MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires that the FreeRDP client has drive redirection enabled (via /drive or drivestoredirect) AND is running the default asynchronous RDPDR dispatch mode - both conditions the advisory names explicitly. The victim must also initiate a connection to the attacker-controlled or compromised RDP server (UI:P / user interaction), since this is a server-to-client attack, not an attack on a listening service. LIMITING FACTORS: the non-default synchronous static-channel setting propagates the handler error and prevents the unbounded asynchronous queue, so it is not exploitable; impact is confined to the affected session (availability only, no data disclosure or modification); and affected builds are FreeRDP ≤ 3.32.1. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk artifact and not an emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L) and the 5.3 score correctly frame it: network-reachable, low complexity, no attacker privileges, but requiring victim interaction (UI:P) and causing only limited availability impact (VA:L) with no confidentiality or integrity loss. Critically, the attack direction is server-to-client: a malicious or compromised RDP server attacks a FreeRDP client that connects to it, so 'AV:N / PR:N' describes the server needing no credentials, not a classic internet-facing listener being hit. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of widespread or active exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a medium-severity availability bug. A public PoC exists but it is an in-process verification harness, not a demonstrated remote exploit (see confidence_notes). Net: patch on a normal cadence; it is not a drop-everything issue, but it is a real, confirmed availability defect for clients that use drive redirection. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A FreeRDP user with drive redirection enabled connects to an attacker-controlled or compromised RDP server. The server sends a drive DEVICE_IOREQUEST with a valid 20-byte header specifying IRP_MJ_CREATE but no CREATE body; this is rejected deep in processing and silently terminates the drive worker thread, after which the server floods further IRPs that accumulate unbounded in the IrpQueue until memory is exhausted and the session's availability is lost. A public verification harness demonstrating the worker death and unbounded queue retention is published in the advisory, but it posts IRPs locally rather than running a malicious server, so it is not a verified working remote exploit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026
Drive redirection in FreeRDP 3.32.1 and earlier can be silently disabled by a malicious RDP server: a single truncated IRP_MJ_CREATE device I/O request terminates the drive worker while leaving its error state at CHANNEL_RC_OK, so the RDPDR channel stays up and every subsequent server request is queued in IrpQueue with no consumer until memory is exhausted or the session ends. Only clients that initiate a connection to an attacker-controlled or compromised RDP server with drive redirection enabled (/drive or drivestoredirect) under the default asynchronous RDPDR dispatch are affected, and the impact is availability loss confined to that session, with no confidentiality or integrity impact (assessed CVSS:3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L; upstream rates it 5.3). There is no CISA KEV listing and no reported in-the-wild exploitation; a public proof-of-concept verification harness accompanies the vendor advisory, and the issue is fixed in 3.32.2.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade FreeRDP to 3.32.2, the first version that addresses the truncated-CREATE handling (advisory: https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-5qqp-5ffm-m3p9). Where upgrading immediately is not possible, the two configuration-level controls the advisory supports are to disable drive redirection entirely by removing /drive and drivestoredirect from client invocations - which eliminates the RDPDR drive worker and the attack surface but also removes file and drive redirection functionality for users - or to run the non-default synchronous static-channel dispatch, under which the handler error propagates instead of feeding the unbounded asynchronous queue, at the cost of deviating from the default channel configuration and losing asynchronous drive I/O behaviour. The upstream code-level remediation described in the advisory is to complete malformed IRPs with an error status while keeping the worker alive, to report a channel failure and reject subsequent IRPs if a worker exits, and to cap the pending request count and retained input bytes; these are implementation changes rather than deployment mitigations and should be tracked through the 3.32.2 release.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in FreeRDP's RDPDR (device redirection) channel handling for drive redirection, where the client parses server-supplied DEVICE_IOREQUEST PDUs into IRP structures. irp_new() accepts a well-formed 20-byte IRP header that declares IRP_MJ_CREATE, but drive_process_irp_create() needs a further 32 bytes of CREATE body; with the body absent it returns ERROR_INVALID_DATA, drive_evaluate() discards the IRP, drive_poll_run() returns FALSE and the drive worker thread exits while reporting CHANNEL_RC_OK - so no channel error is raised and the RDPDR channel remains active. Because drive_irp_request() performs neither worker-liveness nor queue-size checks, later server IRPs continue to be posted onto drive->IrpQueue, each retaining an input stream and an output stream, producing unbounded memory growth classified as CWE-770 (allocation of resources without limits) and CWE-400. The retained-PoC measurement recorded roughly 64.6 MB of heap growth for 100,000 24-byte PDUs and about 223 MB for 1,600-byte PDUs; no live-client OOM kill was measured, so time to exhaustion depends on throughput and available memory. The unbounded asynchronous queue only arises with drive redirection enabled and the default asynchronous dispatch - the non-default synchronous static-channel setting propagates the handler error and prevents the accumulation - and the trigger requires the victim client to connect outward to a hostile or compromised server (UI:R / UI:P), not to attack a listening service, and the trigger is a truncated CREATE with zero-length payload.

FreeRDP before 3.32.2 contains a denial of service vulnerability where a malformed drive DEVICE_IOREQUEST with a truncated IRP_MJ_CREATE body silently kills the drive worker. A malicious RDP server can send such an IRP then post further requests that accumulate unbounded in the IrpQueue, exhausting memory and causing session availability loss.
