DescriptionCVE.org

The s2Member - Excellent for All Kinds of Memberships, Content Restriction Paywalls & Member Access Subscriptions plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Remote Code Execution in all versions up to, and including, 260814 via the 'first_name' parameter parameter. This is due to insufficient sanitization of the first_name parameter via esc_refs(), which strips only regex backreferences and not PHP tags, before substitution into the eval'd Signup Tracking Codes template, combined with disclosure of the site-global proxy verification key that allows PayPal postback verification to be bypassed. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to execute code on the server. Successful exploitation requires that the site administrator has configured a Signup Tracking Codes template containing the %%first_name%% placeholder (a documented, GUI-supported feature) and that the attacker has obtained the site-global proxy verification key, which is exposed in plaintext in the JSON response of any PayPal Checkout AJAX request on the target site.

AnalysisAI

Remote code execution in the WordPress s2Member plugin (all versions up to and including 260814) lets unauthenticated attackers execute arbitrary PHP on the server by injecting code through the 'first_name' parameter, which is substituted unsanitized into an eval'd Signup Tracking Codes template. Exploitation is conditional rather than default-config: the site administrator must have configured a Signup Tracking Codes template containing the documented %%first_name%% placeholder, and the attacker must first obtain the site-global proxy verification key that s2Member exposes in plaintext in the JSON response of any PayPal Checkout AJAX request, which also permits bypassing PayPal postback verification. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI

Exploitation Exploitation requires two specific conditions rather than pure default-config remote access: (1) the site administrator must have configured a Signup Tracking Codes template that includes the %%first_name%% placeholder - a documented, GUI-supported s2Member feature but not enabled by default; and (2) the attacker must obtain the site-global proxy verification key, which the plugin discloses in plaintext in the JSON response of any PayPal Checkout AJAX request, allowing PayPal postback verification to be bypassed. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment.
Risk Assessment This is a genuinely high-priority flaw where the technical signals mostly align but contain one important internal conflict. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in.
Exploit Scenario Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in.
Remediation Upstream fix available (commit/changeset referenced in the plugin Trac); a released patched version number is not independently confirmed in the available data, so update s2Member to the latest available release from WordPress.org and verify the installed version is newer than 260814 - the referenced changeset at https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/changeset?old=3671073%40s2member&new=3671073%40s2member and the source files linked from the Wordfence advisory (utilities.inc.php, tracking-codes.inc.php, paypal-utilities.inc.php, paypal-checkout-in.inc.php) indicate where the sanitization and key-disclosure fixes landed. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report.

Recommended ActionAI

Within 24 hours, inventory every WordPress instance running s2Member at version 260814 or earlier and determine which ones have a Signup Tracking Codes template containing the %%first_name%% placeholder; on any such site, immediately remove that placeholder or disable the Signup Tracking Codes feature entirely until a vendor fix ships, and rotate the site-global proxy verification key exposed through the plugin's PayPal Checkout AJAX response. …
