| Exploitation Conditions | The DB-GPT Python file-upload endpoint (python_upload_api) must be reachable by the attacker and, in v0.8.1, accepts a client-supplied user_id HTTP header that is used unsanitized as an upload path component. The concrete prerequisite is the ability to send a multipart upload request with a user_id header containing traversal sequences (../ or path separators); no credentials, tokens, or user interaction are needed (PR:N/UI:N). To convert the arbitrary write into code execution, the attacker must target a path the host will later execute (Python startup hook, cron directory, or agent script) and the service account must have write permission to that path - this write-target dependency and the network-exposure of the endpoint are the main practical limiters, along with DB-GPT's relatively narrow deployment base. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not a high-CVSS-but-low-impact paper cut. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N with VC:H/VI:H/VA:H, score 9.3) aligns fully with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, no authentication, no user interaction, and full confidentiality/integrity/availability impact via the RCE that arbitrary file write enables. The vulnerability was reported by VulnCheck (disclosure@vulncheck.com) with a dedicated advisory, which raises confidence in its reality. No CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score were provided, and no public exploit is identified at time of analysis - so there is no evidence of active mass exploitation yet, but the combination of unauthenticated write-to-RCE and a public patch commit that clearly reveals the vulnerable code path makes reverse-engineering into a working exploit straightforward; any organization running DB-GPT v0.8.1 on a network-accessible interface should treat this as urgent and patch immediately rather than waiting for exploitation to be observed. The primary limiting factor is deployment footprint (DB-GPT is a niche AI framework, not ubiquitous enterprise software), which likely means targeted rather than internet-wide exploitation. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach the DB-GPT HTTP interface sends a crafted multipart file-upload request to the Python upload endpoint with a user_id header like '../../../../etc/cron.d' (or a path to a Python startup hook or agent script directory) and an attacker-controlled file body. The malicious file lands outside python_uploads in a location that is later executed, yielding remote code execution as the DB-GPT service account. No authentication or user interaction is required (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), so exploitation is a single unauthenticated request; no public POC is identified yet, but the patch commit exposes the exact injection point. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 11, 2026
Unauthenticated arbitrary file write in DB-GPT v0.8.1 lets remote attackers achieve remote code execution by smuggling directory-traversal sequences (../) through the user_id HTTP header of the Python file-upload endpoint. Because the header value is used unsanitized as a path component of the upload directory, an attacker can escape the intended python_uploads directory and drop attacker-controlled files into code-execution-sensitive locations such as Python startup hooks, cron directories, or agent scripts. Rated CVSS 4.0 9.3 (Critical); no public exploit identified at time of analysis, though a VulnCheck advisory and an upstream fix commit confirm the flaw.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply commit e0c741bd2b5e521b128cffb3f68982dde3f7b359 (https://github.com/eosphoros-ai/DB-GPT/commit/e0c741bd2b5e521b128cffb3f68982dde3f7b359) or upgrade to the first tagged release that includes it once published, and consult the VulnCheck advisory (https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/db-gpt-path-traversal-arbitrary-file-write-via-user-id-header). Until a packaged release is deployed, compensating controls include: block or restrict network access to the Python file-upload endpoint (e.g. at a reverse proxy or WAF) and reject any request whose user_id header contains path separators or dot-dot sequences (allow only [A-Za-z0-9_-]) - trade-off: rejects legitimate non-alphanumeric user identifiers; run the DB-GPT process as a low-privilege user with a read-only filesystem for sensitive directories (cron, startup hooks, agent script paths) to blunt the file-write-to-RCE step - trade-off: may require configuration changes to writable working directories; and place authentication in front of the endpoint if it is currently exposed unauthenticated.

DB-GPT is an open-source AI application/agent framework (eosphoros-ai/DB-GPT) built on Python/FastAPI. The vulnerable code is packages/dbgpt-app/src/dbgpt_app/openapi/api_v1/python_upload_api.py, where the multipart Python file-upload handler derived the per-user upload path via os.path.join(base_dir, 'python_uploads', user_id) using a user_id taken directly from the request (an attacker-controllable HTTP header). This is a textbook CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory / Path Traversal): os.path.join with an unvalidated component containing '../' resolves outside the intended root. The fix introduces a strict allowlist regex (^[A-Za-z0-9_\-]+$) for user_id, a _resolve_upload_dir helper that canonicalizes with Path.resolve() and enforces relative_to() containment against <base_dir>/python_uploads, plus a post-creation TOCTOU/symlink re-check (is_relative_to) before writing.

DescriptionCVE.org
DB-GPT v0.8.1 contains an unauthenticated path traversal vulnerability that allows remote attackers to write arbitrary files to any location on the server by injecting directory traversal sequences into the user_id HTTP header of the Python file-upload endpoint. Attackers can send a crafted multipart upload request with a traversal-poisoned user_id header to escape the intended upload directory and write attacker-controlled content to locations such as Python startup hooks, cron directories, or agent scripts, resulting in remote code execution.

Executive ViewAI
DB-GPT v0.8.1 contains a critical vulnerability allowing unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected systems, exposing organizations to immediate risk of complete deployment compromise. Any organization running this AI platform version can be breached with a single malicious request, enabling attackers to deploy malware, exfiltrate sensitive data, disrupt services, or establish persistent access without any authentication barrier.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) Restrict network access to DB-GPT v0.8.1 instances to whitelisted authorized systems and users only via firewall rules; (2) Deploy WAF rules blocking the directory-traversal payload pattern (../) in HTTP headers, specifically the user_id header; (3) Enable comprehensive request logging and monitoring on the file-upload endpoint with alerting for suspicious user_id header values; (4) Isolate affected systems from critical infrastructure, sensitive data repositories, and elevated-privilege systems pending patch availability.
