MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Initial Access The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that (1) the target is running REDAXO core <= 5.21.1 with the 'install' addon present, (2) a user who is an authenticated administrator (the execute() method enforces isAdmin()) has an active backend session, and (3) that admin is socially engineered into visiting an attacker-controlled page while logged in (UI:R). The attacker needs no credentials of their own but must know or guess a valid addonkey and target file id. Full RCE additionally requires a supply-chain compromise of a redaxo.org package or the existence of a known-vulnerable prior version to downgrade to; absent that, impact is limited to forced/unwanted updates and site disruption. These admin-session and user-interaction requirements meaningfully limit real-world exploitation. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but conditional-risk flaw, not a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L, base 6.4) is internally consistent with a classic CSRF: PR:N reflects that the attacker themselves is unauthenticated (they ride the victim admin's session), UI:R captures that a logged-in admin must be lured to a malicious page, and AC:H reflects the timing/social-engineering conditions plus the need for the target to be an authenticated admin. No EPSS score, KEV entry, or automatability signal is provided in the input, so there is NO evidence of active exploitation - the correct reading is that this is a targeted, victim-interaction-dependent issue rather than a mass-scanned worm candidate. A working PoC (a single <img> tag) is published in the GitHub Security Advisory (GHSA-m8r3-22v6-g877), so exploit code effectively exists, but that must not be conflated with active exploitation. The headline 'RCE' impact is conditional: the description explicitly states RCE only materializes if chained with a supply-chain compromise of a package on redaxo.org OR a forced downgrade to a known-vulnerable addon version - otherwise the realistic impact is forced/unwanted updates and site disruption. Net: real and worth patching, but the AC:H + UI:R gating and lack of exploitation telemetry keep real-world risk in the moderate band. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a web page containing an auto-loading image (or hidden request) pointing at the victim's REDAXO backend install-package-update endpoint with a chosen addonkey and file id, then lures a logged-in administrator to visit it. The admin's browser silently replays the request with their session cookie, forcing the specified addon to be updated/downgraded to an attacker-chosen version; a public PoC exists in the vendor advisory. If the targeted version is known-vulnerable or the package is supply-chain compromised, this escalates to code execution on the server. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 23, 2026
Cross-site request forgery in REDAXO CMS 5.21.1 and earlier lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker (CVSS PR:N with UI:R) lure a logged-in backend administrator into silently triggering an addon update or downgrade from the REDAXO package server via a single forged request to index.php?page=install/packages&rex-api-call=install_package_update. The attacker must know or guess a valid addonkey and target file id, and the admin must have an active session and visit an attacker-controlled page, so this is a genuine but conditional-risk flaw rather than a drop-everything emergency; absent a supply-chain compromise of a redaxo.org package or a vulnerable prior version to downgrade to, the practical impact is limited to forced or unwanted addon installs and site disruption. No active exploitation in CISA KEV has been reported, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis beyond the minimal image-tag proof-of-concept published in the vendor advisory.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade REDAXO core to 5.21.2 or later, which adds requiresCsrfProtection() returning true to rex_api_install_package_update (PR https://github.com/redaxo/core/pull/6579, commit https://github.com/redaxo/core/commit/a13abbffbad4fdea46a4edc86cdba3335ca9e8f3); see the advisory at https://github.com/redaxo/core/security/advisories/GHSA-m8r3-22v6-g877. If immediate upgrading is not possible, backport that single method override into redaxo/src/addons/install/lib/api/api_package_update.php - the change is small and low-risk, though it must be reapplied after any core update. Additional compensating controls with trade-offs: set backend session cookies to SameSite=Lax or Strict, which blocks the cross-site subresource request used in the published PoC but can affect legitimate cross-site behaviors; disable or remove the 'install' addon if package management is not needed, accepting loss of addon install/update functionality; and restrict access to /index.php admin pages by IP allowlist or a WAF rule that rejects cross-origin requests carrying rex-api-call=install_package_update, noting that IP filtering is brittle for mobile or remote admins. Training admins not to browse untrusted pages while logged into the backend addresses only the user-interaction prerequisite and is not a durable fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is a classic missing-CSRF-token state-changing action (CWE-352) in REDAXO's PHP API layer. The base class rex_api_function defines requiresCsrfProtection() returning false (redaxo/src/core/lib/api_function.php:277-280), making CSRF protection opt-in for every API subclass. The install addon correctly opts in for rex_api_install_package_add and rex_api_install_package_delete, but rex_api_install_package_update (redaxo/src/addons/install/lib/api/api_package_update.php:8-39) never overrides the method, so it inherits false. Its execute() enforces only rex::getUser()?->isAdmin() and then reads the addonkey (string) and file (int) request parameters and hands them to rex_install_package_update(), which downloads and installs that specific addon version from redaxo.org. Because authentication is enforced but request-forgery is not, the endpoint accepts a state-changing GET that is automatically accompanied by the victim admin's session cookie. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:L) reflects a network-reachable endpoint with high attack complexity (guessing/knowing the addon key and file id, plus social engineering the admin), no attacker credentials, required admin user interaction, low confidentiality impact, high integrity impact (arbitrary forced installation) and low availability impact; the composer package pkg:composer/redaxo_source is the affected artifact.

Classic CSRF: attacker is unauth (PR:N) but rides an authenticated admin's session requiring them to visit a page (UI:R, AC:H); forced arbitrary version install is high integrity, with limited confidentiality/availability.

DescriptionCVE.org
Summary
The rex_api_install_package_update API function (install addon) does not override requiresCsrfProtection(), which defaults to false in the base class rex_api_function. Any authenticated admin can therefore be tricked via a CSRF attack into silently triggering a package update from the REDAXO package server.

$installer = new rex_install_package_update();
// ... downloads and installs $addonkey version $fileId from redaxo.org
}
// requiresCsrfProtection() NOT overridden - defaults to false
}For comparison, rex_api_install_package_add and rex_api_install_package_delete both correctly return true. Only rex_api_install_package_update is missing this.
PoC
<!-- Attacker-controlled page -->
<img src="https://victim-redaxo.example.com/index.php?page=install/packages&rex-api-call=install_package_update&addonkey=some_addon&file=42" />When an authenticated admin visits this page, the request is automatically made with their session cookie, causing some_addon to be updated to version file_id=42.
Impact
An attacker who can lure an admin to a malicious page can force-install specific addon versions. If combined with a supply-chain compromise of a package on redaxo.org, or by targeting a downgrade to a known-vulnerable version, this becomes a remote code execution vector. Even without supply-chain compromise, it can be used to disrupt the site by forcing unwanted updates.
Fix
Add requiresCsrfProtection() to rex_api_install_package_update:
protected function requiresCsrfProtection()
{
return true;
