| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that MISP Guard be configured with a required-taxonomy rule and an allowed-tags list (for example TLP with tlp:clear allowed), and that the attacker can author or modify events or attributes in a feed source the guard proxies - including attributes nested within objects and shadow attributes, all of which the pre-1.4 check missed. The specific trigger is an event or attribute that simultaneously carries an allowed taxonomy tag and a non-allowed tag of the same required taxonomy; the pre-patch guard verified only that one matching allowed tag existed and never checked that every tag of that taxonomy was allowed. Limiting factors: the attacker needs privileged write access to feed content (PR:H), the guard must be deployed with required-taxonomy enforcement enabled, and the affected version must be below 1.4; there is no impact on the guard host's own confidentiality, integrity, or availability. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity data-handling bypass, not a high-urgency emergency. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score is 6.1 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:N and the only impact set to SI:H (subsequent-system integrity), reflecting that the flaw breaks the integrity of the feed's data-classification policy rather than compromising the guard host itself. The decisive limiting signal is PR:H: exploitation requires an actor who can already author or modify MISP events in a feed source the guard proxies, so this is an abuse-of-trusted-contributor issue, not a remote-unauthenticated break. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or SSVC automatable/technical-impact values are present in the input, so widespread opportunistic exploitation cannot be inferred - the only provided priority signal is vuln.today's 'this_month' label, consistent with a real but non-emergency fix. The references contain a patch commit only; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. One cross-source note: the vendor models the impact as subsequent-system integrity (SI:H), but the practical effect described - higher-classification data (e.g., TLP:red/amber) reaching consumers cleared only for lower-classification data - is fundamentally a confidentiality/disclosure outcome for downstream feed consumers, which is why the tags label it 'Information Disclosure'; defenders should treat it as a classification-leak risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An organization runs MISP Guard with a required-taxonomy rule (e.g., TLP) that only permits tlp:clear to flow to a given feed consumer. A contributor with write access to the feed source authors an event carrying both tlp:clear (allowed) and tlp:red (not allowed); because the guard only confirmed that at least one taxonomy tag matched the allow-list, the event passes and the sensitive data is distributed to consumers who should never receive it. No public exploit code is identified; the fix is in the referenced vendor patch commit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
MISP Guard releases before 1.4 enforce required-taxonomy rules incompletely, so a feed proxy configured to distribute only lower-classification data can be made to pass events and attributes marked with a higher classification. An authenticated user able to author or modify events in a proxied feed source can attach an allowed tag (for example tlp:clear) together with a non-allowed tag of the same taxonomy (tlp:red or tlp:amber) to an event, an attribute, an attribute nested in an object, or a shadow attribute, and the guard's policy check still permits distribution - disclosing more sensitive data to feed consumers than policy intends. No public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; this is a moderate-severity data-handling bypass rather than a high-urgency emergency, and the upstream fix is commit 6127d94c350e4dfe31fd4426ba26f51294ed3867 with the affected range listed as misp-guard 0 to <1.4.
RemediationAI
Update MISP Guard to 1.4 or later, which is the first release outside the affected range "misp-guard 0 <1.4"; if a packaged release is not yet available in your distribution channel, apply the upstream fix commit 6127d94c350e4dfe31fd4426ba26f51294ed3867, which adds check_required_taxonomy_tags_allowed (rejecting any tag of a required taxonomy that is not in the allowed list) and the inherit_event_taxonomies handling for attributes, object-nested attributes and shadow attributes, with regression tests in src/test/test_misp_guard.py. The available sources describe no alternative workaround, and the code change is the only complete fix; the exposure only exists where a required-taxonomy rule is configured with a restricted allowed-tags list, so operators who cannot update immediately should be aware that pre-1.4 builds cannot reliably enforce that restriction. After updating, review feed content that was proxied by older versions for events carrying mixed-classification taxonomy tags, since such data may already have been distributed to consumers.

Technical ContextAI · show details
MISP Guard is a Python proxy (src/mispguard.py) that sits in front of MISP feed endpoints and applies policy rules to the JSON payloads flowing through it, including taxonomy rules that require the presence of a tag from a named taxonomy (TLP being the canonical example) and restrict which tags of that taxonomy may appear. The flaw is classed as CWE-20 (improper input validation): the pre-patch check_event_required_taxonomies / check_required_taxonomy_exists logic only established that at least one tag of the required taxonomy matched an entry in the configured allowed_tags list, and never iterated over all tags of that taxonomy to confirm each one was allowed. Because MISP events routinely carry several tags from a single taxonomy, an event or attribute could hold both tlp:clear and tlp:red and still satisfy the 'exists' test. The same gap existed at attribute level and, through check_object_level_rules and the ShadowAttribute recursion in check_attribute_level_rules, for attributes nested inside objects and for shadow attributes. The upstream fix introduces check_required_taxonomy_tags_allowed, which raises a ForbiddenException on any tag whose name begins with '<taxonomy>:' and is not in the allowed list, and adds an inherit_event_taxonomies flag so that an attribute without its own required-taxonomy tag inherits the already-validated taxonomy of its parent event instead of being rejected or skipped. The assessed impact is on the confidentiality of the shared feed data (scope-changed C:H/I:N), not on the guard host's own confidentiality, integrity or availability.

Requires privileged feed-authoring access (PR:H) over network-distributed feeds (AV:N/AC:L); the guard protects downstream consumers so scope changes (S:C) and the real impact is disclosure of higher-classification data (C:H).

DescriptionCVE.org
MISP Guard, a proxy that enforces security policies on MISP feed data, contained an incomplete validation check for required taxonomy tags. When a feed event or its attributes carried tags belonging to a required taxonomy (for example, TLP), the guard only verified that at least one tag of that taxonomy matched the configured allowed list. It did not verify that every tag of the required taxonomy present on the event or attribute was in the allowed list. As a result, an event or attribute could simultaneously carry an allowed tag (e.g., tlp:clear) and a non-allowed tag (e.g., tlp:red or tlp:amber) and still pass the guard's policy check. This allowed data marked with a higher classification or sensitivity level to be distributed through feeds configured to only distribute lower-classification data, effectively bypassing the intended data-handling restrictions. The vulnerability affected both event-level and attribute-level tag validation, including attributes nested within objects and shadow attributes. An attacker with the ability to author or modify MISP events in a feed source could include non-allowed taxonomy tags alongside allowed ones to exfiltrate more sensitive data to feed consumers than the guard policy intended to permit.
