Exploitation Conditions

The attacker must be able to authenticate using the administrator account of the affected products (GENESIS64, ICONICS Suite, Hyper Historian, AnalytiX, MobileHMI, MC Works64). During installation the product installers unnecessarily grant default DCOM launch/activation permissions to that product administrator account; this lets any holder of that administrator account launch and operate - locally or remotely - DCOM objects that should otherwise require UAC elevation. The principal limiting factor is therefore PR:H: exploitation is not possible for unauthenticated users or for users without the product's administrator account, which constrains realistic risk to insiders, credential-theft scenarios, or compromised admin sessions despite the network-reachable AV:N vector. MC Works64 is affected in all versions; the other products are affected at 10.97.3 and prior.

Impact

This is a genuine high-severity privilege-management flaw (CWE-266) but one whose real-world risk is gated by a meaningful precondition rather than by mass exploitability. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (9.4) marks AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/UI:N with full high impact on both the vulnerable system (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) and subsequent systems (SC:H/SI:H/SA:H), which drives the critical score. However, PR:H is the decisive signal: exploitation requires the attacker to already be able to log in using the administrator account of the affected ICONICS/GENESIS64 products, so this is a privilege-boundary/UAC-bypass issue for an already-privileged operator account, not an unauthenticated remote takeover. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - the high CVSS reflects impact and the network-reachability of DCOM rather than demonstrated or likely widespread attack activity. Net: a real priority for OT/ICS asset owners running these HMI/SCADA products (because the impact is total and DCOM can be driven remotely), but the PR:H requirement and the absence of KEV/EPSS/POC signals indicate targeted/insider-adjacent risk rather than opportunistic mass exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who has obtained or already holds the product administrator account credentials for an ICONICS/GENESIS64 deployment logs in and, because the installer over-granted default DCOM launch/activation permissions to that account, invokes DCOM objects locally or over the network that should otherwise require UAC elevation. Using those objects the attacker reads or alters internal process data, destroys configuration, or forces the HMI/SCADA system into a denial-of-service state. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack factors in the vendor's AV:N/AC:L assessment (remotely reachable DCOM, low attack complexity) offset by the required administrator login (PR:H).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026

Improved privilege escalation via insecure default DCOM permissions in Mitsubishi Electric GENESIS64 (10.97.3 and prior), along with ICONICS Suite, Hyper Historian, AnalytiX, MobileHMI (all 10.97.3 and prior) and MC Works64 (all versions), lets a holder of the product's administrator account launch and operate DCOM objects locally or remotely that would normally require UAC elevation, enabling disclosure, tampering, destruction or deletion of internal data and potential denial of service. Exploitation requires authenticated access to that administrator account (CVSS PR:H), so risk is concentrated in insider, credential-theft, or compromised admin-session scenarios rather than unauthenticated mass exploitation; the network-reachable vector and high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (assessed CVSS:3.1 base 9.x, vendor CVSS:4.0 9.4) still make this a serious privilege-management flaw. No public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis and the issue is not listed on CISA KEV.

