DescriptionCVE.org

Wagtail is an open source content management system built on Django. In versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3 and 7.4.2, a low-level user with the "Can submit translation" permission can create translations for any page, including those they do not have permissions for. This issue has been fixed in versions 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2.

AnalysisAI

Authorization bypass in Wagtail CMS allows authenticated low-privilege users to create translations for pages beyond their permitted scope. Versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2 fail to enforce page-level permission checks when a user submits a translation request, exposing content of restricted pages to anyone holding the 'Can submit translation' permission. No public exploit code or active exploitation (CISA KEV) has been identified, but the low attack complexity and network-accessible vector make this straightforward to abuse for information disclosure.

Technical ContextAI

Wagtail is an open-source Django-based CMS (cpe:2.3:a:wagtail:wagtail:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) that includes a built-in internationalization and translation workflow. The translation subsystem exposes a permission named 'Can submit translation' which is intended to allow designated editors to initiate content translation jobs. The root cause is CWE-280 (Improper Handling of Insufficient Permissions or Privileges): the translation submission handler fails to cross-check whether the requesting user also holds the necessary page-level edit or view permissions before creating the translation record. Because Wagtail's page tree enforces granular per-page or per-section permissions, bypassing those checks via the translation pathway undermines the entire page-level access model. The vulnerability is purely server-side and requires no client-side exploit primitive.

RemediationAI

The primary fix is to upgrade Wagtail to one of the patched releases: 7.0.8 (for deployments pinned to the 7.0.x LTS line), 7.3.3 (for 7.3.x), or 7.4.2 (for 7.4.x), per the vendor advisory at https://github.com/wagtail/wagtail/security/advisories/GHSA-8634-mr4j-r72c. As a compensating control prior to patching, administrators should audit all user accounts holding the 'Can submit translation' permission and revoke it from any accounts that do not also require broad page access - narrowing the blast radius without disabling the feature entirely. Disabling the translation feature globally (if not in use) eliminates the attack surface entirely with no functional loss. Re-enabling strict permission auditing on the Wagtail admin is advisable as a general hardening measure regardless of patch status.
