MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an actor able to modify the project's AI-DLC artifact files - specifically the artifact title or description fields - or able to supply an untrusted project whose artifacts the victim imports; the attacker injects a '</script>' closing sequence plus script content. Triggering additionally requires that a user generate the HTML (not Markdown) traceability report with an unpatched aidlc-traceability CLI (before commit 96cf0ea) and then open that report in a browser. Limiting factors: exploitation is local (AV:L) and demands active user interaction (opening the report); only the HTML output path is affected, so the Markdown report output is a safe alternative; AI mode and AWS credentials are explicitly NOT required to trigger it; and the injected script's reach is confined to the report context - it can rewrite displayed coverage/gap-analysis results and read the report's contents including the victim's local file paths, but cannot access other local files or credentials. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely low-to-moderate real-world risk despite being a stored XSS. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score is 4.6 (Medium) with AV:L (local), AC:L, AT:N, PR:N, UI:A (the victim must actively open the generated report), and impact confined to the subsequent system (the browser) at SC:L/SI:L with no vulnerable-system impact (VC:N/VI:N/VA:N). No EPSS score is provided in the input, and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV; there is no claim of active exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a patch-on-normal-cadence item rather than an emergency. A detailed, step-by-step proof-of-concept is published inside the AWS GHSA advisory, so exploitation is well understood, but this is a documented reproduction rather than a signal of in-the-wild use - do not conflate the two. One tension worth flagging: the vendor scored PR:N, yet exploitation requires an actor who can modify the project's artifact files (or supply an untrusted project the victim imports); the 'no privileges' rating only holds in the untrusted-project scenario where the attacker authors the malicious artifacts freely. Overall this is a high-CVSS-class bug class (XSS) but a low-real-priority issue: the affected product is an obscure, now-removed CLI, the vector is local, user interaction is mandatory, and injected script cannot reach other local files or AWS credentials. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An actor who can modify a project's AI-DLC artifact files (for example by contributing or supplying an untrusted project) embeds a '</script>' breakout sequence followed by script content in an artifact title or description. When a developer runs an unpatched aidlc-traceability CLI (before commit 96cf0ea) to generate an HTML traceability report and opens it in a browser, the embedded artifact-data JSON terminates the surrounding <script> block early and the injected script executes in the report's context. A step-by-step public PoC description is published in the GHSA advisory; because AV:L and UI:A, the attacker still depends on the victim generating and opening the HTML report locally. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Nov 02, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in the aidlc-traceability CLI (versions from 0.1.0 up to, but not including, commit 96cf0ea) lets an actor who can modify a project's AI-DLC artifact files place a closing script-tag sequence plus script content in an artifact title or description, which then executes in the browser of a user who generates the HTML traceability report and opens it. The injected script can rewrite the displayed coverage and gap-analysis results and read the report's contents, including the victim's local file paths, but cannot reach other local files or credentials. The flaw is fixed at commit 96cf0ea (2026-07-03); a public proof-of-concept reference exists in the GitHub advisory and is not verified as working exploit code, and there is no confirmed active exploitation (no CISA KEV entry).
RemediationAI
Update aidlc-traceability to commit 96cf0ea (2026-07-03, PR #481) or later; the fix escapes the closing-tag sequence when serializing artifact data into the HTML report. The fix is delivered as a commit rather than a tagged release and a released patched version is not independently confirmed, so verify the exact revision in use. Because the CLI was removed from the awslabs/aidlc-workflows repository on 2026-07-16 and is no longer maintained there, the vendor recommends removing any local copy obtained before 2026-07-03 if it cannot be updated, and patching any fork or derivative code to incorporate the new fix. Until then, the advisory's workarounds are to avoid opening HTML reports generated by an unpatched copy from untrusted projects, use the Markdown report output instead of HTML (the Markdown path is not affected), and regenerate reports only from artifact files you control; each of these avoids the vulnerable HTML rendering path rather than fixing it, so the underlying exposure remains for anyone who still generates and opens HTML output. Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is CWE-79 cross-site scripting, specifically the stored/persistent variant, in the HTML report generator of the aidlc-traceability CLI (CPE cpe:2.3:a:aws:aidlc-traceability). The generator serializes artifact data into a JSON blob embedded inside a <script> block in the generated report, and before the fix it did not neutralize the closing-tag sequence: an artifact title or description containing </script> terminates the surrounding script block early, so any markup or script that follows is parsed and executed in the report's origin. The upstream fix at commit 96cf0ea (2026-07-03, PR #481) escapes </ as <\/ during serialization, rendering the injected content inert. Per the accompanying threat model, the tool makes no external network calls and keeps all data local, and the advisory states AI mode and Amazon Bedrock credentials are not required to trigger the issue. The attack surface is the artifact-to-report pipeline: the attacker needs write access to the project's artifact files (or must supply an untrusted project whose artifacts the victim imports), and exploitation is local (AV:L) with required user interaction (UI:R) when the HTML report is opened; the Markdown report path is unaffected. The assessment's scope change (S:C) reflects that script executing in the report context can alter what the report displays, but impact is confined to the report contents, with no access to other local files or credentials.

Local because the report is a local HTML file (AV:L); victim must open it (UI:R); attacker supplies untrusted artifacts so PR:N; script runs in a different context (S:C) with low confidentiality (local paths) and integrity (falsified results) impact, no availability impact.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Stored cross-site scripting (XSS) in the HTML report generator in the aidlc-traceability CLI in AWS AI-DLC Workflows before 2026-07-03 might allow an actor who can modify a project's AI-DLC artifact files to execute arbitrary script in the browser of a user who opens a generated HTML traceability report via crafted artifact titles or descriptions.
To remediate this issue, users should remove any local copy of the aidlc-traceability CLI obtained before 2026-07-03, or update it to commit 96cf0ea or later. The CLI was removed from the repository on 2026-07-16.
