Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an authenticated Leantime account (CVSS PR:L) that holds CREATE authorization on a target project, and a reachable JSON-RPC API endpoint that exposes the Blueprints import operation; the attacker supplies a crafted filename containing a PHP URL wrapper (http://, ftp://, file://, php://) or ../ traversal sequence to Blueprints::import(). The vulnerability is limited to Leantime 3.6.2 (and unfixed earlier builds) before PR #3656; it does not require user interaction (UI:N) but is gated by the authentication/authorization requirement, meaning it is not exploitable by anonymous internet users. Real-world SSRF value further depends on the deployment environment - the cloud-metadata pivot only pays off when Leantime runs on a cloud instance with an exposed metadata service.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 base score is 8.4 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N and VC:H/SC:H, meaning network-reachable, low-complexity, low-privilege exploitation with high confidentiality impact on both the vulnerable system and a subsequent system (the SSRF target) - the SC:H is what elevates this beyond a plain file read. PR:L is the key limiter: the attacker must be an authenticated Leantime user, and the fix's authorization test (test_import_authorizes_create_on_target_project) indicates CREATE rights on a target project are required, so this is not an unauthenticated internet-wide bug. Public PoC exists (GHSA-gphg-6h4g-mg22 and the VulnCheck advisory), which raises practical risk, but no EPSS score and no CISA KEV entry were provided, so there is no evidence of mass or automated exploitation - treat this as a credible, prioritize-if-exposed issue rather than an emergency internet-worm scenario. Note the impact-metric tension: the vendor set VI:L/SI:L, yet the described capability is read-only (SSRF/LFI), so integrity impact appears marginal - the confidentiality metrics (VC:H/SC:H) are the meaningful drivers.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged Leantime user who can create content on a project submits a Blueprints import request via the JSON-RPC API with a filename of http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/iam/security-credentials/ or file:///etc/passwd. The server calls file_get_contents() on that value, and the response (cloud IAM credentials or local file contents) is returned or ingested, letting the attacker harvest secrets. Publicly available PoC code (GHSA-gphg-6h4g-mg22) demonstrates the technique, and the low attack complexity means it is straightforward to reproduce.

AnalysisAIv1 – Jul 30, 2026

Server-side request forgery and local file inclusion in Leantime 3.6.2 lets authenticated attackers coerce the server into reading attacker-chosen resources by feeding unsanitized filenames to file_get_contents() inside the Blueprints::import() method. Because the JSON-RPC import endpoint accepts PHP URL wrappers and path-traversal sequences, a low-privileged user with project CREATE rights can pivot to cloud metadata endpoints (e.g. 169.254.169.254) or exfiltrate arbitrary files from the host filesystem. Publicly available exploit code exists (VulnCheck advisory and a GitHub security advisory PoC), though there is no public exploit identified as being actively exploited in the wild.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to the Leantime release that incorporates PR #3656 (https://github.com/Leantime/leantime/pull/3656); an upstream fix is available (PR/commit), but a released patched version number was not independently confirmed in the available data, so verify the fixed tag against the Leantime repository (https://github.com/Leantime/leantime) and the VulnCheck advisory before deploying. Until patched, restrict access to the JSON-RPC API endpoint and the Blueprints import functionality - limit which accounts hold project CREATE permissions, since exploitation requires that authorization, and place the app behind network egress filtering that blocks the web server from reaching link-local cloud metadata addresses (169.254.169.254) and other internal ranges, which neutralizes the SSRF pivot at the cost of breaking any legitimate outbound integrations. As a stopgap you can mirror the fix's controls at the platform level by disabling PHP URL wrappers for file functions (allow_url_fopen=Off) to kill http://, ftp:// and file:// reads via file_get_contents(), accepting that any feature relying on remote file fetches will stop working.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Leantime is an open-source, PHP/Laravel-based project management and productivity application. The flaw is a classic CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) rooted in unvalidated input passed to PHP's file_get_contents(), which transparently honors stream wrappers (http://, ftp://, php://, file://, data://) as well as relative path segments. In the vulnerable Blueprints::import() the user-supplied $filename was passed directly to file_get_contents() and then to DOMDocument::loadXML(), so no realpath() canonicalization, allow-list, extension check, or wrapper filtering stood between the request and the read. The upstream fix (PR #3656) resolves the filename via realpath(), enforces an allow-list of directories (the PHP temp upload dir and the shipped imports/ fixture directory), requires a .xml extension, rejects non-regular files, and adds LIBXML_NONET to loadXML() to block XXE-driven network fetches - confirming both the SSRF (wrapper) and LFI (traversal) reads plus a secondary XXE-SSRF surface. The affected component is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:leantime:leantime with no upper version bound listed.

DescriptionCVE.org

Leantime 3.6.2 contains a server-side request forgery and local file inclusion vulnerability that allows authenticated attackers to read internal resources by passing unsanitized user-supplied filenames to file_get_contents() in the Blueprints::import() method without path validation. Attackers can submit crafted filenames containing URL wrappers or path traversal sequences through the JSON-RPC API endpoint to access cloud metadata services or read arbitrary files from the server filesystem.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Leantime project management platform version 3.6.2 contains a critical vulnerability enabling authenticated users with minimal permissions to exfiltrate cloud infrastructure credentials and sensitive server files through server-side request forgery. In cloud-deployed environments, this creates immediate risk of credential compromise and lateral movement into cloud infrastructure. Organizations running this version must treat this as a priority incident requiring urgent mitigation.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Network segmentation: block outbound connections from Leantime servers to 169.254.169.254 and cloud provider metadata endpoints via egress firewall rules. Disable the JSON-RPC import functionality entirely if it is not actively required for operations. Restrict project CREATE permissions only to administrators and trusted power users. Enable detailed file access and network connection logging on Leantime servers to detect exploitation attempts. Implement secrets rotation for any cloud provider access keys that may exist on the same infrastructure.
