Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires three concrete, confirmed conditions to all hold: (1) the Parse Server option protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt must be set to false (non-default for this behavior); (2) a beforeSave trigger must write a value beneath a protected field using a dot notation key (writing the complete protected-field value instead avoids the bug - this is the documented workaround); and (3) the attacker must be a client already holding create or update permission on the object (PR:L). Parse Server 8 is not affected because it lacks this option. Exposure is strictly limited to values the trigger writes in the same request. These factors - required privileges, a non-default option setting, and a specific trigger-implementation pattern - sharply limit realistic exploitation despite the network attack vector.

Impact

This is a genuinely low-priority issue, and the signals agree rather than conflict. The supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:N) scores 2.3, driven down by low confidentiality-only impact (VC:L, with VI/VA/SC/SI/SA all N), a required attack precondition (AT:P), and required privileges (PR:L - the client must already hold create or update permission). The vuln.today decision label is 'monitor', the lowest urgency tier, and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV. No EPSS score was provided in the input, and no PoC or exploit reference appears among the sources - only the GitHub security advisory (GHSA-6mfr-rv66-x7m3) and a VulnCheck advisory, which are disclosure advisories, not exploit code. The real-world risk is further gated by configuration: exploitation requires the non-default combination of protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt=false AND a beforeSave trigger that writes beneath a protected field using dot notation, so most deployments are not affected at all. All signals point the same way - this is a low-severity, narrowly-scoped information disclosure, not a high-CVSS-but-overrated issue nor an underrated one; the inputs are internally consistent.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

In an affected deployment, an authenticated client holding create or update permission on a class submits a save request for an object; a beforeSave trigger writes a value beneath a protected field using a dot notation key, and the save response returns that trigger-written value to the client even though the field is protected for them. No public exploit code is referenced, and the exposure is limited to values the trigger writes in that same request. The required non-default configuration (protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt=false plus a dot-notation-writing trigger) makes opportunistic exploitation unlikely.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 30, 2026

Parse Server 9.7.0 through 9.10.5-alpha.6 can return protected field values to an authenticated client holding create or update permission on an object, when the deployment sets the protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt option to false and a beforeSave trigger writes beneath a protected field using a dot notation key. The leak is confined to values that the trigger writes in the same create or update request; the save-response field stripping simply failed to remove those nested keys. Exploitation requires the non-default option, a specific trigger-implementation pattern and existing write permission on the object, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis; a fix is available in 9.10.5-alpha.7 and Parse Server 8 is not affected because it lacks the option.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Parse Server 9.10.5-alpha.7 or later, which omits every key at or beneath a protected field from save responses (upstream fix is PR https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/pull/10786, referenced from the advisory https://github.com/parse-community/parse-server/security/advisories/GHSA-6mfr-rv66-x7m3). If upgrading cannot be done immediately, the vendor documents two concrete compensations: first, leave protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt at its default rather than setting it to false, which restores top-level protected-field stripping but changes response behaviour for clients that relied on the exemption setting; second, rewrite affected beforeSave triggers so they set the complete value of the protected field instead of writing beneath it with a dot notation key, since a protected field assigned as a whole is removed from save responses - this requires auditing and testing each trigger for behavioural equivalence. Deployments on Parse Server 8 need no action for this issue, as the option does not exist there.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Parse Server is an open-source Node.js backend (npm package parse-server) that implements the Parse Platform API, including class-level and field-level permissions. This is an information-disclosure flaw (CWE-200) in the save-response filtering path. When protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt is set to false, the server strips protected fields from the responses of create and update requests; however, the filtering only handled the protected field at its top level and did not remove sibling keys addressed beneath it, so a beforeSave Cloud Code trigger that assigns a value with a dot notation key (for example writing a nested property under a protected field) produced a response containing that value even though the field is protected for the calling client. Fix PR 10786 changes the filtering so every key at or beneath a protected field is omitted from save responses. The assessed vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, i.e. a remote, authenticated low-privileged client with high attack complexity, limited confidentiality impact and no integrity or availability impact; the trigger conditions are not described beyond the beforeSave dot notation write pattern. Parse Server 8 does not offer this option and is therefore not affected.

DescriptionCVE.org

Parse Server from 9.7.0 before 9.10.5-alpha.7 contains an information disclosure vulnerability that allows clients to receive protected field values written by beforeSave triggers using dot notation keys. When protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt is set to false, clients with create or update permission can read values a trigger writes beneath a protected field in the same request.
