| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the UpdateCE.php update handler in GetSimple CMS CE prior to 1.5 to process an attacker-controlled ZIP archive, which the extraction routine writes into the web-accessible root without validating file type or extraction path (enabling PHP webshell drop and ../ directory traversal). The limiting factors are significant: per the CWE-352/CSRF classification the attack hinges on an authenticated administrator being tricked into triggering the update (user interaction plus an existing admin session), and per the supplied CVSS vector it alternatively requires high existing privileges; SSVC marks it not automatable, so it cannot be mass-exploited by unauthenticated scanning. Only versions below 1.5 are affected; 1.5 contains the fix. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-severity issue but with meaningful real-world constraints. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H, 9.1) describes a scope-changing remote code execution, and SSVC reports Technical Impact: total - consistent with arbitrary PHP execution as the web-server user. However, there is a notable internal conflict: the CWE is CWE-352 (Cross-Site Request Forgery) and 'CSRF' appears in the tags, yet the CVSS vector lists PR:H and UI:N - CSRF exploitation normally implies PR:N with UI:R (an unauthenticated attacker tricking an authenticated admin), not high privileges with no interaction. This discrepancy should be verified with the vendor advisory, as it changes who can realistically exploit it. SSVC marks Exploitation: poc (proof-of-concept exists) and Automatable: no, meaning this is not a wormable, mass-scannable flaw - exploitation is targeted and requires either admin-level access or social-engineering an administrator. No EPSS score and no CISA KEV listing were provided, and there is no evidence of active exploitation. Net: a legitimate priority for any GetSimple CMS CE operator because the impact is total RCE, but the 'not automatable' nature, the privilege/interaction gating, and the niche deployment footprint place it below internet-wide emergencies like unauthenticated-no-interaction RCEs. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a malicious ZIP archive containing a PHP webshell (optionally using ../ path-traversal entry names) and causes the UpdateCE.php update handler to process it - plausibly by luring an authenticated administrator to a page that forges the update request (CSRF). The handler extracts the PHP file into the web-accessible root, and the attacker then requests the planted file to execute arbitrary code as the web-server user. Proof-of-concept exploitation is indicated (SSVC Exploitation: poc). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Remote code execution in GetSimple CMS CE prior to 1.5 allows an attacker to plant and execute PHP code as the web-server user by getting the UpdateCE.php handler to process a malicious ZIP archive. The handler extracts archive contents into the web-accessible root without validating file types or paths, so PHP webshells and ../ traversal writes are possible; publicly available exploit code exists, and SSVC rates it not automatable. Exploitation is high impact (CVSS 9.1) but constrained by the need to trigger the update through an administrator session or high existing privileges, so it is not mass-exploitable; version 1.5 contains the fix.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to GetSimple CMS CE 1.5 or later; this is the vendor-released patch and contains the extraction validation fix. If immediate upgrade is not possible, disable or remove the UpdateCE.php update handler and avoid processing untrusted update ZIPs, accepting that this breaks the built-in update workflow; restrict administrator access and admin-panel network exposure to trusted users/networks to reduce the CSRF trigger path, though this does not fix the underlying extraction flaw. Additional compensating controls include placing the CMS behind a WAF that blocks unexpected ZIP upload/update requests to UpdateCE.php and ensuring the web server user has minimal write permissions outside the intended CMS directories, but these are partial mitigations with operational side effects. See the vendor advisory at https://github.com/GetSimpleCMS-CE/GetSimpleCMS-CE/security/advisories/GHSA-q5rx-gppg-768r for the official fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
GetSimple CMS CE is a PHP-based content management system. The vulnerable component is UpdateCE.php, an update handler that fetches a ZIP archive and extracts it into the installation web root. The core weaknesses are unsafe archive extraction and missing path/file-type validation: entry names can contain ../ sequences (Zip Slip/path traversal) and PHP files land in a web-accessible directory, turning the extraction into remote code execution under the web-server account. The assigned CWE-352 points to the CSRF angle: an attacker can induce an authenticated administrator to trigger the update, and the supplied CVSS vector (PR:H) also reflects a high-privilege requirement, while the independent assessment reframes it as PR:N/UI:R for the CSRF-driven path. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:getsimplecms-ce:getsimplecms-ce:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* identifies all GetSimpleCMS-CE builds before 1.5 as affected; 1.5 adds validation.

CWE-352/CSRF tagging implies an unauthenticated attacker (PR:N) forging a request that an authenticated admin must trigger (UI:R); extraction to web root yields total impact and scope change to the host (S:C).

2DescriptionCVE.org
GetSimple CMS is a content management system (CMS), and GetSimple CMS CE is the community edition of that CMS. Prior to version 1.5, the update handler in UpdateCE.php downloads a ZIP archive and extracts its contents into the web root without validating file types or extraction paths. Because PHP files are written into a web-accessible directory, an attacker who can cause a malicious archive to be processed achieves remote code execution as the web-server user. Entry names are also used unsafely, allowing directory traversal (../) to write files outside the intended extraction directory. This issue has been patched in version 1.5.

Executive ViewAI
GetSimple CMS CE versions prior to 1.5 contain a critical remote code execution vulnerability that can result in full compromise of the web server if successfully exploited. Although exploitation is constrained and not mass-exploitable, publicly available exploit code exists, so any unpatched, internet-facing deployment remains a high-priority risk for data theft, website defacement, or lateral movement into the internal network. Leadership should ensure all affected instances are upgraded to version 1.5 and that administrative access is tightly controlled.
