| Exploitation Conditions | The attack requires two concrete conditions to be satisfied simultaneously: first, the target must be running Splunk Web (the browser-based interface) on an unpatched version within the 9.4, 10.0, or 10.2 branches; second, an authenticated Splunk user must be socially engineered into clicking the crafted URL while their session is active. The attacker cannot exploit this vulnerability at will or without victim interaction - the CVSS UI:R and AC:H ratings directly reflect this dependency. Exploitation is limited by the need for the victim to have an active authenticated Splunk session, the attacker's ability to deliver and have a phishing link clicked, and the victim's permission scope (data accessible is bounded by the victim's Splunk role). Splunk Enterprise 10.4+ is immune regardless of configuration. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:L/A:L yields a score of 6.4 (Medium), which accurately reflects the attack's meaningful friction: AC:H and UI:R jointly require the attacker to successfully phish an authenticated Splunk user, a non-trivial social engineering dependency that substantially limits opportunistic exploitation. Confidentiality impact is rated High because SPL can query all data the victim user is authorized to access - in practice, this often means broad visibility into security logs and sensitive operational data in SIEM deployments. Integrity and availability impacts are Low, reflecting that SPL primarily reads data rather than writes or deletes it. No EPSS score was provided in the input data, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. The vulnerability is not listed in CISA KEV and no POC has been reported by the source data, indicating no confirmed active exploitation or public weaponization at time of analysis. The overall risk profile is: low priority for bulk-exploitation scenarios, but elevated for targeted attacks against high-value Splunk administrators or security analysts whose sessions would yield access to sensitive indexed data. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker identifies a target organization's Splunk deployment and crafts a Splunk Web URL containing malicious SPL tokens in the query string - for example, injecting a search that exfiltrates indexed credentials or PII to an external lookup. The attacker then sends this URL to a Splunk analyst or SOC operator via a phishing email or message, posing as an internal alert or dashboard share. When the victim, already authenticated to Splunk, clicks the link, Splunk Web substitutes the attacker-controlled token values into a live SPL search executed under the victim's permissions, potentially returning sensitive indexed data that the attacker can capture via the browser. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 19, 2026
SPL injection in Splunk Enterprise below versions 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14 enables an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary Search Processing Language commands under the privileges of any authenticated Splunk user by luring that user into clicking a specially crafted Splunk Web URL. The root cause is unsanitized substitution of URL-supplied form token values directly into SPL searches, effectively turning the victim's browser session into a proxy for the attacker's queries. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis, but the high confidentiality impact (C:H) makes this a meaningful data-exfiltration vector in targeted phishing scenarios against Splunk-heavy SOC or analytics environments.
RemediationAI
The primary fix is to upgrade Splunk Enterprise to a patched release: 9.4.14 for the 9.4 branch, 10.0.9 for the 10.0 branch, or 10.2.6 for the 10.2 branch, per the vendor advisory at https://advisory.splunk.com/advisories/SVD-2026-0801. Organizations on 10.4 or above do not require action. As a compensating control where immediate patching is not feasible, restrict Splunk Web access to internal networks or VPN-only endpoints to reduce the phishing attack surface - this does not eliminate the vulnerability but makes crafted-link delivery significantly harder. User-awareness training targeting Splunk operators about unsolicited dashboard or search links can further reduce phishing success rates. There are no known server-side configuration toggles that disable URL token substitution without also disabling legitimate dashboard functionality, so patching is the only complete remediation.

Splunk Enterprise's Simple XML dashboard framework supports form tokens - named variables that can be embedded in SPL searches and populated dynamically from the URL query string. The affected mechanism, documented in Splunk's token reference (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/create-dashboards-and-reports/simple-xml-dashboards/10.2/simple-xml-reference/token-reference), fails to neutralize SPL metacharacters when substituting token values supplied via the URL into search queries. This maps to CWE-943 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements in Data Query Logic), the search-query-injection analogue of SQL injection applied to Splunk's proprietary SPL. Because SPL has read access to all indexed data within the authenticated user's permission scope, successful injection can expose logs, events, and sensitive indexed content. The CPE identifier cpe:2.3:a:splunk:splunk_enterprise:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the full Splunk Enterprise product line; the 10.4 branch and above is confirmed unaffected, suggesting the remediation involved architectural changes to token handling in that release.

In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, an unauthenticated user could trick an authenticated user into running arbitrary Search Processing Language (SPL) commands using the permissions of the authenticated user through a crafted Splunk Web link. The SPL commands could access all relevant data. The vulnerability does not affect Splunk Enterprise 10.4 versions and above. The vulnerability is possible because Splunk Web substitutes form token values supplied through the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) into SPL searches without neutralizing them. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the user by tricking them into opening the crafted link. The unauthenticated user should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will. For more information see Token reference (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/create-dashboards-and-reports/simple-xml-dashboards/10.2/simple-xml-reference/token-reference) in the Splunk documentation.
