DescriptionCVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net/sched: sch_fq_codel: Do not call qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog during peek before restoring qlen

Whenever fq_codel drops packets during peek, it calls qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog. An issue arises because it calls qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog before it reincrements the qlen. If qlen drops to zero, but peek returns an skb, the parent's qlen_notify callback will be executed even though fq_codel still has 1 packet on the queue and, thus, will mistakenly deactivate the parent's class causing issues like a recent report [1] and a wild memory access in qfq:

Fix this by only calling qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog in peek after the qlen is restored.

AnalysisAI

Memory corruption in the Linux kernel's net/sched fq_codel queueing discipline lets a local actor with traffic-control privileges trigger a wild kernel memory access and crash. When fq_codel drops packets during a peek operation, it calls qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog before restoring qlen; if qlen momentarily hits zero while peek still holds an skb, the parent class (e.g. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires local access plus CAP_NET_ADMIN to configure the qdisc tree - obtainable directly by root/network admins, or by an unprivileged local user when unprivileged user namespaces are enabled (common default on many desktop/container distros). … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The signals conflict sharply and must be reconciled before prioritization. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Vendor-released patch: update to a fixed stable release for your branch - 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 (or later 7.2), per the EUVD patch list - or apply the corresponding kernel.org stable commit that moves the qdisc_tree_reduce_backlog() call to after qlen is restored in fq_codel's peek path. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
