DescriptionGitHub Advisory

RedisBloom is a probabilistic data structures module for Redis. In all versions of RedisBloom before 2.8.20, the module does not properly validate serialized values processed through the Redis RESTORE command. An authenticated attacker with permission to execute RESTORE on a server with the RedisBloom module loaded can supply a crafted serialized payload that triggers invalid memory access and may lead to remote code execution. A workaround is to restrict access to the RESTORE command with ACL rules. This issue is fixed in version 2.8.20.

AnalysisAI

Heap-based buffer overflow in RedisBloom versions before 2.8.20 enables remote code execution via Redis RESTORE command when authenticated attackers supply malicious serialized payloads. The vulnerability stems from improper validation of deserialized data in the probabilistic data structures module. Exploitation requires Redis authentication and RESTORE command privileges (PR:L), with CVSS 7.7 rating reflecting the authentication requirement despite critical impact potential. No public exploit code or CISA KEV listing identified at time of analysis, though vendor has released security-focused patch 2.8.20.

Technical ContextAI

RedisBloom is a Redis module providing probabilistic data structures including Bloom filters, Cuckoo filters, Count-Min Sketch, and Top-K. The vulnerability (CWE-122: Heap-based Buffer Overflow) exists in the module's deserialization logic for handling Redis native RESTORE commands, which reconstruct Redis keys from serialized binary dumps. When RedisBloom deserializes RESTORE payloads containing its custom data structures, insufficient bounds checking allows crafted serialized values to trigger out-of-bounds memory writes on the heap. This class of vulnerability is particularly critical in Redis modules because they run in the same process space as Redis server, and successful heap corruption can redirect control flow to attacker-controlled code. The CVSS vector AV:N/AC:H indicates network-accessible attack with high complexity, likely due to heap exploitation techniques required beyond simple payload crafting. Starting Redis 8, these probabilistic structures are natively integrated, making standalone RedisBloom obsolete for newer deployments.

RemediationAI

Upgrade RedisBloom module to version 2.8.20 immediately as confirmed by vendor security advisory at https://github.com/RedisBloom/RedisBloom/security/advisories/GHSA-7862-34pw-44wv and release notes at https://github.com/RedisBloom/RedisBloom/releases/tag/v2.8.20. This is a maintenance security patch for the 2.8 branch since RedisBloom standalone development has ceased in favor of native Redis 8 integration. If immediate patching is not feasible, implement ACL-based workaround by restricting RESTORE command access using Redis ACL rules with commands like 'ACL SETUSER application_user -restore' to deny RESTORE privileges to non-administrative accounts, though this may break legitimate application functionality that relies on Redis backup/restore operations or key migration features. Organizations planning future Redis deployments should migrate to Redis 8+ where probabilistic structures are built-in and this module vulnerability class is eliminated. The ACL workaround trades off operational flexibility for security and requires careful audit of application dependencies on RESTORE functionality.
