Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the target application uses the OpenEXRCore C API and exposes exr_attr_set_bytes() - directly or indirectly - to user-controlled input such as externally supplied EXR files. The precise trigger is a caller passing hint_length > 0 alongside a NULL type_hint pointer; the crash is deterministic only under this specific parameter combination. The CVSS 4.0 AV:L vector confirms the flaw is reachable only at local system access or API invocation level, not via an independent network path - remote exploitation is possible only if a network-facing service parses user-supplied EXR content using this library. Impact is strictly denial of service (process crash); no code execution, privilege escalation, or data disclosure is possible. Exploitation is limited to OpenEXR versions 3.4.0 through 3.4.12 and does not affect earlier release lines.

Impact

The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.9 and constrains exploitation to local system access or direct API invocation, immediately reducing the realistic attacker population compared to a network-reachable flaw. Impact is strictly VA:H (high availability) with no confidentiality or integrity consequences (VC:N/VI:N). The PR:N assignment in a local-vector context likely reflects that the library API itself requires no elevated privileges - any process that loads OpenEXRCore and accepts user-supplied EXR data can reach the flaw - but it does not imply unauthenticated remote exploitation without a network-exposed parsing path. The crash is deterministic, meaning it is highly reliable for DoS but offers no path to code execution. No CISA KEV listing and no confirmed public exploit code further reduce urgency. EPSS data is absent from available intelligence. The SUSE distribution tag suggests the vulnerable library may be packaged broadly across enterprise Linux systems in VFX pipelines, modestly widening the exposure surface beyond direct source builds.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker supplies a crafted EXR file or manipulates API arguments to a VFX rendering engine or media ingest service that uses the OpenEXRCore C API for attribute processing, passing a positive hint_length with a NULL type_hint to exr_attr_set_bytes(). The missing NULL check allows exr_attr_bytes_create() to copy from address zero, immediately crashing the host process. Because the crash is deterministic, a single malformed input reliably terminates the target, making repeated DoS straightforward in any pipeline that does not isolate EXR parsing in a sandboxed subprocess.

AnalysisAIv1 – Aug 25, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in OpenEXR 3.4.0-3.4.12 causes a deterministic crash in the OpenEXRCore C API function exr_attr_set_bytes() when a caller passes a positive hint_length alongside a NULL type_hint pointer, enabling reliable denial of service against any application that processes EXR content via this API. The flaw is confined to availability impact with no confidentiality or integrity exposure, and the CVSS 4.0 local attack vector limits remote exploitation to indirect paths such as network-facing EXR parsing pipelines. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified; a vendor-released patch is available in version 3.4.13.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to OpenEXR version 3.4.13, which resolves this vulnerability per the vendor security advisory at https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/security/advisories/GHSA-xx72-f24p-cf6r. SUSE-packaged installations should monitor SUSE security advisories for distribution-level backported patches to the applicable package stream. If an immediate library upgrade is not feasible, callers of exr_attr_set_bytes() should enforce at their own application boundary that any hint_length > 0 is accompanied by a non-NULL type_hint pointer before delegating to the library; this prevents the triggering condition without requiring a library update but introduces ongoing maintenance responsibility and does not address similar latent gaps elsewhere in the library. No other confirmed workarounds are documented in available intelligence.

Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenEXR is the reference implementation and specification for the EXR (Extended Range) high-dynamic-range image format, maintained by the Academy Software Foundation and pervasive in visual effects and motion picture production. The vulnerable component is exr_attr_set_bytes() in the OpenEXRCore C library. The root cause is CWE-20 (Improper Input Validation): the function validates the top-level exr_attr_bytes_t value pointer but omits a required NULL check on the nested type_hint pointer when hint_length > 0. Internally, exr_attr_bytes_create() allocates a destination type-hint buffer and then issues a memory copy from the NULL source, producing a deterministic crash. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:academysoftwarefoundation:openexr:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* confirms the affected vendor and product; the SUSE tag indicates distribution packaging exposure through Linux package managers.

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenEXR is the reference implementation and specification for the EXR high-dynamic-range image file format, widely used in the motion picture industry. Versions 3.4.0 through 3.4.12 contain a NULL pointer dereference in the OpenEXRCore function exr_attr_set_bytes(). The public setter validates the top-level exr_attr_bytes_t value pointer but does not verify that the nested type_hint pointer is non-NULL when hint_length is greater than zero. When a caller supplies a positive hint_length together with a NULL type_hint, exr_attr_bytes_create() allocates a destination type-hint buffer and then copies from the NULL source pointer, causing a deterministic crash. The flaw is reachable through the public OpenEXRCore C API and results in a denial of service. The issue is fixed in version 3.4.13.