RemediationAI

No vendor-released patch version is identified in the available data, so the primary action is to open the Mitsubishi Electric PSIRT advisory (https://www.mitsubishielectric.com/psirt/vulnerability/pdf/2026-006_en.pdf) and the JVN coordination page (https://jvn.jp/vu/JVNVU#93251594/) to obtain the vendor's fixed build or formal workaround guidance and apply it as soon as it is published. In the interim, the most targeted compensating control is to remove the unnecessary default DCOM launch and activation permissions that the installer granted to the product administrator account: use dcomcnfg / Component Services to review the AppID and CLSID ACLs associated with the GENESIS64, ICONICS Suite, Hyper Historian, AnalytiX, MobileHMI and MC Works64 COM servers, restrict LaunchPermission and ActivationPermission to the minimum set of service and system accounts, and confirm with the vendor which objects require which rights - the trade-off is that over-tightening these ACLs can break legitimate remote management, historian replication or HMI client connectivity until the correct service identities are re-added. Because the vulnerability requires valid product administrator credentials, reduce credential exposure by enforcing unique non-shared administrator passwords for these products, rotating them if they may have been shared or harvested, restricting interactive and remote logon rights for that account to dedicated management jump hosts, and enabling MFA at the remote-access layer in front of any host exposing DCOM. Network-level containment helps against remote DCOM abuse: block RPC endpoint mapper (TCP 135) and the dynamic RPC port range between SCADA/ICS zones and IT or untrusted networks, understanding that this will also break other DCOM- and WMI-dependent remote administration, and segment control-system hosts from business networks. Finally, add detection for anomalous DCOM activations on these servers - Windows DistributedCOM operational log events 10000/10001 and Sysmon image/process-access events for the product executables spawned by unexpected parent accounts - to catch attempts to abuse the excessive permissions while the vendor fix is pending.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause is CWE-266 (Incorrect Privilege Assignment) in the Windows DCOM/COM permission model. DCOM controls whether a user may launch (LaunchPermission) and activate (ActivationPermission) a COM server, and for out-of-process or elevated COM objects these ACLs are intended to gate access to components that would otherwise require an interactive UAC elevation prompt. During installation, the installers for GENESIS64, ICONICS Suite, Hyper Historian, AnalytiX, MobileHMI and MC Works64 grant default DCOM launch and activation permissions to the product administrator account, effectively pre-authorizing that account to instantiate and drive COM objects that should be elevation-gated. Because the objects can be activated over DCOM/RPC, the flaw is network reachable (AV:N) and crosses a security scope boundary (assessed S:C / CVSS 4.0 SC:H, SI:H, SA:H), turning what should be a local administrative action into a remote one for any principal who already knows the administrator credentials. The vendor CPE data confirms the impacted product families and both the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions CPE name spaces for each title, consistent with the dual-branded GENESIS64/ICONICS code base; MC Works64 is listed as affected in all versions, while the remaining titles are affected at 10.97.3 and prior.

DescriptionCVE.org

Incorrect Privilege Assignment vulnerability in Mitsubishi Electric GENESIS64 versions 10.97.3 and prior, ICONICS Suite versions 10.97.3 and prior, Hyper Historian versions 10.97.3 and prior, AnalytiX versions 10.97.3 and prior, MobileHMI 10.97.3 and prior, MC Works64 all versions, Mitsubishi Electric Iconics Digital Solutions GENESIS64 versions 10.97.3 and prior, ICONICS Suite versions 10.97.3 and prior, Hyper Historian versions 10.97.3 and prior, AnalytiX versions 10.97.3 and prior, and MobileHMI 10.97.3 and prior allows an attacker who can log in using the same administrator account for the affected products to launch and operate DCOM objects locally or remotely. During installation, the installers of the affected products unnecessarily grant default DCOM permissions to the administrator account of the affected products. Users with that administrator accounts can locally or remotely launch and operate DCOM objects that should require UAC elevation. As a result, the attacker may disclose, tamper with, destroy, or delete internal information, or cause the affected system to enter a denial-of-service (DoS) condition.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Mitsubishi Electric GENESIS64 and the related ICONICS Suite, Hyper Historian, AnalytiX, MobileHMI (all 10.97.3 and prior) and MC Works64 (all versions) ship with insecure default DCOM permissions that let anyone holding a product administrator account perform system-level operations without the usual elevation prompt, putting industrial monitoring, historian and operational data at risk of disclosure, tampering, destruction or deletion, with possible denial of service to plant operations. Exploitation is authenticated (CVSS PR:H) and no public exploit identified at time of analysis, so the realistic exposure is insider activity, stolen credentials or a hijacked administrator session rather than opportunistic mass attack - but the systems are network-reachable and carry high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact. Leadership should care because these are operational-technology platforms where a single privileged credential compromise can affect production visibility and control, and no vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so risk must be managed through access control and segmentation in the near term.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: rotate and vault all product administrator credentials and enforce MFA and just-in-time privileged access; remove local and remote DCOM launch/activation permissions for non-essential objects; block RPC/DCOM (TCP 135 and dynamic ports) at network boundaries and restrict these hosts to dedicated OT segments or jump hosts; enforce least privilege with separate administrative and daily-use accounts; enable auditing of DCOM launches and privilege-elevation events with alerting; deploy application allowlisting and EDR coverage on all affected GENESIS64, ICONICS, Hyper Historian, AnalytiX, MobileHMI and MC Works64 hosts.
