| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to already have local, authenticated access to the affected Windows host (AV:L, PR:L) - this is not a remote or unauthenticated vector despite HTTP.sys being the HTTP protocol stack. No user interaction is needed (UI:N) and complexity is low (AC:L), so once a low-privileged local account is present the out-of-bounds read is readily triggered. Impact is limited to information disclosure (C:H, I:N, A:N) with no scope change (S:U); the main limiting factors are the prerequisite local foothold and existing authentication, which exclude purely external attackers. Affected systems are Windows builds below the patched versions listed in EUVD (e.g., Windows 11 24H2 <10.0.26100.9711, Server 2022 <10.0.20348.5761, Server 2025 <10.0.26100.33650); patched builds are not exploitable. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity information-disclosure flaw (CVSS 5.5) whose signals are consistent and point to LOW real-world urgency rather than an emergency. The CVSS vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) describes a local, low-complexity, authenticated attack that leaks data but causes no integrity or availability impact. CISA's SSVC decision aligns: Exploitation=none, Automatable=no, Technical Impact=partial - i.e., no observed exploitation and not scalable/wormable, which fits a local info-leak. The CVE is NOT in CISA KEV and no public exploit code was provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' No EPSS score was supplied, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified from the input. There is no conflict among the signals: a local vector, the need for prior authentication (PR:L), the absence of KEV/POC, and the 'partial' technical impact all converge on a patch-in-normal-cycle priority. The one tension worth noting is severity perception versus reach: C:H denotes high confidentiality impact (kernel/driver memory can contain sensitive material), but the local-only, authenticated preconditions sharply limit who can abuse it. The counterweight to deprioritization is prevalence - HTTP.sys ships in essentially all Windows servers and clients - so patch coverage matters at scale even though per-host exploitability is constrained. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who already has a low-privileged authenticated foothold on a Windows host crafts input that drives HTTP.sys to read past an allocated buffer boundary, returning adjacent kernel/driver memory that may contain sensitive data usable for further privilege escalation or lateral movement. No public proof-of-concept was identified at the time of analysis. The local attack vector (AV:L) and low complexity (AC:L) mean exploitation is technically easy once local access exists, but it cannot be launched remotely by an unauthenticated attacker. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
An out-of-bounds read in the Windows HTTP.sys kernel-mode HTTP stack lets an authenticated local user force the driver to read beyond the bounds of an allocated buffer and disclose sensitive memory contents, rated CVSS 5.5 (AV:L/PR:L/UI:N/C:H/I:N/A:N). Only hosts that already grant an attacker a local foothold with a valid low-privileged account are exposed; remote and unauthenticated attackers are excluded, and no user interaction or special complexity is required once that access exists. There is no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV absent) and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and Microsoft has released fixed builds for all affected Windows client and server versions, so patched systems are not exploitable.

Vendor-released patch is available: apply the Microsoft security update that moves each system to or above the fixed build for its release - Windows Server 2012 to 6.2.9200.26434, Server 2012 R2 to 6.3.9600.23470, Server 2016 / Windows 10 1607 to 10.0.14393.9612, Server 2019 / Windows 10 1809 to 10.0.17763.9376, Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 to 10.0.19044.7807, Windows 11 23H2 to 10.0.22631.7652, Windows 11 24H2 to 10.0.26100.9711, Windows 11 25H2 to 10.0.26200.9711, Windows 11 26H1 to 10.0.28000.3231, Windows 11 26H2 to 10.0.26300.9711, Server 2022 to 10.0.20348.5761, and Server 2025 to 10.0.26100.33650, using the packages linked from https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-70208. Because exploitation requires local authenticated access, the practical compensating controls are host-side: enforce least privilege so ordinary users cannot reach the interfaces that drive HTTP.sys (recognizing that this limits legitimate use of locally hosted HTTP services), audit and remove unnecessary local or service accounts and interactive logon rights on multi-user and RDP-exposed servers (which may disrupt shared-host workflows), and restrict RDP/console access to trusted administrators. Disabling or unbinding HTTP.sys-based listeners reduces the exposure surface but will break IIS sites, WinRM/WinHTTP-dependent services and WebDAV endpoints, so it is only viable where those roles are not required - patching remains the only complete fix and no vendor workaround is documented beyond applying the update.

Technical ContextAI · show details
HTTP.sys is the Windows kernel-mode driver that implements the HTTP protocol stack and kernel-level request queuing behind IIS, WinHTTP/WebDAV services, and numerous other Windows components that listen on HTTP or HTTPS. The flaw is a CWE-125 out-of-bounds read: a length or offset value derived from attacker-influenced input is used without adequate bounds validation when the driver parses or copies data, causing it to read past the end of an allocation. Because HTTP.sys runs at kernel privilege, a successful read can return uninitialized or adjacent pool memory into a response or logged output reachable by the local caller, producing a high-confidentiality information disclosure with no integrity or availability impact and no scope change. The local, authenticated vector is characteristic of this class: the attacker must already be able to interact with the HTTP.sys component on the host (for example through a local service or application that issues HTTP requests), which limits exploitation to post-compromise or multi-tenant local scenarios rather than external network access.
