Local extraction of an attacker-supplied archive (AV:L) that the victim must trigger (UI:R); arbitrary file overwrite chains to code execution, giving full C/I/A, though direct primitive is write-only.

DescriptionCVE.org

Stanza is a Stanford NLP Python library for tokenization, sentence segmentation, NER, and parsing of many human languages. Prior to 1.14.0, stanza.resources.common.unzip in stanza/resources/common.py passes downloaded model and resource archives to zipfile.ZipFile.extractall without validating member paths, and the vulnerable extraction path is reachable through stanza.download and stanza.install_corenlp. A malicious archive containing parent-directory traversal entries can write outside the intended model directory, allowing files writable by the Stanza process to be overwritten and potentially enabling code execution through modified shell configuration, SSH authorization data, Python packages, or executable scripts. This issue is fixed in version 1.14.0.

AnalysisAI

Zip-slip path traversal in the Stanford NLP Stanza Python library before 1.14.0 lets a malicious model or resource archive write files outside the intended model directory, overwriting anything writable by the Stanza process and potentially achieving code execution via modified shell configuration, SSH authorized_keys, Python packages, or executable scripts. The vulnerable code path is reached when a victim runs stanza.download() or stanza.install_corenlp(); exploitation therefore requires the fetched archive to be attacker-controlled (compromised or malicious mirror, MITM of the transfer, or a victim-supplied resource URL) plus user interaction to initiate the download. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Requires the victim to invoke stanza.download() or stanza.install_corenlp() (UI:R) and for the fetched model/resource zip to be attacker-controlled - via a compromised or malicious download mirror, MITM of the archive transfer, or the victim being induced to point Stanza at an attacker-supplied resource URL. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H = 7.8) frames this as a local, user-interaction-dependent zip-slip (Zip Slip / CWE-22) rather than a remotely triggerable flaw: AV:L plus UI:R means the victim must actively run stanza.download or stanza.install_corenlp against a malicious archive. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upgrade to Stanza 1.14.0, which is the exact vendor-released fix version containing the _is_within_directory containment check introduced in commit a7085e75abdf35f277754dda472bba4e6819bcbb and referenced by the advisory at https://github.com/stanfordnlp/stanza/security/advisories/GHSA-2fwf-f686-7p34. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory all Stanza deployments and confirm which environments run versions earlier than 1.14.0 by checking dependency manifests and 'pip show stanza' output, then immediately halt ad-hoc stanza.download() and stanza.install_corenlp() calls against non-Stanford URLs or unverified mirrors and confirm that all model fetches use TLS verification; on hosts known to have performed recent downloads, inspect shell profile files, ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, site-packages, and executable script directories for unexpected modifications. …
