Network-delivered via message ingestion with no authentication required, but high complexity and required user interaction (agent must process the crafted message); credential store overwrite yields high C and I with no availability impact.

3DescriptionCVE.org
Hermes Agent 0.16.0 prior to 0.17.0 contains an improper path restriction vulnerability that allows attackers who can influence ingested message content to overwrite the credential store by bypassing sensitive-path guards that excluded the auth.json file. Attackers can craft malicious messages directing the agent's file-write tooling to overwrite the credential store without triggering any path-based protection, enabling credential tampering or unauthorized access.
AnalysisAI
Credential store overwrite in NousResearch Hermes Agent versions 0.16.0 through pre-0.17.0 is achievable by any attacker who can inject content into messages ingested by the agent, exploiting a gap in the sensitive-path guard (CWE-552) that failed to properly exclude auth.json from the file-write tool's reachable paths. By crafting malicious message payloads, an attacker bypasses the path restriction and overwrites the credential store without triggering any protection, resulting in credential tampering and potential unauthorized access to all identities stored therein. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires two concrete prerequisites: (1) the attacker must be able to inject or control content within messages ingested by the target Hermes Agent instance - viable attack surfaces include any platform integration the agent is configured to accept, such as Raft agent network messages, iMessage via the Photon plugin, or other external channel adapters; and (2) the agent must process (passively consume) the malicious message (UI:P in CVSS 4.0), meaning the attack is not fire-and-forget but depends on agent activity. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | The CVSS 4.0 score of 7.6 is driven by network accessibility (AV:N) and high confidentiality and integrity impact (VC:H/VI:H), tempered by high attack complexity (AC:H) and passive user interaction (UI:P). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
