DescriptionCVE.org

Wagtail is an open source content management system built on Django. In versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3 and 7.4.2, a low-level user with the "Can submit translation" permission can create translations for any page, including those they do not have permissions for. This issue has been fixed in versions 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2.

AnalysisAI

Authorization bypass in Wagtail CMS allows authenticated low-privilege users to create translations for pages beyond their permitted scope. Versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2 fail to enforce page-level permission checks when a user submits a translation request, exposing content of restricted pages to anyone holding the 'Can submit translation' permission. …

Attack ChainAIDerived

Hypothetical attack flow derived from CVE metadata

Access
Obtain low-privilege Wagtail account with 'Can submit translation' permission
Delivery
Enumerate restricted page IDs or slugs via admin interface
Exploit
Submit translation request targeting unauthorized page
Execution
Retrieve page content via translation workflow UI
Impact
Exfiltrate confidential pre-publication content

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires: (1) a valid authenticated session in the Wagtail admin with the 'Can submit translation' permission explicitly granted; (2) the Wagtail internationalization/translation feature to be enabled in the deployment (not a default minimal install); (3) knowledge or enumeration of the page ID or slug of the target restricted page. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The vendor-assigned CVSS 3.1 score of 4.3 (Medium) reflects a realistic, if modest, risk profile: network-exploitable (AV:N), low complexity (AC:L), requires low privilege (PR:L), and results in only low confidentiality impact (C:L) with no integrity or availability impact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An authenticated Wagtail editor with the 'Can submit translation' permission - but no view rights on a confidential draft page such as an embargoed press release - navigates to the translation submission endpoint and supplies the ID or slug of the restricted page. The server creates a translation record and surfaces the page content to the user through the translation workflow interface, bypassing the page-tree permission gate. …
Remediation The primary fix is to upgrade Wagtail to one of the patched releases: 7.0.8 (for deployments pinned to the 7.0.x LTS line), 7.3.3 (for 7.3.x), or 7.4.2 (for 7.4.x), per the vendor advisory at https://github.com/wagtail/wagtail/security/advisories/GHSA-8634-mr4j-r72c. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
