MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target application uses the OpenEXRUtil public API - specifically SampleCountChannel::set(x, y, count) or SampleCountChannel::Edit - on EXR content supplied or influenced by an attacker. The CVSS PR:N designation means no authentication to the application is required, but the attacker must control the EXR file content presented to the library. Applications that exclusively process internally generated or cryptographically authenticated EXR files are not exploitable. The vulnerability is limited to deep-image EXR content that exercises the sample-count code path; standard scanline or tiled EXR images without deep channels may not reach the vulnerable function. Platform or privilege level does not limit exploitation beyond what the calling application enforces. |
| Impact | The CVSS 3.1 vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H yields a base score of 6.2, reflecting a purely availability-impacting flaw with no confidentiality or integrity consequences. The AV:L designation requires careful interpretation: the vector is 'local' in the sense that exploitation requires the application process to invoke the vulnerable API, but if an application reads EXR files from network sources - typical in VFX render farms and asset management systems - a remotely-supplied crafted file achieves the same outcome. EPSS data is not provided; given the library's niche deployment domain and absence from CISA KEV, opportunistic mass exploitation is unlikely, but targeted attacks against film-production or media-processing pipelines processing untrusted EXR content are credible. No POC has been publicly identified. The 'Information Disclosure' tag from the SUSE advisory conflicts with the CVSS C:N metric - this likely reflects a tagging artifact rather than a confirmed data-exposure component, and should not be treated as a confirmed confidentiality impact without further vendor clarification. Overall real-world priority is moderate: mission-critical in VFX/rendering workflows, lower in environments that do not process externally supplied EXR files. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can deliver a crafted EXR file to a rendering pipeline or asset-management application built on OpenEXR crafts an image whose deep-image sample-count channel contains a pixel with a sample count of UINT_MAX. When the application calls SampleCountChannel::set or triggers endEdit() via the Edit destructor, the library enters the infinite loop inside roundListSizeUp(), hanging the worker process indefinitely. In a render farm context, this could block render slots or crash a deadline-sensitive production pipeline with a single malicious file submission. No public exploit code exists, but the vulnerability mechanics are straightforward and derivable from the public description. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Aug 25, 2026
Infinite-loop denial of service in OpenEXR versions prior to 3.2.10, 3.3.12, and 3.4.13 allows an attacker to permanently hang any process that parses a crafted EXR image by triggering an integer overflow in the sample-count helper roundListSizeUp(). When UINT_MAX is passed as a sample-count value, 32-bit unsigned left-shift arithmetic wraps the accumulator to zero, producing a loop condition that never terminates. The vulnerability is reachable through public OpenEXRUtil APIs, making it exploitable wherever applications accept externally-supplied EXR files. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade OpenEXR to one of the fixed releases: 3.2.10, 3.3.12, or 3.4.13, as documented in the upstream advisory at https://github.com/AcademySoftwareFoundation/openexr/security/advisories/GHSA-mff9-68x3-h8rh. SUSE Linux Enterprise users should apply the vendor-provided packages via SUSE-SU-2026:22653 or SUSE-SU-2026:3169 depending on their SLE release. Where immediate patching is not feasible, applications processing untrusted EXR content should implement an input validation layer that rejects sample-count values at or near UINT_MAX (4294967295) before passing them to SampleCountChannel APIs; this requires application-layer changes and may break valid edge-case files. As an additional compensating control, isolate EXR-processing workloads in sandboxed or container-scoped processes with CPU-time limits (ulimit -t on Linux, or cgroup cpu.max) so that an infinite loop cannot monopolize host resources indefinitely. Neither workaround eliminates the underlying flaw; patching is the definitive fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
OpenEXR (CPE: cpe:2.3:a:academysoftwarefoundation:openexr) is the Academy Software Foundation's reference C++ implementation of the EXR high-dynamic-range image format, extensively embedded in VFX rendering engines, compositing tools, and media asset pipelines. The root cause is CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound): the internal helper roundListSizeUp() computes the next power of two by repeatedly left-shifting a 32-bit unsigned integer. For any normal value the sequence terminates, but for UINT_MAX (0xFFFFFFFF) the accumulator progresses to 0x80000000 and the subsequent shift wraps by unsigned overflow to 0x00000000. Because 0 is always less than UINT_MAX, the loop predicate remains forever true. Two distinct public API paths reach this code: calling SampleCountChannel::set(x, y, UINT_MAX) directly on a valid pixel, or manipulating the sample-count buffer through SampleCountChannel::Edit, whose destructor invokes endEdit() and exercises the same path.

1DescriptionCVE.org
OpenEXR is the reference implementation and specification for the EXR image format, widely used in the motion picture industry. Versions prior to 3.2.10, 3.3.12, and 3.4.13 contain an infinite-loop vulnerability in SampleCountChannel. The helper roundListSizeUp() rounds a sample-list size up to the next power of two using repeated unsigned left shifts, which terminates for normal values but fails for UINT_MAX: the sequence reaches 0x80000000, and the next left shift wraps the 32-bit value to 0. Because 0 remains less than UINT_MAX, the loop never progresses and never exits. The bug is reachable through public OpenEXRUtil APIs, either by editing the sample-count buffer through SampleCountChannel::Edit (whose destructor calls endEdit()) or by calling SampleCountChannel::set(x, y, UINT_MAX) on a valid pixel. This issue has been fixed in versions 3.2.10, 3.3.12, and 3.4.13.
