V6 - Authentication Timing attack prevention

| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that an operator has enabled user/basic authentication on openstack-network-exporter WHILE omitting or misconfiguring TLS - this exact non-default, inconsistent configuration triggers the silent fail-open bypass. The attacker must also hold an adjacent network position (same L2 segment or reachable management/dataplane network) to the exporter endpoint. Limiting factors: default or TLS-correct deployments are not affected, no exploitation is possible if authentication is not configured in this broken combination, and the attacker gains read-only metric visibility only (no integrity or availability impact). This is a configuration-dependent, adjacency-limited disclosure rather than a remote-from-anywhere unauthenticated flaw. |
| Impact | This is a conditional, misconfiguration-dependent information-disclosure flaw whose real-world risk is moderate and narrower than the 7.4 CVSS might suggest. The input CVSS vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N) conflicts with the description in two ways that must be verified: the description explicitly states an 'adjacent network attacker,' which is AV:A, not the AV:N in the vector; and the described impact is purely read-only metric disclosure (enumerate bridge names, port counters, OVN state, topology), which does not support the I:H (integrity) rating in the vendor vector - only confidentiality is clearly affected. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public POC were provided, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active or automatable exploitation. The AC:H rating is appropriate because exploitation is gated on a specific operator mistake (authentication enabled while TLS is omitted/misconfigured), making this a priority only for environments confirmed to run that exact fail-open configuration rather than a broad, default-exposure emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An operator deploys openstack-network-exporter with basic authentication enabled but without (or with broken) TLS. Because authentication silently fails open under this condition, an attacker positioned on the same L2 segment or adjacent management network simply queries the metrics endpoint and receives OVS/OVN dataplane telemetry without any credentials. No public POC is referenced; the 'exploit' is effectively an unauthenticated HTTP(S) scrape against the misconfigured exporter. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
openstack-network-exporter can be made to silently skip basic authentication when an operator enables user authentication but forgets or misconfigures TLS, letting an adjacent-network attacker pull OVS/OVN dataplane metrics without credentials. Only deployments in that specific non-default, inconsistent configuration are exposed; correct TLS deployments and deployments without authentication enabled are unaffected. The published CVSS is 7.4 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), but our assessment narrows this to AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N - adjacency-limited, read-only information disclosure, with no integrity or availability impact and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch version was identified in the available advisory data at time of analysis; monitor https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-83535 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2526402 for the fixed openstack-network-exporter build (typically delivered through an RHOSP 18.0 erratum) and apply it once published. The most direct mitigation is configuration-level: either configure TLS correctly end-to-end so the auth path is actually enforced, or, if TLS cannot be deployed, do not enable user authentication alone under the assumption it is protecting the endpoint - instead treat the exporter as unauthenticated and defend it purely at the network layer. Because exploitation requires an adjacent network position, restrict reachability of the exporter's metrics endpoint with host firewall rules, security groups, network ACLs, or Kubernetes NetworkPolicy so that only the monitoring/prometheus scraper subnet can connect; the trade-off is that a broader scrape range or ad-hoc debugging access will break. Bind the exporter to a management interface or localhost and front it with a TLS-terminating reverse proxy that enforces HTTP basic auth, noting that this adds an operational dependency and only helps if all direct paths to the exporter port are closed. Rotate the basic-auth credentials after fixing, since any credentials presented over the misconfigured plaintext channel should be considered exposed. Verify remediation by confirming that an unauthenticated request to the metrics endpoint over the network path returns 401 rather than metric data.

Technical ContextAI · show details
openstack-network-exporter is a Prometheus-style metrics exporter that scrapes Open vSwitch and Open Virtual Network dataplane state and exposes it for monitoring; the exposed data includes bridge names, port counters, OVN controller state, and host topology. The flaw is a fail-open authentication design: the component supports a basic-auth mode, but authentication enforcement is effectively coupled to the TLS code path, so when TLS is absent or misconfigured the credential check is skipped rather than failing closed. Red Hat assigns CWE-208 (Observable Timing Discrepancy) as the root-cause class, though the described behavior is functionally closer to a missing-TLS-enforcement/fail-open access-control weakness (cf. CWE-287/CWE-311); regardless of classification, the security property violated is that authentication must never be silently downgraded to anonymous access. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:red_hat:red_hat_openstack_platform_18.0 confirms Red Hat OpenStack Platform 18.0 as the packaged, commercially supported distribution channel, with the upstream openstack-network-exporter project as the origin of the code.

DescriptionCVE.org
A flaw was found in openstack-network-exporter. When an operator configures user authentication but omits or misconfigures Transport Layer Security (TLS), the basic authentication mechanism is silently bypassed. This fail-open design allows an adjacent network attacker to access sensitive Open vSwitch (OVS) and Open Virtual Network (OVN) dataplane metrics without credentials. Consequently, an attacker can enumerate bridge names, port counters, OVN controller state, and host topology, leading to information disclosure.
Executive ViewAI
A flaw in openstack-network-exporter can cause basic authentication to be silently bypassed in OpenStack/OVN environments where operators have enabled user authentication but not correctly configured TLS, allowing an attacker positioned on an adjacent network segment to read dataplane metrics without credentials. Only deployments in that specific non-default, inconsistent configuration are exposed; correctly configured TLS deployments and unauthenticated-only deployments are not affected. Leadership should care because the exposure is limited to credential-less read access to network telemetry from a neighboring network position, with no ability to alter or disrupt services.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: ensure TLS is correctly configured and enforced wherever user authentication is enabled (the only affected combination), bind the exporter's metrics endpoint to localhost or an internal management interface, restrict adjacency via firewall/security-group rules so untrusted hosts cannot reach the endpoint, front the exporter with an authenticated reverse proxy or mutual-TLS gateway, and monitor for unexpected unauthenticated metric-scrape requests until a patch is available.
