MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated account holding the specific 'services' permission with access to the device's terminal or CLI interface; the payload is delivered through the 'set nfs download' command's unsanitized parameter, which flows into a system() call executed as root. Affected: Lantronix SLC8000 before v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 before v9.7.0.1, and ALL firmware of SLB882/SLCx-03/SLCx-02 (no fixed build published for the latter three - a hard limiting note for defenders). Limiting factors: the services-permission privilege gate (PR:H) means it is not exploitable by anonymous/unauthenticated attackers or by low-privilege users lacking that role; no user interaction is needed once that privilege is held. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated CVSS score. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H, 9.4) describes network-reachable, low-complexity command injection yielding root and full triad loss on the device plus scope-crossing impact to serial-attached downstream systems. The only real brake is PR:H - the attacker must already hold the 'services' permission and authenticate to the terminal/CLI interface - so this is a privilege-escalation-to-root / lateral-movement primitive rather than an unauthenticated takeover. No EPSS score was provided and the flaw is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active mass exploitation; however, a detailed third-party technical write-up (revrb.net 'revrb-lantern') and a VulnCheck advisory are published, which lowers the bar to weaponization considerably. The key conflicting/missing signals: no explicit POC=YES flag or EPSS value is supplied, so exploitation likelihood must be inferred from the public technical disclosures rather than confirmed telemetry. Because these are out-of-band/console management devices (attractive to attackers as a pivot into managed infrastructure), realistic risk is elevated despite the authentication requirement. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained (or been delegated) the 'services' permission authenticates to the SLC/EMG/SLB device's terminal or CLI, then runs the 'set nfs download' command with a shell metacharacter payload in the unsanitized parameter, which is passed to system() and executed as root. This grants full control of the console server and a pivot to any serial-attached downstream equipment. Public technical write-ups (revrb.net and VulnCheck advisory) document the flaw, so working exploit details are effectively available even though no formal POC flag is set. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026
Root-level command injection in Lantronix console servers - SLC8000, EMG8500, EMG7500, SLB882, SLCx-03 and SLCx-02 - lets an authenticated user who holds the 'services' permission run arbitrary shell commands as root by abusing the 'set nfs download' command, whose parameter is passed unsanitized into a system() call, resulting in complete loss of confidentiality, integrity and availability on the device and potential downstream impact on serial-attached equipment. The privilege gate (PR:H) means anonymous or low-privilege users cannot trigger it and no user interaction is required once that role is held; authentication requirements are confirmed as privileged/authenticated by both the CVSS 4.0 vector (PR:H) and our assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (PR:H). There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed in CISA KEV, so this is a high-severity-but-not-currently-exploited defect. Lantronix has shipped firmware v9.7.0.3R3 for SLC8000 and v9.7.0.1R2 for EMG8500/EMG7500, while no fixed build has been published for SLB882, SLCx-03 or SLCx-02.
RemediationAI
Primary fix: upgrade to vendor firmware - Lantronix SLC8000 to v9.7.0.3R3 (https://ts.lantronix.com/ftp/slc8000/9.7.0.3R3/), and EMG8500/EMG7500 to v9.7.0.1R2 (https://ts.lantronix.com/ftp/emg/EMG_8500/9.7.0.1R2/ and https://ts.lantronix.com/ftp/emg/EMG_7500/9.7.0.1R2/), because those are the only vendor-released patched builds identified; SLB882, SLCx-03 and SLCx-02 have no fixed firmware at time of analysis, so owners of those models must rely on compensating controls until Lantronix ships a build. Most effective compensating control is privilege reduction: audit and strip the 'services' permission from all but the smallest possible set of trusted administrator accounts and rotate credentials for anyone who ever held it, since the vulnerability is unreachable without that role - the trade-off is that legitimate NFS-based configuration/backup workflows performed by those accounts must be reassigned to a designated administrator. If NFS file transfer is not operationally required, disable or block use of the 'set nfs download' function and firewall the unit's NFS egress so a crafted parameter cannot reach a shell, at the cost of losing remote configuration restore over NFS. Additionally, keep the terminal/CLI (SSH/Telnet, serial) and web management interfaces on a dedicated out-of-band management VLAN reachable only from jump hosts, disable Telnet and any unused CLI transports in favor of SSH, enable CLI/audit logging and alert on 'set nfs download' invocations containing shell metacharacters (;, |, $, backticks, &&), and review serial-attached downstream devices for unauthorized configuration changes. Technical ContextAI · show details
The affected devices are Lantronix out-of-band (OOB) management and serial console servers used to remotely administer network gear, servers and serial-attached devices; they expose a terminal/CLI management interface in addition to their web UI. The flaw is a classic OS command injection (CWE-78) in the CLI's 'set nfs download' routine, which is intended to let an administrator pull configuration or file content from an NFS server. Instead of validating or escaping the user-supplied parameter, the firmware concatenates it into a string handed to a system() call, so shell metacharacters supplied in the parameter are interpreted by the shell running with root privileges. Because the resulting command executes as root, an attacker with the 'services' permission can read or modify any file, alter firmware/configuration, and pivot toward devices managed through the unit's serial ports - reflected in the CVSS 4.0 scope-change metrics (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H) and our assessed CVSS 3.1 S:C rating. CPE coverage spans lantronix:slc8000, lantronix:emg8500, lantronix:emg7500, lantronix:slb882, lantronix:slcx-03 and lantronix:slcx-02, and both the CVSS 4.0 vector from the vendor/advisory data and our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment agree on network attack vector, low complexity and a high privilege requirement (PR:H), with no UI component.

DescriptionCVE.org
Lantronix SLC8000 before firmware v9.7.0.3, EMG8500/EMG7500 before firmware v9.7.0.1, and all firmware versions of SLB882/SLCx-03/SLCx-02 contain a command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated attackers with the services permission to execute arbitrary shell commands as root by exploiting the set nfs download command that passes unsanitized user input to a system() call. Attackers with the services permission can authenticate to the terminal or CLI interface and inject malicious commands through the unsanitized parameter to achieve complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability on the affected device and potentially impact downstream serial-attached devices.
Executive ViewAI
A critical command injection flaw in Lantronix console servers (SLC8000, EMG8500, EMG7500, SLB882, SLCx-03, SLCx-02) allows an authenticated user with the 'services' permission to execute root-level commands, potentially compromising the device and any serial-attached infrastructure. Although no public exploit identified at time of analysis, these devices often provide out-of-band management access to critical network and server equipment, so a successful attack could disrupt operations and expose sensitive systems. Leadership should prioritize identifying and patching affected devices to mitigate downstream risk.
