The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Requires the victim to open or import an attacker-crafted PDF document in LibreOffice Draw's PDF-import path (UI:P/UI:R). The trigger is a PDF stream object whose dictionary-declared length exceeds the number of bytes actually present, so the copy overruns the heap buffer. Exploitation is LIMITED to local delivery (AV:L) with mandatory user interaction and no network-facing attack surface; it needs no authentication (PR:N) and no non-default configuration since PDF import is a standard Draw feature. Realistic impact is application crash/DoS (VA:H) rather than reliable code execution, given low confidentiality/integrity metrics.

Impact

This is a legitimate but moderate-severity memory-corruption bug, not a top-tier priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P) makes it a local, user-interaction-gated flaw: an attacker cannot reach it over the network but must convince a victim to open a malicious PDF in LibreOffice Draw. The impact metrics tell the real story - VC:L/VI:L (low confidentiality/integrity) with VA:H (high availability) and Exploit Maturity E:P (proof-of-concept) indicate a crash-dominant heap overflow rather than a reliable code-execution primitive; the score of 5.4 is consistent with that. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so exploitation is not confirmed to be occurring or trivially automatable. The signals are internally consistent (local + user-interaction + availability-heavy), so there is no CVSS-vs-description contradiction to flag. Bottom line: a real, patch-worthy heap CWE-787 write, but a targeted-social-engineering issue rather than a mass-exploitation emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker crafts a PDF whose embedded stream object declares a length larger than the bytes actually present, then delivers it via email or download to a target. When the victim imports/opens the PDF in LibreOffice Draw, the copy routine reads and writes past the end of the heap buffer, corrupting heap memory and typically crashing the application; reliable code execution would require additional heap-grooming work. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis (Exploit Maturity is only proof-of-concept).

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 22, 2026

Heap buffer overflow in LibreOffice Draw's PDF import path allows a crafted PDF to corrupt heap memory and crash the application when a victim opens or imports the document; the independent assessment rates confidentiality and integrity impact as low but availability impact as high, making denial of service the most realistic outcome. Exploitation requires local delivery and mandatory user interaction, and no authentication or non-default configuration is needed because PDF import is a standard feature. Publicly available exploit code exists per the CVSS 4.0 E:P metric, but there is no confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV entry); no EPSS score was provided.

RemediationAI

Patch available per vendor advisory; apply the vendor fix by upgrading to the patched LibreOffice release referenced in the security advisory at https://www.libreoffice.org/about-us/security/advisories/cve-2026-63274. The fix clamps the declared length of PDF stream objects to the bytes actually read, preventing the heap overflow. Because the input data does not name an exact fixed version, treat the advisory's patched version as the target and verify the build number after upgrading. If patching is delayed, avoid opening or importing untrusted PDF files with LibreOffice Draw, as PDF import is the attack vector; this is a functional trade-off for users who rely on Draw for PDF review. Running LibreOffice in a sandbox or with reduced OS privileges can limit the impact of a crash or memory corruption, but may break integrations or add administrative overhead. Blocking or filtering PDF files at the email gateway or file-share layer can reduce exposure, though it may impede legitimate document workflows.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in LibreOffice Draw's PDF import filter, which parses PDF stream objects. PDF streams include a dictionary entry /Length that declares the stream's byte count; the importer trusted this value and used it to copy the stream into a heap buffer without verifying it against the number of bytes actually present in the file. When a crafted PDF declares a length larger than the actual data, the copy operation reads and writes past the end of the allocated buffer, producing an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787). The fix clamps the declared length to the bytes actually read. The affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:the_document_foundation:libreoffice:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (The Document Foundation LibreOffice), specifically the Draw component's PDF import feature; consult the advisory at https://www.libreoffice.org/about-us/security/advisories/cve-2026-63274 for details.

DescriptionCVE.org

LibreOffice Draw can import PDF documents. A heap buffer overflow existed when importing a stream object. The length of the stream was taken from the object's own dictionary and was not checked against the number of bytes actually present, so copying the stream read and wrote past the end of the buffer holding it. In fixed versions the declared length is clamped to the bytes actually read.

Attack Technique

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
