DescriptionCVE.org

Wagtail is an open source content management system built on Django. In versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3 and 7.4.2, due to a missing permission check on the image preview endpoint, a user with access to the Wagtail admin can preview any image. The existing data of the image object itself is not exposed. The vulnerability is not exploitable by an ordinary site visitor without access to the Wagtail admin. This issue has been fixed in versions 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2.

AnalysisAI

Missing authorization on the image preview endpoint in Wagtail CMS allows any authenticated admin-panel user to render previews of images they do not have permission to access. Affected across three maintained release branches - all Wagtail versions prior to 7.0.8, 7.3.3, and 7.4.2. …

Enumerate valid image IDs via the admin interface or sequential guessing
Execution
Submit requests to image preview endpoint with out-of-scope image IDs
Impact
Render and view restricted image content

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires a valid Wagtail admin account - the vulnerability is explicitly not reachable by ordinary site visitors without admin-panel access. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment The NVD CVSS 3.1 vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N scores 6.5, but C:H likely overstates the impact since only the visual image preview is accessible - not the full image object or associated metadata. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario An authenticated Wagtail admin user with access limited to a specific image collection sends direct HTTP requests to the image preview endpoint using image IDs belonging to restricted collections. By enumerating sequential or guessed image IDs, the attacker renders previews of images they are not authorized to view - for example, confidential product images, internal HR photos, or unpublished media assets stored in restricted collections. …
Remediation Upgrade Wagtail to version 7.0.8, 7.3.3, or 7.4.2 depending on which release branch is in use; these releases introduce the missing permission check on the image preview endpoint and represent the only complete fix. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.
