-read bytes can be copied into the rendered output or otherwise observed by the attacker-controlled file (or by subsequent parsing behaviour), the defect converts into a memory-disclosure primitive rather than memory corruption - there is no write and no control-flow hijack, which is why the impact is confidentiality-only (C:H, I:N, A:N) and the SSVC 'Technical Impact: partial' rating applies. Attack surface is network-facing (AV:N) and requires no privileges (PR:N) but does require user interaction (UI:R), since the crafted object must be rendered by a GDI consumer on the victim host; the EUVD version set confirms the issue spans the shared GDI binaries shipped across the Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2012-2025 servicing branches, all of which contain the same vulnerable code path.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
