ClipBucket v5 before 5.5.3-#182 contains a file upload vulnerability that allows authenticated users to achieve remote code execution by uploading a PHP file with valid image magic bytes through the photo upload endpoint. The FileUpload::manageFile() function in fileupload.class.php fails to update the file extension after MIME validation, allowing an attacker-controlled .php extension to persist on disk and execute as PHP via PHP-FPM when the uploaded file is retrieved.
AnalysisAI
Remote code execution in ClipBucket v5 (all releases before 5.5.3-#182) allows an authenticated low-privileged user to upload a PHP file that is stored and later executed by PHP-FPM, yielding full server compromise. The photo upload endpoint validates only the file's MIME type/magic bytes but never rewrites the extension, so a payload beginning with valid image magic bytes retains its .php extension on disk (CWE-434, CVSS 4.0 base 8.7 / independently assessed CVSS 3.1 as AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/C:H/I:H/A:H). …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated low-privileged ClipBucket v5 account (PR:L) with access to the photo upload endpoint - on default deployments this is readily obtained via open user registration. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine, high-priority vulnerability with strong corroborating signals. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to ClipBucket v5 5.5.3-#182 or later; the vendor-released patch is version 5.5.3-#182 (GitHub release https://github.com/MacWarrior/clipbucket-v5/releases/tag/5.5.3-%23182, fix commit 61cce55ab26ef88fb782dfde47b44c17c56978cd, VulnCheck advisory https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/clipbucket-remote-code-execution-via-photo-upload-endpoint), which addresses extension handling in FileUpload::manageFile() and also updates the bundled nginx vhost and .htaccess rules, so those config files should be reapplied rather than left as the pre-patch versions. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all ClipBucket v5 instances and identify any internet-facing deployments running versions prior to 5.5.3-#182; disable open self-registration or restrict it to trusted domains, block PHP execution in upload directories via web server or PHP-FPM configuration, and review recent upload logs for PHP files or suspicious image-named payloads. …
