MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Initial Access, Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an account holding the smw-schemaedit right, which the vendor states is granted by default only to the curator and administrator groups; the attacker must save a property group schema whose canonical_name holds a markup payload (validation pattern '^(.*)$' imposes no restriction) and whose property_keys names a property present on a browsable page. The targeted property must have no explicit 'Is property group' annotation so that the schema list path resolves the crafted group. Execution additionally requires a victim to view the Special:Browse page of a page carrying that member property (reflected in UI:P) - the script runs only in that viewer's browser, so impact scales with the privilege of whoever browses (an administrator viewing the page is the high-impact case). Limiting factors: the required elevated, restricted smw-schemaedit right (not available to ordinary users) and the mandatory victim interaction of opening the affected Special:Browse page. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:H/UI:P, base 4.8 Medium) and the detailed GHSA evidence agree on the mechanism: PR:H reflects that exploitation requires the smw-schemaedit right, which the advisory states is granted by default only to the curator and administrator groups, and UI:P reflects that a victim must actually view the affected Special:Browse page. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_month', consistent with a stored XSS gated behind an elevated right rather than an unauthenticated internet-facing flaw. It is NOT in CISA KEV (no confirmed active exploitation), and no EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified here - do not read the absence of EPSS/KEV as either safety or active exploitation. A documented proof-of-concept (payload, schema JSON, and a confirmed reproduction) exists inside the GHSA advisory. The notable threat model is privilege crossing: a lower-trust curator who holds smw-schemaedit but cannot normally run script in another user's session can plant a payload that fires in an administrator's authenticated session, making full admin takeover a plausible downstream consequence if an admin views the page. One data conflict must be flagged: the embedded GHSA 'Affected Versions' section states 'Fix status: not fixed / No fixed release exists at the time of review' and gives a lower bound of 3.0.0, whereas the CVE/EUVD metadata and the final package line confirm the flaw is fixed in 7.3.1 with an affected range of 3.2.0 to <7.3.1 - the advisory body reflects an earlier review snapshot now superseded by the vendor fix. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user holding the smw-schemaedit right (by default a curator or administrator) saves a property group schema whose canonical_name field contains markup such as '<img src=x onerror=alert(document.domain)>', naming a property that appears on a browsable page with no explicit group annotation. When any other user - critically, an administrator - opens that page's Special:Browse view, GroupFormatter emits the canonical_name verbatim as the section heading and the JavaScript executes in that viewer's authenticated session. A working proof-of-concept with the exact payload and a confirmed reproduction is published in the GHSA advisory. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in Semantic MediaWiki 3.2.0 through 7.3.0 lets a user holding the elevated smw-schemaedit right save a property group schema whose canonical_name contains script markup, which the Special:Browse group formatter emits unescaped as a section heading and executes in the browser of anyone who later browses a page carrying a member property of that group, including administrators. Exploitation is authenticated and requires the victim to open the affected Special:Browse page, so impact scales with the privilege of the viewer rather than being reachable by anonymous visitors. A detailed public proof-of-concept reproduction is published in the GitHub advisory; no confirmed active exploitation or KEV listing exists, and this is assessed as a genuine but moderate-priority issue. The vendor has released SemanticMediaWiki 7.3.1 with the fix.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.3.1 (Composer: mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki 7.3.1) or later, which escapes the schema-derived group label before it enters the Special:Browse heading, covering both the anchor body and the span wrapper as described in the advisory at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-fp94-c5vh-cmhp. Updating is the only complete fix: the upstream guidance is to emit canonical_name through an escaping element constructor (or apply htmlspecialchars-equivalent encoding) at the point the group name is assembled. As an interim mitigation, restrict the smw-schemaedit right so it is held only by fully trusted users - the trade-off is that curators lose the ability to create and edit property group schemas until the upgrade is applied. As defense in depth the advisory also suggests constraining the canonical_name schema pattern (data/schema/property-group-schema.v1.json) to disallow angle brackets and control characters, and deploying a Content Security Policy that blocks inline event-handler execution; both are secondary measures whose trade-offs are reduced schema flexibility and possible breakage of other inline scripts on the wiki. Because exploit code is not confirmed in the wild, treat this as a this-month patching item rather than an emergency, but prioritize sites where administrators routinely browse factbox pages whose groups are defined by less-trusted schema editors.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a MediaWiki extension that stores structured semantic annotations (properties and values) in wiki pages and renders them through a factbox and the Special:Browse page. The flaw is CWE-79 in the server-side Browse group formatter (SMW\MediaWiki\Specials\Browse\GroupFormatter): the property group schema JSON (data/schema/property-group-schema.v1.json) validates canonical_name only against the pattern ^(.*)$, which imposes no character restriction, so the value is stored verbatim. On output, the formatter checks whether an internationalization message exists for the group name; for arbitrary attacker text no such message exists, so the raw string is retained (GroupFormatter.php lines 191-197), then inserted as the body of an anchor built with the raw-body element constructor (Html::rawElement, lines 207-214) and wrapped in a span (getGroupLink, lines 124-130). That assembled string is assigned to the html-heading field (HtmlBuilder.php:526) and rendered through an unescaped Mustache triple-brace field ({{{.}}} in templates/FactboxSection.mustache:15), followed by addHTML in SpecialBrowse.php without a parser or sanitizer stage. The security invariant requiring a schema-controlled label to be HTML-safe before entering the heading is never enforced. The sibling group-resolution path that derives a group from a database key cannot carry a '<' character, which isolates the schema path as the unique injection route; the i18n label override and the schema validation pattern were both tested and neither blocks a single-line markup payload. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:semanticmediawiki:semanticmediawiki:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers the affected component.

1DescriptionCVE.org
SemanticMediaWiki from 3.2.0 before 7.3.1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with the smw-schemaedit right to inject markup through an unescaped property group schema canonical_name. Attackers can save a schema whose canonical_name holds script markup, which GroupFormatter renders unescaped in Special:Browse headings, executing JavaScript in viewers' sessions including administrators.
